Insights Quarterly, Research Summary: Corporate Data
1Q3, 2011 Research by Connection Research
The Critical Issue – Are Users Finally Getting in Touch with Corporate Data?
Getting users in touch with corporate data has always been one of the Holy Grails of ICT. There
have been many technologies – DSS, EIS, Query and Reporting tools, 4GLs, and most recently
Business Intelligence (BI). It remains an elusive aim, but is that changing?
Technology Relevance and ICT Improvements
Relevance of Technologies/ICT Strategies
Integrated enterprise-wide information access is the number two relevant or interesting
technology for CIOs, after virtualisation. The importance of BI to CIOs is reflected in the fact
that it comes out ahead of some more widely discussed ICT issues such as security and worker
mobility. BI is a technology firmly on the radar of CIOs.
Getting Users in Touch with Corporate DataThe importance of Business IntelligenceAustralian CIO Survey Analysis
In mid 2011, Fujitsu and Microsoft commissioned Connection Research to survey CIOs
from over 200 Australian companies. This research summary, one in a continuing series
based on regular quarterly surveys of CIOs, looks at the views of CIOs and ICT managers.

Insights Quarterly, Research Summary: Corporate Data
2Q3, 2011 Research by Connection Research
The benefit of BI lies in its ability to enable better business decision-making, which is particularly
important in the current economic slowdown. ICT’s central role in enabling that process is clear
from the fact that improving access to corporate data was cited by CIOs as the most important
of a range of considerations when making ICT improvements.
Implementation vs Investment
Based on the survey responses, the level of implementation of BI is likely to catch up with other
core business systems in the near future, given the significant number of pilot and ad hoc uses.
Implementation is most advanced in the manufacturing and wholesale/retail sectors, with
health/education/welfare noticeably some way behind.

IQ Matrix (Implementation vs Investment) for Enterprise Applications/Content
The survey responses show that while BI implementation is not particularly high, many
organisations are trialling BI solutions on a limited scale, and planned investment in
the next year is high compared with other enterprise applications.
BI is prominent In terms of investment in the next 12 months. The level of investment by sector
largely reflects the current level of implementation, i.e. the more mature the implementation is,
the higher the expected level of investment. This suggests that the businesses are seeing the
returns and looking to expand BI use.

Insights Quarterly, Research Summary: Corporate Data
4Q3, 2011 Research by Connection Research
The Business Impact
There has been much rationalisation in the market for BI and other end user access technologies
in the past few years, with most leading tools acquired by the major software vendors. While
BI’s promise has remained largely unfulfilled, it remains an area of significant investment, helped
by the need for greater business efficiency in the current economic slowdown. Implementation
doesn’t seem to be a one-off process. The more that BI is implemented the more organisations
are looking to make further investment, perhaps reflecting the benefits of the latest generation
of more visual, intuitive tools and their continued move out across the organisation and on to
a variety of devices.

BI and the Cloud
Despite its growing importance, CIOs and ICT Managers report that BI is the least likely
enterprise application to have been moved to the Cloud, perhaps because of the sensitive
nature of the data. The wholesale/retail sector was ahead of other industries in this respect,
with over 22% reporting that they were either already using the cloud for BI (the only industry
sector to do so) or were well on the way to implementation. It’s understandable, given the
dispersed need for business information across this fast-moving sector.
