“FEAST OF THE LORD” “TYPES AD SHADOWS OF CHRIST”
Dr. Jeff Hamm
Nations the world over celebrate holidays. Many are religious in nature but few are instituted by God.
God instituted seven Biblical holidays celebrated by Israel. These holidays are discussed throughout the Bible in
both Testaments. However, the one chapter of the Bible devoted to the discussion of all seven is Leviticus 23. It
is in this chapter that we discover that these annual holidays are called “the feast of the Lord”(cf Lev. 23:4).
With that expression, God indicates that the feasts belong to Him and are instituted by Him. Therefore, only on
His terms can these times be rightly honored and at His invitation can participants enter into their blessings.
These feasts are also called “Holy Convocations,” which literally means a time of meeting between God
and His people. Since these seven Biblical holidays are appointed times for holy purposes, they carry with them
immense sacredness and solemnity.
These seven holidays are prophetic in nature and paint for us pictures of the events of the Lords
redemptive work. Typically, they point to Calvary where Jesus voluntary gave His life for the sins of the world
(Passover) and climax at His return and the institution of the Messianic kingdom at the end of the age
(Tabernacles).
Types and Shadows
As we study the feast of the Lord, we discover many types that point to Christ. The study of typology in the
Scriptures is the examination of patterns of action in the redemptive plan of God that are too “coincidental” to
be accredited to any origin but God. The word “type” is derived from a Greek term τπ, tuñpos, which occurs 16 times in the New Testament translated in English text in various forms. It is clear from these texts
that the New Testament writers use the word “type” with one general idea common to all, namely, “likeness.” A
person, event or thing in the Old Testament writings is so fashioned or appointed as to resemble the redemptive
work of Christ.
The word shadow comes to us from Hebrews 10:1, “For the law having a shadow of the good things to
come”—as if the substance or reality that was still future cast its shadow beforehand into the books of the Old
Testament. Some theologians hold to the idea that the shadow is cast backwards through time from the New
Testament reality.1 Dr. Karl Coke supports the idea that the shadow of Christ is cast pre-creation forward, for
“Christ is the Lamb slain from the foundations of the world.” Early in the writings of the Old Testament the
shadow is long as in early morning and it is sometimes hard to see the resemblance, but as we draw closer to the
event the shadows becomes more clear, such as high noon when the sun is directly over head the clear the
shadows portray His image. Perhaps another view would be that the early images of Christ are faint and then
come into focus as detail is added and then it becomes clear. “Shadow” implies dimness and shadiness, but it
also implies a measure of resemblance between the one and the other.
1 P. Fairbairn, Typology of Scripture, 2 volumes; Angus, The Bible HandBook; Andrew Jukes, Law of Offerings in Leviticus; Mather,
Gospel of Old Testament, Explanation of Types; McEwen, Grace and Truth: Types and Figures of the Old Testament; Soltau,

GGGGGGGGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttt HHHHHHHHHHHHaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssstttttttttttt CCCCCCCCCCCChhhhhhhhhhhhuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrcccccccccccchhhhhhhhhhhh
In determining the nature of Biblical inspiration and interpretation, nothing could be more significant than
determining the view Christ held regarding the Scriptures. Certainly no one ought to hold a lower view of
Scriptural interpretation than He held. His views of the Scriptural interpretation ought to be the determining
measuring rod and establish the norm for others in their attempt to study Old Testament typology. It was His
view that the revelation of His redemptive work was found in the Old Testament and all the things written about
Him in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.2
What are the characteristics of types and shadows? Types and shadows should contain certain well-
defined qualities. (1) It must be a true picture of Christ or something of His redemptive work that it
prefigures. A type is a sketch, of some well-defined feature of redemption, and therefore it must in some
distinct way resemble its antitype. For example Aaron as high priest is a rough figure of Christ the Great
High Priest, or the Day of Atonement in its Old Testament settings must be a true picture of the atoning
work of Christ. (2) The type must be of divine appointment. In its institution it is designed to bear a likeness
to the antitype. Both type and antitype are preordained from creation as essential parts of the scheme of
redemption. (3) A type always prefigures something future. A Scriptural type and predictive prophecy are
essentially the same, differing only in form. Types are pictures of Christ seen through the life experiences of
Old Testament characters, ceremonies and symbols. Predictive prophecies are inspired projections of Christ
through the mouths of holy prophets.3
Another thing in the study of types and shadows that should be kept in mind, is that a thing evil cannot be
the type of what is good and pure. It is difficult to give a agreeable classification of Biblical types, but they
may be disseminated under certain heads: (1) Personal types, by which are meant those characters of
Scripture whose lives and experiences illustrate some principle or truth of redemption. Such as Adam, who
is expressly described as the “figure of him that was to come” (Rom 5:14), Melchizedek, Abraham, Aaron,
Joseph, Jonah, etc. (2) Historical types, in which are included the great historical events that under
Providence became striking foreshadowing’s of good things to come, such as the Israeli deliverance from
the bondage of Egypt, the Wilderness Journey; the conquest of Canaan, the call of Abraham. (3) Ritual
types, such as the Altar, the Offerings, the Priesthood, the Tabernacle and its furniture. (4) Ceremonial
Types, such as Passover, Day of Atonement, Pentecost. There are typical persons, places, times, things,
actions, ceremonies in the Old Testament, and a respectful study of them leads into a thorough acquaintance
with the fullness Christ and His work.4
