Granite Falls Journal Recipe Of The Week

Chicken Hawaiian

Ingredients 2 whole chicken breasts, boned, skinned, and split 1 can (16 or 20 ounces) pineapple chunks in juice

1/4 cup soy sauce 1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground ginger

2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions Place the chicken, whole or cut into bite-size pieces, in a shallow glass bowl or baking dish. Drain the pineap-ple. Mix the pineapple juice with the soy sauce and ginger. Pour the mixture over the chicken. Marinate the chicken for 30 to 60 minutes, or overnight in the refrigerator. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease a 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish. Remove the chicken from the marinade, place it in the baking dish, and sprinkle with the cornstarch. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Turn the chicken, cover with the pineapple chunks and re-maining marinade, and bake for 15 minutes. Serve hot.

This recipe for Chicken Hawaiian is a good choice when unexpected company drops by because it can be easily extended by adding chunks of onions, mush-rooms, bell peppers, carrots, or broccoli. Just steam or sauté the vegetables separately and add to the bak-ing dish during the last 15 minutes of cooking. This is great served on rice.

Animal Cruelty Investigation

By the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office…The investigation continues into the intentional shoot-ing of livestock in the Petra Mill and Granite Falls Area. The livestock appearing to be targeted are cattle.

In late May of this year a report was filed of one cow that had been shot. The investigation was un-able to determine if the cow was intentionally or accidently shot.

In July a report was filed in the Grace Chapel Road area of a cow found dead. The owner stated it could possibly have been shot. The located cow was de-composed to the point where cause of death could not be determined.

In July a report was also filed listing multiple cattle shot in the Petra Mill Road area. A detective re-sponded to the report and observed (5) five cows with wounds. Two with injuries through the leg above the hoof area and at least two to three cows with wounds in the hip area. One cow is missing and presumed to have died.

The cows with the wounds in the hip are not recov-ering and will have to be put down; this includes a calf born this year.

The cattle appear to be shot with a small caliber rifle.

Caldwell County Animal Control was contacted and is assisting in the investigation.

If information regarding the suspect(s) involved in this crime please contact Caldwell County Investi-gations at 828-758-2324. If you would like to re-main anonymous contact Caldwell County Crimestoppers at 828-758-8300.

Joe Sims To Run For Caldwell County School Board

July 14, 2014 By Joe Sims…”Today I filed for reelection to the Caldwell County Board Of Education. I have had the pleasure of serving on this Board for the past year. During that time I have visited schools in the county, talked with many teachers, staff, and students, and come to understand the im-portance of the school board in the success of the school system. I have seen exceptional teaching and learning, and I have witnessed that light bulb going on for so many of our kids. My greatest pleasure has been seeing our schools succeed and work for kids. Our graduation rate is over 90% for the first time in our history, and more and more stu-dents are better prepared for college and work when they gradu-ate from our schools.

I want to continue to be a part of this success story. I want to bring my business experience and my love for this county to the Board. I currently have a child in the school system and a daughter that teaches in the school system. I had two other chil-dren go through Caldwell County Schools, and I have been very pleased with the education they received. I want to make sure that the success they had is afforded to every child in the county. My mission is, and will continue to be, to make sure that all our children get the best education and that our school staff have the level of support needed for success. That’s the kind of school system this county expects and deserves.

I promise if elected to the school board, I will listen to every-one and make deliberate, thoughtful decisions for the advance-ment of all children. I will continue to be visible in our schools and in all the communities of Caldwell County. For these reasons, and more, I proudly filed for a seat on the Caldwell County Board of Educa-tion today.”

