Thinking of Breast Surgery? Consider This BREAST SURGERY CAN GIVE YOU A more balanced figure and help boost your confidence. If you have large breasts, breast reduction can relieve back pain and related symptoms. But surgery is not right for everyone. Take this advice to help you know if cosmetic breast surgery is right for you. BREAST AUGMENTATION Implants make your breasts larger or fuller. Augmentation may be a good option if you feel strongly that your breasts: Are too small Are different sizes or shapes Have lost their form and volume due to aging, pregnancy, or weight loss You may be a good candidate if you’re healthy and your breasts are fully developed. In addition to making your breasts fuller, implants can help improve the balance of your figure. They also may boost your self- image. Keep your expectations in check: The goal of surgery should be improvement, not perfection. Risks include changes in nipple or breast sensation, or hardening of the area around the implant. Implants can leak or rupture. You may need surgery to correct or improve original results. Breast implants also may affect your ability to breastfeed. Keep in mind that most health plans will not cover breast augmentation or any related complications. BREAST REDUCTION During a breast reduction, a surgeon removes tissue, fat, and skin from the breasts to make them smaller. Women who seek this procedure often have health problems caused by the weight of their breasts. Breast reduction may be an option for you if you have: Skin irritation beneath the breasts Sleeping problems Back, neck, or shoulder pain Discontent about breast size One benefit of breast reduction is it can make your bust more proportional to the rest of your body. It also may help boost your self-esteem. And your clothes might fit better, too. Some limited research also shows breast reduction can provide relief from physical symptoms. Potential complications include difficulty breastfeeding and, rarely, changes in nipple or breast sensation. Women of all ages can undergo the surgery, but it’s best if your breast development is complete. Unlike breast implants, your health plan might cover breast reduction surgery. Your surgeon’s office can work with you to find out the coverage details.

BREAST AUGMENTATIONImplants make your breasts larger or fuller. Augmentation may be a good option if you feel strongly that your breasts: • Are too small • Are different sizes or shapes • Have lost their form and volume due to

aging, pregnancy, or weight loss

You may be a good candidate if you’re healthy and your breasts are fully developed.

In addition to making your breasts fuller, implants can help improve the balance of your figure. They also may boost your self-image.

Keep in mind that most health plans will not cover breast augmentation or any related complications.

decongestants, steroid nasal sprays, allergy immunotherapy, or surgery. An alternative to medications and invasive surgery is the balloon sinuplasty procedure. This procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed both in outpatient surgery and in the physician’s office.

HOW DOES BALLOON SINUPLASTy  WORk? unlike conventional sinus surgery, which cuts away tissue to open the blockage, sinuplasty opens sinus passages with a balloon. During sinuplasty a thin, flexible tube, called a catheter, is equipped with a small balloon at the end. The device is guided through the nostrils into the blocked sinus. The balloon is then inflated just enough to expand the sinus area, causing the opening to become wider, this allows the sinuses to drain properly and reduces the occurrence of sinus infection and makes breathing easier.

Getting Relief from SinusitisTHE SIMPLE ACT OF BREATHINg IS NOT so easy for the millions of people each year who suffer from sinusitis. Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation of the sinus cavities. Often mistaken as a cold or allergies, it is important to get treatment.

Sinusitis often has some or all of the following symptoms: • Pain in the upper jaw and teeth • Headache • Pain or tenderness when your forehead,

nose, or cheek is touched • Loss of smell and a stuffy nose • Fever • Fatigue • A cough that may be more severe at night • Runny nose or nasal congestion • Sore throat

HOW IS SINUSITIS TREATED?Treating sinusitis is important for your overall health, comfort, and quality of life. Treatments include antibiotics, nasal

Since there is no cutting associated with balloon sinuplasty, there’s less risk of scar tissue that could reblock the sinus, and recovery time is faster than conventional sinus surgery. The procedure can be performed in the office without anesthesia. Many people can resume normal activity immediately afterward. ■

IF YOu ARE ExPERIENCINg INTENSE, intractable pain in your legs or arms from inflamed spinal nerves, then an epidural steroid injection might be the preferred treatment to quickly give you relief. Often, this pain is caused by the narrowing of the passages through which nerves travel from the spine to your arms or legs. This narrowing can cause inflammation of the spinal nerves.

A number of conditions may contribute to this narrowing, including herniated disks, “slipped” vertebrae, joint cysts, bone spurs, or thickening ligaments in the spine because of spinal arthritis.

When injected, the steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect that open up these passages and provides pain relief. The medication is delivered to the epidural area, which is a fat-filled area that covers the spinal cord and protects it and the surrounding nerves from damage.

BEfORE THE PROcEDURE An epidural corticosteroid injection is generally an outpatient procedure. • You will arrive at your doctor’s office and

may be asked to change into a surgical gown to make the injection process easier.

• You may want to request mild sedation for the procedure, but most patients receive just local anesthetic.

• If you have diabetes, an allergy to contrast dye, or certain other medical conditions, you’ll want to discuss any concerns with your doctor before getting the procedure.

Based on your medical condition, your doctor may request other specific preparations.

Epidural Steroid Injection: What to ExpectDURING THE PROcEDUREAn epidural corticosteroid injection is a fairly straightforward procedure:1. Your doctor will use an x-ray machine

showing moving images on a screen to guide the needle as he or she makes the injection and ensure that the needle is in the correct location.

2. In addition, contrast dye is injected at the site to ensure that the medication will be traveling precisely to where it needs to go in the epidural space.

3. The doctor will inject the corticosteroid medication itself, often along with a local anesthetic to help with pain relief.

AfTER THE PROcEDUREOnce the procedure is done, you can return home. usually, you’ll be able to return to normal activities on the following day. The steroids usually begin working within one to three days.

Many people obtain several months of improvement of pain and function from the injections. If the injection is effective, it can be repeated.

If you don’t experience pain relief, talk with your doctor. This may be a sign that the pain is coming from some place other than the spinal nerves. ■

LOW TESTOSTERONE, ALSO KNOWN AS Low T, is a condition in men when there is not enough testosterone, or male hormone, being produced. It is more common as men get older. As many as 13 million men in the u.S. may be low in testosterone with the majority of them being untreated. Testosterone is produced by the testes, and testosterone production is controlled by signals from the pituitary gland in the brain.

SyMPTOMSTestosterone affects many areas of the male body and male health. Symptoms of low testosterone include fatigue, lower sex drive, erectile dysfunction or problems obtaining and maintaining erections, loss of muscle mass, increase in body fat, infertility, and irritability or mood changes. Low testosterone can also be an early warning sign for cardiovascular or heart disease.

DIAGNOSISIn addition to a physical examination in the office, evaluation for low testosterone will include blood tests and, depending on the level, may require additional testing including x-rays.

TREATMENTLow testosterone can be caused by more than one condition, and treatment depends on the reason for the low hormone level. Some cases of low testosterone can be treated with testosterone replacement therapy and options for treatment include topical gels and patches, injections, or pellets placed under the skin. Other causes of low testosterone may require different treatment including surgery.

If you have any of the symptoms discussed and are considering testosterone therapy or would like to have your testosterone level checked, please contact (888) 444-USMD for a free physician referral. ■
