I wouldn’t change anything in the itinerary, although one might skip the north, spend some more time in the southern

sites and include Kalakpa in a fourteen-day trip. Due to the visit during European summer we didn’t see any wintering

European species but all weavers and bishops were in breeding plumage.

Practicalities

Guiding

We were expertly guided by William Apraku and Foster Frimpong (Ashanti Tours).

Literature

We took the birds of Western Africa and the Birds of Ghana, both excellent fieldguides. For sounds we downloaded a

selection from www.xeno-canto.org. We read some trip reports in preparation for the trip from

www.cloudbirders.com.

Travelling

Minivan with driver arranged by Ashanti.

Eating & Sleeping

Everything booked by Ashanti, we asked for cheaper accommodation to cut costs. Most days we ate simple fried rice

mixed with chicken & vegatables. We also tried the local food a few times but in contrast to our guides most of us

were not very charmed by the Fufu and Banku dishes.

Weather

We visited outside the regular seasons for visiting birders (November to April) but we got lucky (?) with the weather

and experienced hardly any rain. It was quite cloudy most days and the temperatures ranged around 25 degrees

Celsius. Due to the rain season and the abundance of water it was hard to find water-bound birds and therefore we

were unable to find e.g. African Finfoot en Hartlaub’s Ducks.

Health and safety

We used Malarone for the duration of the trip but hardly saw any insects.

Money

We brought enough euros from home which we changed at the Accra airport. Although we didn’t use them, we saw

ATM’s everywhere.

Costs We flew with British Airways from Amsterdam to Accra (via London) for 650 euro. We paid 2200 dollar per person for the Ashanti tour, excluding meals and entrance fees to cut costs. For most birding sites we paid an entrance fees (prices all in cedis, where 1 euro was equal to about 5 cedis at the time of our visit). Some entrance fees we paid: 90pp Shai Hills, 700 total for birding (including extra guide) at Mole, 30 pp Tongo hills, 15 pp at Egyptian plover site, Rockfowl site 30 pp.

Visited Sites

Shai hills

Logistics

This site is close to Accra and therefore often visited as a first stop on the trip. We slept at a simple hotel along the

main coastal road from where it was a 30 min drive to the entrance of the park. At the gate a local ranger joined us for

the visit and we paid the entrance fee once we left at the end of the morning.

Birding

Shai Hills offers a good introduction site to get familiar (again) with the African birds. Since it is open land savanna,

birding is relatively easy and a good way to start the trip. The species overlap with those of Mole NP and other

Savanna woodland sites in the north so most of birds we saw again later. Nevertheless we had a nice morning and

birding here from sunrise to 10.30 gave us plenty new species to start the trip. Main target here is the White-crowned

Cliff-chat which we found at two locations but only had good views at the second big rocks that we checked for it.

Kakum NP

Logistics

After a drive of about 5-6 hours from Shai Hills (with a lot of traffic along the coast and a short stop at the Sakumono

lagoon) we reached the beginning of Kakum NP. We slept in the Rain Forest Lodge at the beginning of the dirt road

that leads to the entrance of the park. From there it is a 25 min drive to Kakum square where the Canopy walkway

starts. The walkway officially opens at 8.30 but for birders they can arrange a special entrance at dawn (which is great

to have the place to yourself during the best hours, birding on a small wooden canopy walkway proved difficult with

tourists around).

Birding

There are 3 main birding areas in and around Kakum NP:

Canopy walkway: We started here the first morning, spending most time on the furthest platform of the

canopy walk where you have a great overview of the surrounding forest. The morning was very productive with the

highlight being a pair of Red-fronted Antpeckers in a flock below us. We left the walkway at 10.30 as tourists started

coming and because after a few hours you have to pay an extra fee. We birded some more on the trails below the

canopy (African Piculet). After lunch we returned and first birded some more of the trails (Rufous-sided Broadbill, HO

White-spotted Flufftail), the last hours until dusk were spent up on the canopy walk where a Brown Nightjar started to

call. We searched for owls some more around the HQ but without luck.

Antikwaa: This nearby farmbush offers a different set of species. Our first stop was at a bush that held a

Lowland Sooty Boubou, a HO Red-cheeked Wattle-eye, Puvel's Illadopsis and several White-spotted Flufftails. We next

walked through some marshy areas and more farmland, all very busy with bird activity.

Abrafo forest: Birded here the afternoon of the second day and the morning of the third. Abrafo offers a mix

of forest and farm bush. First surprise here was a Rosy Bee-eater (they should not be here in August). Both times we

visited we found a nice ant flock (White-tailed Alethe).

After birding at Antikwaa the second day we drove onto the Pra river for the well-known stop for Rock Pratincole and

White-bibbed Swallow. On the way back the place for Preuss’s Swallow turned out to be empty (but we ended up

seeing them later en route to Nsuta).

Nsuta Forest

Logistics

Since birding at Kakum was very successful William suggested include an extra visit at Nsuta in the afternoon/early

night for owling. The accommodation is however all the way at the coast so we drove back and forth for the night.

Birding

When we arrived in the afternoon we walked a side trail of the road where a Congo Serpent Eagle flew over and a

Red-chested Owlet responded very well. At the last light of dusk 2 Spot-Breasted Ibises flew over while we were

waiting at the road for it to become dark and look for owls. We heared Akun Eagle Owl but it wouldn’t show.

Surprisingly, while driving back to the hotel William suddenly found a perched Akun Eagle Owl using a spotlight from

the driving car. The next morning we returned and had some good birding along the road and some side trails; best

birds include Chocolate –backed Kingfisher, White-crested Hornbill, Red-billed Dwarf Hornbills and Fernando Po Batis.