Dr. Herb Says….Take These Steps To Health

Vitamins Our 60 trillion cells continuously undergo chemical reactions. Vitamins give them life and vitality, turn food into energy, abets growth and strength and provides disease prevention. A person only needs a teaspoonful of vitamins per day, but since our bodies can’t produce vitamins on their own, we must obtain them from food. All natural foods contain vitamins but they are destroyed through processing and cooking. Cutting and chopping food into small pieces, even washing it, causes vitamin loss. Vitamins differ greatly in stability. Vitamin B1 and folic acid are easily destroyed by air, heat, acid and metals, and readily dissolves in water. Even when rinds of certain fruits and vegetables are scratched or peeled, they lose a great amount of vitamin C. Vitamin B1 dissolves in water and is easily affected by temperature and contact with metals, alkali, and oxygen. Although vitamin B2 is less sensitive to heat, it is vulnerable to light and can be lost in wa-ter during cooking. Fat-soluble vitamins are more stable than water-soluble ones, but can easily be destroyed by high temperatures or contact with oxygen. Vitamins are destroyed in great quantity during the storage process, in both warm and cold condi-tions. Asparagus, for example, loses 50% of its vitamin C at 32F, and 90% at 70F. Chinese cabbage loses all its vitamin C in just a few days. Vitamin B1 in a humid place easily loses its potency. This is why there’s no benefit to buying fruit and vegetables in bulk at a discount. To reduce vitamin loss, buy small quantities as fresh and as frequently as possible. Store them in a dark place without airflow. Don’t soak them in water but wash quickly. When we endure stress, we quickly consume our vitamin stores, especially such antioxidants as vita-mins A, C, and E. A lack of sufficient vitamins weakens the immune system and causes insomnia, loss of appetite, over-sensitivity, and fatigue. These symptoms can occur long before the development of vitamin deficiency diseases, such as scurvy (vitamin C deficiency), and beriberi (vitamin B1 deficiency). Each vitamin has its unique deficiency symptoms, but vitamins also have relationships with each other. Missing or lacking only one can cause physical imbalances. People try to obtain vitamins through supplements, but artificially synthesized vitamin products aren’t as effective because of their low absorption rate. In addition, excessive vitamins at one time are lost through the body’s waste systems (urine and feces). This is why it’s absolutely best to obtain vita-mins through meals of raw, natural, organic food. Phytonutrients As the names suggest, phytonutrients exist only in plants. They’re usually found in the rinds and other exterior features of plants to defend against outside attacks by insects, etc. To strengthen the im-munity of our own bodies, we must consume the immune substances of plants.

Vitamins

That’s why it’s better to eat fruits and vegetables with rinds, leaves, stems, and roots. Known phytonu-trients include carotenoids in carrots, tomatoes, broccoli and oranges, anthocyanins in berries, soy isoflavones and catechins in green tea. Only 10% of functional phytonutrients are known, but as more are revealed, phytonutrients will factor greatly in health plans. And since phytonutrients are more ef-fective consumed fresh and whole, we need to consume them raw. Fiber In the past, food-processing techniques focused on eliminating fiber, as it was deemed unnecessary and difficult to digest. Now, fiber is recognized as useful in preventing and treating such diseases as diabetes, obesity and cancer, and helps healthy bowel elimination. A British scholar first addressed the importance of dietary fiber after realizing that the English suffer a higher incidence of colon cancer than do Africans. He noted that an English person’s average daily stool quantity was 110 grams, and it took 45 to 60 hours for them on average to have bowel movements after eating. In contrast, Africans had average daily stool quantity of 200 grams for urban dwellers, 300 grams for rural people, and their average elimination was between 30 and 40 hours. He found that a harmful bacterium, Saprogenous bacillus, existed largely in English stool, while African stool con-tained more beneficial bacteria. The reason: the Africans’ greater amount of vegetable intake gave them more fiber, which reduced their chance of colon cancer. According to a study at Washington University, lab mice with large fiber intake were less likely to de-velop cancer even when injected with carcinogens: 39% of the mice fed a large quantity of fiber devel-oped cancer, compared to 69% of those not fed fiber. Fiber is an excellent internal cleanser. It absorbs and removes harmful waste products and poisonous materials, while reducing cholesterol and heavy metal levels. Fiber absorbs water like a sponge, and adheres to digestive tracks, which reduces digestion duration. This cuts the time carcinogens stay in-side the body. Your colon contains approximately 100 types of bacterium, with a total of about a hundred trillion bacteria. Such beneficial bacteria as lactobacillus acidophilus or lactobacillus bifidus thrive on fiber in the colon, thus retarding the growth of harmful bacteria. They dissolve fiber to make vitamins and amino acids. Fiber can be obtained through vegetable, whole grains, marine plants, and mushrooms, but not through most processed food. And more fiber is obtained by eating raw food and fruits with rinds than through cooked food. Enzymes Enzymes participate in all processes of life: birth and death, growth and maintenance. They are the catalytic elements that accelerate chemical reactions by 108 to 1011 times. Some laundry detergents contain enzymes to accelerate the dissolution of proteins and removal of dirt.

