Letters to Santa from area youngsters Christmas is the time of grand cel-ebration everywhere.

Since ancient times, wreaths have been made in different ways with vari-ous materials, evergreens, herbs, dried flowers, fruits, berries, and so on.

Not only they add charm to the fes-tival fervor but bear a spiritual signifi-cance in the Christian tradition.

People used to decorate their hous-es with Christmas wreaths for different reasons.

For some they symbolized the strength of life or a sign of victory, and yet others have deeper meanings.

The tradition of using wreaths as Christmas decorations dates to 16th century Germany, where Lutherans created the Advent wreath.

As with most Christmas decorations, the wreath was a symbol of Jesus’ birth and God’s grace.

The evergreens used in the Advent wreath were a symbol of God’s “ever-lasting nature” or immortality.

Back in ancient Rome, people used decorative wreaths as a sign of vic-

tory. Some believe that this is where the

hanging of wreaths on doors came from. Since these times, many wreaths have been made.

Some are made for crafts, others for purely decoration, and yet others have deeper meanings.

In Germany, where the tradition of Christmas trees can be traced to, a Lutheran tradition emerged -- the Advent wreath.

The Advent wreath is made of ever-green and is symbolic of eternity in God’s grace. It has three purple can-dles that represent Penance, Sorrow and Expectation, and one pink candle which stands for Hope and Joy.

The Advent wreath represents the four weeks of Advent and is used with white candles during the Christmas season.

In conclusion it can be said that the use of beautiful Christmas wreaths is a very old tradition but there is no such concrete evidence on the history of Christmas wreaths.

History of Christmas wreathIn the Western world, the birthday

of Jesus Christ has been celebrated on December 25th since AD 354; it has gradually come to be celebrated by the non-Catholics as well replacing an earlier date of January 6th. Christ-mas is a celebration of love and mirth symbolized by the Nativity, the Santa, the caribou, the poinsettia and the evergreens. All those bring home the spirit of love and life. And this is the spirit that makes Christmas so popular throughout the world.

Ancient people were hunters and spent most of their time outdoors. The seasons and weather played a very important part in their lives and because of this they had a great reverence for, and even worshipped, the sun. The Norsemen of Northern Europe saw the sun as a wheel that changed the seasons. It was from the word for this wheel, houl, that the word Yule (another name for Christmas) is thought to have come. At Winter Solstice the Norsemen lit

bonfires, told stories and drank sweet ale.

From the middle of the 17th century until the early 18th century the Chris-tian Puritans suppressed Christmas celebrations in Europe and America. In 1644 all Christmas activities were banned in England. This included decorating houses with evergreens and eating mince pies. After a lull in Christmas celebrations the festival returned with a bang in the Victorian Era (1837-1901). The Victorians gave us the kind of Christmas we know today, reviving the tradition of carol singing, borrowing the practice of card giving from St. Valentine’s day and popularising the Christmas tree.

There were mid-winter festivals in ancient Babylon and Egypt, and Germanic fertility festivals also took place at this time. The birth of the ancient sun-god Attis in Phrygia was celebrated on December 25th, as was the birth of the Persian sun-god, Mithras.

Dear Santa

Make MyChristmas!

It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey.

Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends.

His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young.

Obeying Jesus’ words to “sell what you own and give the money to the poor,” Nicholas used his whole inheri-tance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering.

It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the coun-tryside helping the poor and sick.

One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slav-ery or prostitution by their father by providing them with a dowry so that they could be married.

In those days a young woman’s father had to offer prospective hus-bands something of value-a dowry.

This poor man’s daughters, without dowries, were therefore destined to be sold into slavery.

When the good saint heard of the family’s plight, he went to their home late one night and anonymously tossed three bags of gold down the chimney.

Miraculously, a bag fell into each of the sisters stockings, were hanging by the fire to dry.

His kindhearted gift made it possible for all three sisters to marry. The happy father, wishing to know his benefactor, ran after Nicholas and recognised him, but the holy man ‘required him not to tell nor discover this thing as long as he lived’.

This led to the custom of chil-dren hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas.

Over the course of many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors.

He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while

still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known

throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. This was traditionally considered a lucky day to make large purchases or to get married.

