When we are in possession of the ball, what makes us successful?

……

1. We are in possession of the ball: Build

In  order  to  increase  the  chance  of  keeping  the  ball  we  need  to  try  and  create  overloads  throughout  the  field.      From  a  goal  kick  we  want  the  goalkeeper  to  start  central.  Against  a  4-‐4-‐2  we  should  have  a  4  v  2  overload.  Against  a  4-‐2-‐3-‐1/4-‐3-‐3  we  should  have  a  3v1  overload.      Our  full  backs  need  to  push  high  in  order  to  force  back  the  opposiEon  wide  players.  Our  central  midfield  players  need  to  push  high  to  force  back  their  two  midfielders.      Should  they  press  aggressively  and  our  goalkeeper  needs  to  kick….?

1. We are in possession of the ball: Build

We  are  sEll  looking  to  create  overloads  throughout  the  park.      If  they  push  high  and  we  can  not  build  in  our  first  line,  we  are  looking  to  keep  their  forwards  high  with  our  centre  backs  spliSng,  but  create  3v1  with  high  full  backs,  low  wide  players  and  a  driTing  midfielder.    Even  though  we  have  kicked,  we  are  sEll  looking  to  build.    When  we  kick  and  win  possession,  we  can  play  back  to  begin  from  the  back  again.      Our  striker  is  trying  to  create  length  in  order  to  pull  their  defence  towards  their  own  goal.      We  are  trying  to  limit  2nd  Phase  football!!!!

2. We are not in possession of the ball: Pressing

ST  pick  a  side,  we  want  to  invite  them  to  play  to  their  weakest  defender.  Do  they  have  a  right  footed  centre  back  playing  on  the  leT  side?    ST  and  AM  press  the  ball  carrier.  They  also  cut  off  the  square  pass  to  the  other  CB  and  the  reverse  pass  to  the  opposite  CM.  RW  presses  LB  to  make  sure  they  can  not  gain  possession  without  pressure.  RB  presses  onto  LW  to  ensure  the  LB  can  not  play  one  touch  out.  Both  CM’s  press  high.      LW  covers  space  to  ensure  no  cross  field  switch.  Defence  push  up  high  to  cut  out  the  long  ball  into  strikers  feet  without  pressure.

2. We are not in possession of the ball: Delay

We  are  compact,  work  as  a  unit  and  do  not  let  them  create  an  overload  in  any  area,  except  from  in  their  last  line.      We  let  them  play  the  ball  around  the  back,  but  remained  focused,  engaged  and  ready  to  counter.      We  either  wait  for  a  trigger  to  begin  our  press  (mistake,  shout  from  our  ST,  Eme  limit).      We  are  aggressive  in  the  tackle,  and  communicate  (Pass  players  on).    Can  we  counter?