Vitamins No matter how much good food we eat, the food can’t become part of our bodies without enzymes. Protein, for example, is too large to pass through blood vessels alone; enzymes must first break it down into molecularly miniscule amino acid. Enzymes also produce necessary substances, dissolve unneces-sary substances, and help eliminate harmful ones from the body. As we get older, they body’s natural production of enzymes slows down. That’s why elders often have more difficulty digesting food than do younger people. When digestive problems occur, many people generally take peptic medicines that contain enzymes, such as amylase that dissolves starches, prote-olytic enzymes, and lipolytic enzymes. As stress and environmental pollution increase, so does our need for enzymes. Since cooking and processing food destroys enzymes, you can see why modern people with busy lives often lack sufficient enzymes in their diet, and often suffer from poor digestion, stressed bodies, accelerated aging, and dis-eases. Enzymes also need vitamins and minerals to function properly, and these are also damaged and de-stroyed by cooking. Raw food supplies the enzymes, vitamins, and minerals you need. Chlorophyll Animals maintain life when they eat other organisms, either plants or other animals. They mostly can’t make nutritive substances on their own. Through the process of phytosynthesis plants can make nutrients, such as glucose, protein, and vitamins. When they spread their leaves toward the sun, the chlorophyll that colors them green absorbs solar energy and produces glucose from water and carbon dioxide – an economic method of nutrition productivity. Chlorophyll bears a striking chemical similarity to hemoglobin, the vital component of blood. Chloro-phyll’s phorphyrin structure has magnesium as its central metallic element; hemoglobin has iron. When an animal eats grass, a metathesis occurs in its intestinal villi, transforming a large amount of magnesium into iron. Metathesizing chlorophyll creates increased hemoglobin in the blood, which is why vegetarian animals can maintain life by eating only green grass. That’s also why some people call chlorophyll “green blood.” Chlorophyll makes fresh, clean blood, and helps revive damaged cells, limits cancer cell growth and virus activation, and functions as an anti-allergen. In green photodynamic therapy (PDT), chlorophyll reduces side-effects and increases the effectiveness of standard PDT, a therapy which kills cancer cells with light. According to a 1999 study by the Eighth Asia Nutrition Study Board, chlorophyll also helps prevent cancer by defending against harmful variations in meat produced by cooking. But chlorophyll is also easily damaged by heat. Steamed vegetables produce greenish liquid that contains the leached chloro-phyll – this is why it’s better to eat green vegetables raw.

