Exercise• What makes a vowel a vowel?

– Can you make a vowel sound without your voice?

• Which hiragana do not have “ten ten”?

– Can you feel your mouth move when you say them?

• Pick a hiragana that has “ten ten”– What changes when you say the hiragana with “ten ten” and without?

• What makes the “H” row so special?– Try whispering the whole row, then try whispering the “B” row, then the “P” row

– Try saying the “vowel” row out loud, then the “H” row. What’s the difference?

Present Tense Noun Sentence

Noun1 wa Noun2 *(Verb)(da・desu)

Definition: N1 is N2 N1 is (a/an) N2

Always ends in da or desu (だ・です) (not “verbs” but act as the verb”)

Examples: She is Yumiko. This is a book.

*(da ・ desu) are used as a verb. If the word before (da ・ desu) is a noun, it is a NOUN sentence

Noun1 wa/ga Noun2 wo Verb

Definition: Verb happens to N2 *Subject optional, N1 does verb to N2

Always ends in an u or masu (う・ます)

Examples: Eat sushi. / John eats sushi. Naomi throws a ball.

Noun1 waい-Adjective (Verb)(desu OR nothing)

Definition: N1 is い-adjective.

い-Adjectives can not end in da. Informal ends at the adjective. Formal ends with です。

Examples: (The) tree is tall. Sandra is fast.
