The Steeple December 2016

Pastor’s Reflection in Advent… (2016)

I’ve “wandered” off in many directions, quite a ways from “home” in my lifetime. I love to travel. While growing up, there were family trips to Iowa, Montana and Western Canada; as a college student, to Alaska to work and travel, and around the United States and to Europe on college choir tours. Then, from a young age, and on to the present, canoe trips in the Boundary Waters and into Canada; later, after college, to South Asia to serve in agricultural development work with an overseas Chris-tian development agency. Sally and I and our kids have also travelled around the country and in Canada on various vacations. Meanwhile, we’ve “wandered off” on new adventures as I have served as a pastor in Eastern North Dakota, and now for over 18 years in the Southwest Min-nesota synod in several communities. Travel or “wandering” usually in-cludes both challenges and joyful experiences. Now as an Interim, I have “wandered” to Dassel, by God’s call, and Gethsemane’s invitation, where I’ve experienced the joy of serving Christ among you, as one of your two pastors here. Enough biography.

The haunting hymn, I Wonder as I Wander, by some anonymous person from Appalachia, still finds a place in my heart. It speaks to the mystery and wonder of Christ:

I wonder as I wander, out under the sky, How Jesus the Savior did come for to die For poor, ordinary people like you and like I. I wonder as I wander, out under the sky. I have wondered often about what Jesus’s life (and death, and

resurrection) means. One can never plumb the depths of this story, this person, the Christ! May the wonder of Christmas, God’s love and grace come down to earth, fill us with the simple virtues of faith, hope and love, awe and joy, as we travel through the days of Advent, then on to Christmas and the New Year.

My prayer for you is that wherever you and I may “wander” (to

daily work, home life, going south for the winter, to college, back to school…. Moving to a new home, a new adventure, or simply the rou-tines of life) the wonder of God’s grace which this song speaks to may lead us more deeply into the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ. In the words of the prophet, Isaiah,

“For a child has been born for us,

A son given to us; Authority rests upon his shoulders And he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9: 6-7)

Peace,

Pr. Daniel Belgum-Blad

Men’s Bible Study

Join us on Wednesday mornings, from 7:00-8:00 a.m. at Papa D’s Coffee Shop in Dassel. This is a Men’s Bible Study for discussion, and fellow-ship.

Women’s Evening Bible Study

New Study Starting January 2017

You are invited to join the Women’s Evening Bible Study. We meet the first Monday of the month from 6:45 to 8:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall and will start a new study January 3rd.

We have selected as our study “The Life You Crave: It’s All About Grace” by Michael Newman.

Do you ever wonder what your next step should be? If there is more to life? Do you crave some-thing better? More than security or wealth suc-cess or popularity, what we really need is to be loved, to matter. But with all our inner strength and the worlds create-your-own destiny attitude, with all our technology

and know-how and savvy, we are helpless to truly satisfy that craving on our own. God s intention was never for us to have a dissatis-fied, self-critical spirit. In His eyes, each of us is irreplaceable, carefully crafted, designed for a unique and noble purpose. And He is determined to reach us. Throughout the ages, amid all of the world s selfish rebellion, unthinkable corruption, ugly swirl of violence, and abject godlessness, the Lord God has shown that He works in a consistent and beautiful way. He draws close to us. He enters our existence. God reaches into our lives, turns us around, and fulfills every desperate, yearning, mis-erable need.

God offers us grace. Pure, lavish, unending grace. Discover the life you crave.

If you are interested in the study, contact Wendy Seefeldt at 320-894-5367 or [email protected]. Cost of the study book is $10.20.

Gifts should be unwrapped and delivered to church by Decem-ber 18th. More infor-mation and family “wish lists” will be posted in the church lobby in mid-November. Please contact Shari Brunes if you have any questions.

Join us for our Choir Cantata “Let the World in Every Corner Sing!”

Gethsemane congregation, friends and family are invited to a choir cantata on December 4th at both the 8:00 and 10:30 services. These services com-bine choir, instrumentalists and scripture readers for a family service titled “Let the World in Every Corner Sing!” The service will reflect on the word of God being spread through-out the world and the spirit of Christmas peace being shared with people both near and far. Familiar Christmas carols will be sung during the service by both choir and congregation. The Gethsemane church choir will be singing various anthems, three of which are “Go, Light Your World”, “Let the World Sing Gloria” and “Let There Be Peace on Earth”.