Bee Pollen…Nature’s Perfect Food

Bee Pollen is a pure, natural food source. Often referred to as “Nature’s Perfect Food” or “The Miracle Food,” Bee Pollen is the most complete and balanced food in nature. It is the only natural food source known to contain every essential nutrient needed by mankind, and it is easily assimilated by the body. Bee Pollen contains 96 nutrients including 16 vitamins, 16 minerals, 16 enzymes and coenzymes, and all the essential amino acids. It also contains a variety of sugars, carbohydrates, gums, fats and oils. The total fats and oils usually make up only about 5% of the pollen. There are two types of pollen, those that depend on air to spread them to new areas and those that remain in the flower. Bees are attracted to the heavy, sticky pollen that remains on the flowers. Bee Pollen is the male germ cells of flowering plants and is the starting point of production of fruits, grains, legumes, and vegetables. If bees can only reach one color of flower, their pollen will all be the same color. If they can reach a variety of flowers, their pollen will be several different colors. Research has shown that as bees collect pollen from flowers, they select only those flowers high in nutrients and ignore the poor ones. This explains why bee pollen contains such highly concentrated amounts of nutrients. Although bees have collected pollen for centuries, it was only a couple of decades ago that beekeepers invented special hives that enabled them to collect the pollen. A series of mesh-like enclosures are set up around the hive. As the bees fly through these enclosures, the pollen pellets fall from the bees’ legs and are collected in special containers. Once the pollen is collected, it is dried, cleaned, and prepared for human consumption. Bee Pollen can be purchased in tablet or granular form. Bee Pollen granules can be sprinkled on foods or mixed with yogurt. However, due to its strong taste, many people prefer to take Bee Pollen in tablet form, since tablets can be easily swallowed. Several research studies have shown that Bee Pollen helps build up strength and energy, provides needed carbohydrates in the purest form, acts as a tonic stimulant, restores poor appetites, and works as an ideal body regulator – promoting weight gain in underweight people and weight-loss in over-weight people. Bee Pollen has been used by athletes for centuries to increase their energy and stamina. Many college and professional athletic teams include Bee Pollen as part of their regular fitness program. Many Olympic Champions have attributed their success to Bee Pollen. Steroids, and other drugs used by athletes to increase body weight and muscle growth, can have seri-ous side effects. For this reason, it is not surprising that so many athletes have turned to Bee Pollen tablets as a natural, harmless way to gradually improve cell rebuilding and growth.

2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is that Spirit.”

Jesus is the Lord. All things were created by

Him. He did creation, before He became a

human. He was the Spirit at creation who

moved upon the waters. Jesus was the Spirit

who appeared to Moses in the form of a fire in

the bush that did not burn. As the Israelites

traveled through the wilderness, they did all

drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank

of that Spiritual Rock that followed them:

and that Rock was Christ. Jesus was the

Spirit who inspired the prophets what to write

in the Old Testament. Jesus was the Spirit

who, before the flood, tried to reach the peo-

ple who were in the prison of sin to repent,

before they would be destroyed. Jesus is the

Spirit, who gives the gifts to each member of

His spiritual body. Jesus is at the right hand

of the Father, and by way of spirit, makes in-

tercession for us. Jesus is the mediator be-

tween God and mankind. If we sin, Jesus is

our advocate. Do you find it strange that the

Father talked to the Son and the Son talked to

the Father, but neither ever talked to the Holy

Spirit? Nor did the Holy Spirit ever talk to

the Father or the Son?

KidsAndCars.org Launches White House Petition drive To Prevent Needless Child Deaths

In Hot Vehicles

By KidsAndCars.org ...KidsAndCars.org launched a "We the People" petition drive today on the White House petition website (http://wh.gov/lL8nX). The petition will push the Obama Admini-stration to authorize the U.S. Department of Trans-portation (DOT) to provide funding for research and development of innovative technology to de-tect a child left alone in the rear seat of a vehicle. In the past 20 years more than 670 U.S. children have died in hot cars. Already in 2014 at least 17 children have died in hot cars, reports KidsAnd-Cars.org, the only and leading national nonprofit group dedicated solely to preventing injuries and deaths of children in and around motor vehicles. KidsandCars.org works with David Diamond, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at the University of South Florida who studies the brain and memory, includ-ing people who have unknowingly forgotten chil-dren. He finds that, "These memory errors are committed by normal, attentive and loving par-ents. Many of these parents had believed that they could never forget their children, until their chil-dren died," he said. "Scientific studies confirm that you can't assume your memory will never fail, and the consequences of a memory failure can be tragic." Specifically, the petition urges the Obama Ad-ministration to authorize the Department of Trans-portation to: * Provide funding for research and development of innovative technology. * Identify, evaluate and test new technology to ac-celerate implementation of the most feasible and effective solutions. * Require installation of technology in ALL vehicles and/or child safety seats to prevent children from being left alone in vehicles. "The auto industry already recognizes we're hu-man and our memories often fail us. You get a warning if you don't buckle your seatbelt, leave a car door open, your gas is low or you leave your headlights on," explains Janette Fennell, founder