Ankasa Forest

Logistics

Forest camp by Ashanti with some simple buildings where they cook and we slept in tents. Perfect location to be in

the forest when you wake up. Close by at the other side of the entrance gate they are now building a new lodge with

several cabins (plan to be finished sometime in 2018?)

On our way to the forest we stopped at the Ebi river for 2 new sunbirds (Reichenbach's and Mangrove). We tried for

White-browed Forest Flycatcher but only heard them on our way back. On our way back we birded at the coastal

plains for the last hour of the day.

Birding

Main areas we birded at Ankasa:

Forest ponds: After arriving at Ankasa camp we went out for the last 2 hours of the day to the powerline

clearing and the forest ponds. The highlight was a Spot-breasted Ibis coming down to the pond and staying in full open

view for more than 20 min (which allowed for very good pictures), a first even for William. During the next days we

regularly checked the ponds but no further luck (given that the forest was very wet, chances of finding Finfoot or

Hartlaub’s Duck at this time of the year are almost zero).

Powerline clearing: Good place to scan the canopy and overflying birds. We stopped here on several

occasions and saw Yellow-casked Hornbill and Square-tailed Saw-wing.

Forest around entrance: A trail loops back from the entrance to the forest road. We walked this one morning

but had little activity (2 new Illadopsises being the highlight).

Nightbirding: Biggest target here is the Nkulengu-rail. We heard it several times during our stay. The tactic is

to wait on the trail while the two guides go into the forest to locate the bird with a torch. On 2 occasions we seemed

quite close, but the birds unfortunately stopped calling before the guides found them.

Nyiambe Forest

Logistics

We first went to the southern part of the forest were there are some trails going in. A bit more north is the entrance

to the Picathartes site. The place is protected by 2 local villages where we parked the car and got 2 locals to escort us

to the nesting rock (Ashanti is helping the village by also building a school).

Birding

Birding the trails in the morning is very productive with many species all around (most of them we had already seen

but we did add 2 new pigeons to the list). The visit to the Picathartes site was easier than I expected (only a 20 min

walk to the rock). There we sat at a small bench and waited. It didn’t take long for the first bird to make a short

appearance, what a stunning and bizarre-looking dinosaur! We then waited for almost 3 more hours but at 16:45 3

more birds came the rock and showed very well, also in the bushes behind us.

Offinso ‘Forest’ A nice birding stop to break the long drive to Mole NP. Nice birding for a couple of hours where we added a few

species to the list (e.g. Compact Weaver).

Mole NP

Logistics

We stayed at Mole Hotel, a great place on top of a hill from which you can look out to the savanna below, including a

drinking pool for Elephants.

Birding

The savanna was very wet due to all the rain that had fallen in the last weeks (at some places we had to wade trough

20cm deep water) Birding was great though with pleasant temperatures all day (another advantage of visiting in

August). For 2.5 days we went out in the morning and afternoon with the car (mostly short stops along the many road

that go trough the park). Among the targets we were able to see were White-throated Francolin, Forbe’s Plover, Sun

Lark and Oriole Warbler.

Also during the lunch breaks the fruiting tree next to the swimming pool and the lookout point provided good ways to

spend the time. We did less well on the nightbirds… we found several Long-tailed Nightjars on the first night drive and

Greyish Eagle Owl in the garden, but did poorly on the rest (note that Standard-winged Nightjar is not in breeding

plumgage this time of the year).

Around Bolgatanga

Logistics

Long drive to the North where we stayed in the town of Bolgatanga. During a 2-night stay we visited the birding places

around.

Birding

3 main birding areas around Bolgatanga:

Tongo Hills: Out of the savanna plains the Tongo Hills can be seen from a distance. They are home to a few

special birds that favour this rocky habitat: Fox Kestrel and Rock-loving Cisticola. Both birds we found within the first

30 minutes after arriving in the afternoon.

White Volta: This is the best place for Egyptian Plover, we saw about 10 of them along the river along with

White-crowned Lapwing. Downside is that the drive takes about 3 hours on a terrible dirt road (but the road is under

construction, with travelling time (and comfort) probably improved when finished). On one of the stops near the

plovers we found a pair of Green-winged Pytilias, which was a new species for William and probably the first

documented record within Ghana. Other species here include Golden-Breasted Bunting. At the river Egyptian Plover

was wonderfully common and we found White-crowned Lapwing as well.

Tono Dam: We visited here on the second afternoon, but with a huge thunderstorm arriving the activity was

very poor. Yellow Penduline Tit is a good target here but we missed it unfortunately. We did find a Standard-winged

Nightjar without standards.

Bobiri Forest

Logistics

We slept in the Bobiri Lodge, which gives a nice and quiet entrance to the forest (with dinner and breakfast outside on

the porch).

Birding

We tried both at night and in the morning again for the Nkulengu Rail, but again only heard it. The full morning birding

brought us several big flocks including the smallest bird of Africa, the Tit Hylia.

Atewa Ridge

Logistics

We slept close by in a hotel and had lunch around the corner of the start of the ridge.

Birding

First afternoon we birded the farmland at the foot of the Atewa Ridge. We finally found Marsh Tchagra here and

overall nice bird activity. Unexpected bonus was a Fraser’s Eagle Owl just after dusk on our final evening of owling.

Next morning we hiked up the Atewa Ridge, a very nice walk up where the main target, the Blue Moustached Bee-

eater, showed after a few hours. Another bonus was a big ant swarm attended by both Alethes. As expected, we failed

to find the extremely rare Nimba Flycatcher.

We have tried to accurately indicate the proper subspecies for all our observations, usually based on geographic

locations based on the IOC World Bird List version 7.3. We tried to keep detailed notes throughout the trip but