During this season of peace and goodwill we hope to bring each listener to a place of joy and praise. There’s a connection between music and our emo-tions that we don’t really understand, but the scrip-tural basis for making music is undeniable. The command to sing occurs surprisingly often, and Da-vid’s music was able to soothe Saul’s restless spirit. Refreshing and uplifting music can set the course your mind will follow. If scriptural music leaves you with a “song in your heart” throughout the day (or the evening) then you may be experiencing the joy that scripture and music, when connected, can bring to the soul.

Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Fa-ther in heaven.” Gethsemane Lutheran Church is a people of hope. Gathered by the Holy Spirit, we proclaim grace and salvation in Jesus Christ, and worship a loving God through our words and deeds in the world.”

We hope this service and this Christmas season will bring the spirit of peace, hope and goodwill to all people.

Mid-week Wednesdays of Advent you are invited to participate in the road construction God will be doing in our hearts through the Lord’s Prayer. Holden Evening Prayer will form our Worship.

When: Nov. 30, Dec. 7, 14, and 21 Worship: 6:00 p.m. Supper: 6:30 p.m.

Extra, Extra, Read all About It

Our goal is to stay accurate, and efficient in the office so when you are requesting infor-mation to be put into print or publications please submit information to the office in writing, or preferably electronically via email with the details and information of what is needed.

Thank You~ The Office

Free Pantry Project

Gethsemane will be partnering with Litchfield Area Leadership Group to provide a free “mini food pantry” for members of our communi-ty. This pantry will be placed in front of the church building and will be stocked with non-perishable food items that will be available to those in need at any time, day or night. People will be able to take what they need, as well leave donations if they can. A special thank you to Tina Schenk for being the liaison between Litchfield Area Leadership Group and Gethsemane and for volunteering to work with our GLC youth to monitor it’s use and viability of donations in order to keep the mini pantry well-stocked. Our council was honored to have this project brought to our attention, and is excited to have our congrega-tion participate in the effort to provide this wonderful service to our community!

CHANGE HAPPENS Read Isaiah 43:14-21

Peter replied, “Change your hearts and lives.”- Acts 2:38 (CEB) As a pastor who moves to a new church at the direction of my bishop, I know how difficult change can be. New faces, new names, new ideas, and learning new ways that people in-

teract together are some of the challenges in each new location. Receiving a new pastor can be an uneasy tran-

sition for congregations as well. What will the new pastor focus on? Will our mission focus need to change? Will our theological ideas differ?

As Jesus preached and taught, he called people to change their hearts, their old ways of living and thinking. Christ called those who heard his voice to

live for God and for neighbor, and not to think so much about self. We will all encounter change in our lives. We know that uneasiness, confusion, and fear are often part of that. Whether change comes in our churches, families, work, or relationships, we can know that Christ always walks with us through these changes. We are never aban-doned; we are never alone. Changes we en-counter can deepen our spiritual lives as we rely more fully on Christ. The Author ~ Jerry W. Krueger (Ohio, USA) Prayer: Holy One, walk with us as our lives change. Help us to trust you daily as you guide our steps. In Jesus’ name. Amen Prayer focus: Churches receiving a new Pastor This material is copyrighted by The Upper Room, Inc., P. O. Box

Deepening Congregational Vitality: Prayer

+Bishop Jon V. Anderson For the next month I want to lift up prayers as a faith practice focus. Congregational health and vitality begins with the spiritual lives of its people. One of God's gifts is God's promise to hear our prayers. I will be inviting people to share important prayers or compose prayers to share in the coming month on the synod's Facebook page: Southwestern Minnesota Syn-od, ELCA. (Pastor Carolyn will be sharing Bishop Jon’s daily prayer on our Facebook page: Gethsemane Luther-an Church of Dassel, but encourages you to “like” our SWMN Synod page so that if she misses one, you won’t. And if you “like” our SWMN Syn-od page, you’ll also have immediate notifi-cation of many other ministries we engage in together as synod – church together – in Jesus’ name!) painting by Robyn Sand Ander-son (Bishop Jon’s wife)

Our Hearts Send Many Thanks

The youth and families would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation for the outpouring of support of donations, and gifts that were supplied for our Silent Auction. We hope you will find some-thing that can make a difference to you, or in your gifting to others. It all comes around to a full circle of paying it forward. It takes a lot of energy and time to bring this kind of an event together. But without your generosity, and support it wouldn’t be able to happen. This will be a great support to our National Gathering Youth, as they continue together in mission and ministry on the journey. I’m excited to see the results that will be placed into national action in the summer of 2018. Houston, TX get ready we are well on our way. Blessings & Thanks, Gethsemane Youth~ National Gathering

Thought for the Day: Christ walks with me through every change.