and president of KidsAndCars.org. "If you forget your keys in the ignition, you get a warning. If a child is left behind, you absolutely need a warning. The federal government and automakers have the ability to solve this problem, and we need action now." KidsAndCars.org needs 100,000 signatures on its petition in 30 days (July 15-Aug. 12). "We believe the public wants action now," Fennell said. "These deaths are happening too frequently in communi-ties across the country and the petition will ensure White House attention and a response." Other successful child safety initiatives promoted by KidsAndCars.org include adoption of federal safety standards requiring all vehicles be equipped with trunk release latches to prevent trunk entrap-ment, safer power window switches to prevent chil-dren from being strangled, and brake transmission shift interlock systems so children cannot inadver-tently knock a vehicle into gear. Most recently a federal DOT rule was issued requiring rear visibil-ity systems as standard equipment on all new pas-senger vehicles by May 2018.

About KidsAndCars.org: Founded in 1996, KidsAndCars.org is the only and leading national nonprofit child safety organi-zation dedicated solely to preventing injuries and deaths of children in and around vehicles. KidAnd-Cars.org promotes awareness among parents, care-givers and the general public about the dangers to children, including backover and frontover inci-dents, and heat stroke from being inadvertently left in a vehicle. The organization works to prevent tragedies through data collection, education and public awareness, policy change, product redesign and survivor advocacy.

As a side note, it is not a crime in North Carolina to leave a child unattended in a vehi-cle. A bill was introduced in 2009 but did not pass...

Keeping Southern Gospel Music Alive

Tony Burchette is a native of Hudson, NC and now resides in Granite Falls, NC. Tony and his wife Megan have seven children and five grandchil-dren. He has been in the ministry work for 30 years. He was saved at Ambassador Baptist in Hudson, NC in 1982. After receiving Christ as his personal Saviour, he prayed and ask God to let him work in the ministry and sing for him. In 1985 he, along with three brothers, Danny, Terry, and Larry M e s s e r , formed the group Broth-ers in Christ. They later changed the name to Journeys End. This group traveled proclaiming the Gospel in word and song, for eleven years. In 1996 Tony moved to Ruther-fordton, NC, along with Ron Epley, Clyde Smith, Johnny Lovelace, Eddie Bazzle and formed the group The Praise Masters. Tony traveled with them for 7 years and in 2003 came off the road due to sickness. After a year off the road and many days of prayer, he knew in his heart that God wasn't fin-ished with him. He started singing again, this time going full-time in the ministry. He along with friends Lynn Swizinsky (PA) and Eric Cooper (MD) traveled selective dates together as "Necessity Trio". He then formed the Quartet, Grateful Heart. The Quartet members consisted of Tony Burchette, Megan Burchette, Laura Sturgis, and Ron Watts. The group members were no strangers to gospel music. Laura, Ron, and Tony traveled together with the Praise Masters until 2003, Ron came off the road in 2004, and Laura came off in May 2006. Knowing their hearts desire to sing the gospel, Tony brought them together in November 2006, once again to work for the Lord. In December 2007, after a brief time off the road for Tony to