Another story tells of three theologi-cal students, traveling on their way to study in Athens.

A wicked innkeeper robbed and murdered them, hiding their remains in a large pickling tub.

It is happened that Bishop Nicho-las, traveling along the same route, stopped at this very inn. In the night he dreamed of the crime, got up, and summoned the innkeeper.

As Nicholas prayed earnestly to God the three boys were restored to life and wholeness. St. Nicholas appears and appeals to God to return them to life and to their families.

And so St. Nicholas is the patron

and protector of children. There are many stories of his having

rescued sailors from shipwreck. It is written in the Roman Breviary,

which is the ‘official account’, that ‘in his youth on a sea voyage he saved the ship from a fearful storm’.

Greek and Russian sailors appeal to him for protection and carry in the cabin of ships an image of the saint with a perpetually burning lamp.

It is in accordance with the spirit of Christianity and other religions that a drowning man needs help, no matter what the moral purpose of his voyage through life may have been up to the hour of disaster.

On St. Nicholas’ Eve, youngsters would set out food for the saint, straw for his horses and schnapps for his attendant.

The next morning, obedient chil-dren awoke to find their gifts replaced with sweets and toys, found their offer-ing untouched, along with a rod or a bundle of switched.

By Francis P. Church, first published in The New York Sun in 1897. [See The People’s Almanac, pp. 1358–9.]

We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is num-bered among the friends of The Sun:

Dear Editor—I am 8 years old. Some of my little

friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O’Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that noth-ing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelli-gence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

He exists as certainly as love and gener-osity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is

a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that cur-tain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

About the ExchangeFrancis P. Church’s editorial, “Yes Vir-

ginia, There is a Santa Claus” was an immediate sensation, and went on to became one of the most famous editorials ever written. It first appeared in the The New York Sun in 1897, almost a hundred years ago, and was reprinted annually until 1949 when the paper went out of business.

Thirty-six years after her letter was printed, Virginia O’Hanlon recalled the events that prompted her letter:

“Quite naturally I believed in Santa Claus, for he had never disappointed me. But when less fortunate little boys and girls said there wasn’t any Santa Claus, I was filled with doubts. I asked my father, and he was a little evasive on the sub-ject.

“It was a habit in our family that when-ever any doubts came up as to how to pronounce a word or some question of historical fact was in doubt, we wrote to the Question and Answer column in The Sun. Father would always say, ‘If you see it in the The Sun, it’s so,’ and that settled the matter.

“ ‘Well, I’m just going to write The Sun and find out the real truth,’ I said to father.

“He said, ‘Go ahead, Virginia. I’m sure The Sun will give you the right answer, as

it always does.’ ”And so Virginia sat down and wrote

her parents’ favorite newspaper. Her letter found its way into the hands

of a veteran editor, Francis P. Church. Son of a Baptist minister, Church had covered the Civil War for The New York Times and had worked on the The New York Sun for 20 years, more recently as an anonymous editorial writer. Church, a sardonic man, had for his personal motto, “Endeavour to clear your mind of cant.” When contro-versal subjects had to be tackled on the editorial page, especially those dealing with theology, the assignments were usu-ally given to Church.

Now, he had in his hands a little girl’s letter on a most controversial matter, and he was burdened with the responsibility of answering it.

“Is there a Santa Claus?” the childish scrawl in the letter asked. At once, Church knew that there was no avoiding the question. He must answer, and he must answer truthfully. And so he turned to his desk, and he began his reply which was to become one of the most memorable editorials in newspaper history.

Church married shortly after the edi-torial appeared. He died in April, 1906, leaving no children.

Virginia O’Hanlon went on to graduate from Hunter College with a Bachelor of Arts degree at age 21. The following year she received her Master’s from Colum-bia, and in 1912 she began teaching in the New York City school system, later becoming a principal. After 47 years, she retired as an educator. Throughout her life she received a steady stream of mail about her Santa Claus letter, and to each reply she attached an attractive printed copy of the Church editorial. Virginia O’Hanlon Douglas died on May 13, 1971, at the age of 81, in a nursing home in Valatie, N.Y.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus…
