GAUTENG GAMBLING BOARD: COMMUNITY GAMING AWARENESS BROCHURE THE GAUTENG GAMBLING BOARD IS A STATUTORY BODY ESTABLISHED IN TERMS OF SECTION 3 OF THE GAUTENG GAMBLING ACT, NO 4 OF 1995 AS AMENDED. PRIOR TO AUGUST 1996 BETTING ON HORSE-RACING AND OTHER SPORTING EVENTS WAS THE ONLY FORM OF LEGAL GAMBLING IN GAUTENG. DURING AUGUST 1996 THE GAUTENG GAMBLING ACT, NO 4 OF 1995 CAME INTO EFFECT. THIS ACT LEGALIZED OTHER FORMS OF GAMBLING IN THE PROVINCE AND PROVIDED FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE GAUTENG GAMBLING BOARD. THE GAUTENG GAMBLING BOARD IS RESPONSIBLE TO OVERSEE AND CONTROL GAMBLING ACTIVITIES IN GAUTENG. GAMBLING MYTHS AND FACTS The following are some of the myths and facts known in the gambling industry: Myth – Knowing teams and past performance records increases the chance of winning sports bets! Fact – Many things influence sport results like player injuries, odds, conditions and handicap systems. So remember, sports bets can never be a sure thing! Myth – Learning a system for gambling definitely increases your chances of winning! Fact – You can’t change the universal laws of chance, so there can never be a proven system for any gambling method. Results are always random. Remember, always count your losses! Myth – The longer the slot machine is played without a big win, the more likely it is to pay out the next time. Fact – Each spin of a slot machine produces a random number. While it seems jackpots payout at regular intervals, it is impossible for random numbers to be influenced by previous sequence of random numbers. Myth – If you keep track of the previous results, you can figure out future outcomes. Fact – Every gambling play is an independent random event with no memory. So previous outcomes (as in lottery draws, cards and slots) cannot influence future ones. 0800 006 008 GGB Info (Eng)_01.indd 1 2013/04/19 11:21 AM

• Educating them on how to prevent themselves from becoming compulsive gamblers

• Treating and providing counselling to those identifi ed as having problems so that they can regain control of their lives.

• Offering Self Exclusion services to those who wish to be banned from participating in gambling. This can be done in writing at the offi ces of Gauteng Gambling Board. People can call the Board on (011) 581 4800 to arrange appointments.