undergo more operations, the group decided to take some time to spend with their families. Today, Tony continues to travel as a soloist. Throughout the years in the ministry, Tony has been blessed to share the stage with Gospel Music Artist such as; The Booth Brothers, The Nelons, Shellem Cline, The Kingsmen, The Speer Family, Squire Parsons, Eva Mae Lefevers, The Hayes Family, The Whis-nants, Karen Peck & New River, The New Hinsons, Toney Brothers, The Couriers, Noahs Faith and many local artist. He has have been blessed to travel and sing in 42 States. Tony first national ra-dio release was in July 2014. The song came in at # 78 in the SGN Scoops Magazine. The song moved up 21 spots for the month of July to # 57. Tony counts it an honor to still be singing today and has been recognized as a singer/songwriter in Southern Gospel Music. In 2013, Lighthouse Gos-pel Music Association name Tony “Male Vocalist of the Year.” This year he was nominated for three categories; Soloist, Male Vocalist, and Song of the Year. The winners will be announced in Oct. at the Lighthouse GMA Convention in Knightsdale, NC. Our ministry is all about spreading the Gospel and seeing souls come to Christ. We as Christians should always be willing to go and work in the field whenever and wherever God calls. Our prayer is that you will see Jesus and feel his love in the songs we sing. We sing songs that lift up, encourage and edify the saints as well as minister to the lost. This year in December Tony Burchette Ministries along with his Church- Journey's End will be feed-ing 30 families for the Christmas Holiday. Tony sets up at different stores in Caldwell County and sings Live Christmas Music as shoppers come and go and takes donations to help others in the com-munity. What a blessing and honor it is to be a part of the family of God. I know that there are many among us who can say that God has done marvel-ous things in their life.

America is Pregnant Again Pregnant as defined by Webster’s 1828 dictionary is to be full. We all know that those full in pregnancy have a delivery coming soon. As we reflect upon American’s children of by-gone days it gives us an indication of what to expect in her current pregnancy. When America was pregnant during the war of inde-pendence, she gave birth to a battered but strong child of freedom and personal liberty. Nearly a century later America became pregnant as northern brothers fought her southern brothers which resulted in the birth of a bloody baby called Emancipation born on January 1, 1863. On October the 21st, 1917 once again the U.S.A was expecting; pregnant as the world watched in horror as she delivered a victory child in WWI to the tune of 10 million killed and 20 million wounded. Less than 25 years later the twin child was delivered named WWII. This child introduced the world into the Atomic Age which haunts the nations still yet today. America has a couple more children that she seems to try and forget; their names are Korea and Vietnam. In 1973 America tried to put an end to her pregnancy addi-tion by passing an abortion law called Roe vs. Wade, or Pro-choice. However America still finds ways to become pregnant in various areas. She’s pregnant today with drug addiction, alcohol, and pornography. Today she finds herself pregnant in a national debt of nearly 18 trillion dollars and a shortage of Nanny’s to bottle feed her lenders. As of today, let’s determine that we will impregnate America with love, morality, beauty, courage, and downright goodness. May our churches and citizens of concern become responsible for our ac-tions and nurse our beloved America back to honor and health as we await her next offspring that is certain to affect us all. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 33:12a) We invite you to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at 699 Pleasant Hill Road in Lenoir. Call 828-726-6564 for more information. God Bless You, Pastor John Gray

Aunt Bee's Kerosene Pickles

1 bunch dill 6 hot peppers 6 cloves garlic 6 slices onion

6 tsp. whole spices 6 lumps alum

1 qt. cider vinegar 2 qts. water

1 c. salt 6 one-quart pickling jars

Wash and dry enough cucumbers for 6 sterilized 1 quart jars. In bottom of each jar place: some dill, 1 hot pepper, 1 clove of garlic, 1 slice of onion, 1 tea-spoon whole spices, small lump of alum and cu-cumbers. Combine vinegar, water and salt in saucepan. Let mixture come to a rolling boil, then pour into the jars. Seal immediately. Makes 6 quarts.

The above recipe for Aunt Bee's Kerosene Pickles was found on the internet in a search. Not sure if this recipe is correct but it would still be interesting and fun to give it a try.

In the second-season episode "The Pickle Story," Aunt Bee makes quarts of inedible pickles to enter in a contest at the county fair. Andy and Barney refer to her pickles as "kerosene cucumbers." The episode often places on "Top Ten Favorite Epi-sodes Lists" of fans and critics.
