IMPORTANT: We would advise everyone to check with

advertisers directly as to whether or not they are open for business!

Chairman's Report

First and foremost, recognition of the time and effort that the previous Chairman

gave to the Parish. A big thank you to Thomas Bowler for all the hours put in on

Parish Council business. I do hope Thomas is available for providing ad-hoc

advice to the new Chairman.

Another deserving of mention is the Vice Chairman, Rod Jeakings. I had to miss

the July meeting of the Parish Council, which would have been my first as

Chairman. I had to send in my apologies very late in the day, so I would like to

thank Rod for taking over at such short notice.

I would ask that every reader ensures that they carefully read the page entitled

URGENT ACTION REQUIRED. This concerns the Northampton Borough

Council Local Plan 2. NBC has now commenced a further period of consultation

over this plan, and is open for submissions until the 7th September 2020.

One of the items which regularly appears on the Agenda for the Parish Council

meetings is the parking of vehicles over the pavement. Hopefully when this issue

of the Parish News is delivered, there will be an insert on this very topic, which I

very much hope you will not just read, but take on board the overriding message.

Finally, a reminder that the Parish Council still has the one vacancy; we would love

to receive applications from anybody that feels they would like to make a

contribution to the welfare of our wonderful village.

Many thanks,

Bill Garner

Chairman Great Houghton Parish Council

Thank you to Helen Mcall for the cover photograph.

To all the villagers who cannot get down to see us.

We are still offering a takeaway service from ourmain menu with free delivery

You can locate our menu on our website

Give us a call & speak to Traci

W.I. News July 2020

We are still unable to hold meetings, coffee and craft mornings due to the Corona

virus pandemic although restrictions have been relaxed somewhat lately.

This enabled us at the end of June to hold our first committee meeting in person

since March, so much better than via Zoom or email. Six committee members took

chairs to the playing field and socially distanced by the village hall. It was lovely to

be together again to discuss the WI future. We have been unable to hold meetings

in April, May, June and July but are hopeful of being able to meet up again in

August if safe and permissible to do so. A lot of catching up to be done, I am sure.

Relevant speakers have been contacted and rebooked for 2021 so we will not miss

out on their talks.

We have kept in touch with members by telephone, making sure they are staying

safe, not feeling isolated and this gesture has been much appreciated by all.

I know WI members have been vigilant, supported each other and offered a hand

of friendship and help to villagers who have needed it at this difficult time.

I hope you all stay safe and well and we will be able to meet soon.

Coronavirus Further Update – Special Measures

We are sure that the news of a positive development in treatment for the virus, along with reducing numbers infected and a partial return to normality with some relaxation of special measures, will be well received by everyone. Although some businesses and facilities beginning to reopen, there is however a long way to go and we all need to remain vigilant in ensuring that we protect ourselves and others by maintaining social distancing and other safety standards.

For all residents who may still be self-isolating and/or in need of help or advice please feel free to continue to contact the Parish Clerk or any Parish Councillor or Neighbourhood Watch representatives. Contact details can be found in the Parish News. The Parish Council remain most grateful to our list of additional volunteers for their continued offer of support.

We are pleased to advise that the Village Hopper is now once again operating its full service and passengers are reminded of the need to ensure face masks are worn when travelling on the bus. Please check the timetable on our website (village info tab)

With libraries and bookshops reopening, the council at their July meeting did consider re-opening the book-swap however due to difficulties relating to effectively controlling the return of books, they decided that it should for now remain closed. This will be further considered at future meetings.

Although the tennis court is now being used and cricket is about to resume in accordance with Government relaxations, GHPFA who manage these facilities by volunteers have chosen, in view of some guidelines that make it difficult to manage, to keep these areas closed subject to ongoing review.

Curate's Corner July 2020

God will strengthen you with his own great power so that you will not give up when

troubles come, but you will be patient. Colossians 3:12

If I were asked to list my virtues, patience would not figure highly; sad to say in

times of stress, exhaustion or worry, patience is the last thing on my mind. At the

time of writing, we have lived three months of lockdown and isolation and I am

itching to get going again, but get going to what? Life as it was, has changed and

new ways of living will have to be found. Going into lockdown was easy, government

advice was given and swiftly adhered to and for many people, lockdown happened

overnight. Coming out of it however is a completely different prospect with argument

and counter-argument taking place with advice changing daily, so much so, that it is

very hard to see a true way forward. This is precisely the time when instructions

from the top need to be clear and when patience will be of utmost importance. We

all have our own opinion on many issues, which we have a right to express,

unfortunately there will always be those who think their opinion is right, and criticise

others who think differently. Long gone from our vocabulary is the phrase “agree to

disagree”, instead some people act as judge, jury and executioner. Most of the

country has abided by official guidance during lockdown and is continuing to do so

as steps are taken to come out, but there are people who think the rules do not apply

to them. I include those who have high-jacked peaceful anti-racist demonstrations in

support of the memory of George Floyd, whose life was taken so wilfully in full view

of the world's media. The actions of some demonstrators have been a huge

disappointment for those of us who have obeyed rules to control the Coronavirus at

a time when the government and the people need support and encouragement. So

in these troubled times which have affected the lives of people from all nations, I pray

for patience as we await instruction. I also pray for your safety and protection as we

take the right steps at the right time towards life after lockdown, which we know will

be changed. Hopefully lessons have been learnt by us all which give a new

appreciation of life, no matter what colour our skin is, and what is really important.

Perhaps then we can live and worship in fellowship and community with each other,

and with God just as he intended.

God bless you,

Irene

Poppy Appeal 2020

I have been advised by the Royal British Legion that due to the Coronavirus

pandemic, they cannot sanction door to door collections this Remembrance

tide.

Neither will collection boxes be permitted in the White Hart or Old Cherry

Tree public houses this year.

To make sure the Royal British Legion are able to continue with their work,

they will be making arrangements for collection boxes to be available in

selected high profile locations this year.

Many thanks to our local collectors and helpers and I am sure that we all

hope the world returns to some normality in 2021.

Open GardensI was very disappointed that we couldn't go ahead with our Village Open Garden Event this year due to Coronavirus. Although six of us who where taking part in opening up our gardens did our own mini one under strictly controlled measures.

We went round the six and admired all the effort and hard work that had been put in to make them look so good. They where all very different and wonderful in their design and content. It was a great shame that more villagers couldn`t see them in all their glory.

Thank you to all the gardeners that opened them up to their fellow gardeners. But all is not lost as they have all said that they are happy to open them up again next year (subject to coronavirus) so you will not be disappointed fingers crossed.I managed to sell some plants that I had grown for the open garden event outside my house at 2 Wymersley Close. Thanks to the villagers who bought them I raised £42.00. The money has been divided equally between St Mary`s Church and The Playing Field Association with both receiving £21.00.