December Sunday School News

Thank you to all of the folks who responded to our request to donate construction paper! Also, thanks for the other craft supplies that we find waiting at our door. The supply room is nicely stocked and the teachers use it often. Your generosity is greatly ap-preciated.

Christmas Program: The children of the Sunday School will be presenting their Christmas program on Sunday, December 18 at 4:00 p.m.

We appreciate the efforts to get children to Sunday School on a regular basis. We will be practicing the songs and readings each week as we prepare for the program.

We will have a Saturday morning practice on Decem-ber 17. Watch for more information to be sent home with children.

There WILL be regular Sunday School on Sunday, December 18.

There will be NO Sunday School on Sunday, December 25 or January 1.

Weather Cancellations: Should church ever be can-celed due to bad roads or weather, Sunday School will also be canceled that day. Please listen to the local radio stations for any announcements. Please make the decision that is best for your family if you question the road or weather conditions.

Time for a Change: We will be stepping down from our positions as Co-Superintendents at the end of this Sunday School year. Working with the Sunday School has been a blessing but it is time to move on to other opportunities and to give this opportunity to someone else. Please prayerfully consider wheth-er this may be a way for you to be involved with the ministry of Gethsemane. It has been a joy to get to know students and parents over the past several years. Thank you for your trust in us and for sharing your children with us each week.

Merry Christmas and Blessings to All Mary Alice and Jennifer

Milestone Ministry

The vision of Milestone Ministry is to rec-ognize and nurture faith-forming events at key moments in the life of a family. This ministry empowers parents to pass on the faith to their children and encourage faith conversations at home.

Home visits, intergenerational events, wor-ship celebrations, positive parenting pro-grams, leadership training, & adult Chris-tian education are all ways to nurture the faith lives of our families. Upcoming Schedule:

First Year Baptism Anniversary and Birthday Party

Sunday, January 8th, 2017. All children baptized at Gethsemane in the past year, and their families are invited to attend the 10:30a.m. service during which each child will receive a blessing from one of the Pas-tors. A celebration will follow the service. Families will also meet for a brief family session in the library following worship.

The Apostle’s Creed (6th Grade)

One family session: Sunday February 12, 2017, from 9:15-10:20am Worship: Chil-dren will participate during the 10:30am service that morning.

Lenten Gathering (3rd Grade)

One family session: Sunday February 26, 2017, from 9:15-10:20am Worship: Chil-dren will participate during the 10:30am service that morning.

Silent Auction Helpers Needed

We will be using this as a seed start for our National Gathering Fundraiser, for summer of 2018 to Houston, TX. We need volunteers to help with a multitude of things. To complete thank you cards to our donors, and local busi-nesses, be present to help those bidding with questions, and also to help with calling after bidding closes. If you can help with any of those things or the following time-spots below please let Paula know. Wed. evenings will be staffed with our Sr. High Youth, where we will also be using this time to discuss the differences of fundraising, service works, and mission, and how all are very different but they are all very much a part of each other.

Times where help is needed are Sundays:

Dec. 4th 8a.m.-10a.m., and 10a.m.—noon.

Dec. 11th 8a.m.–10a.m., and 10a.m.—noon.

Dec. 11th Noon-Calling winning bidders

Confirmation News:

All Confirmation Participants and adult family members please note: we will have a mid-year participants and adults meeting on Wednes-day January 4. Supper at 6:00, meeting begin-ning as soon as everyone is served. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend now. Please remember we do not have

confirmation meal or class meet-

ings on Wednesday December 28.

On October 26, our confirmation participants and many adult volunteers canvassed neighbor-hoods in Dassel for our annual “Trick or Treat for the Food Shelf.” They collected over 100 bags of donations again this year. All of those items formed the core of donations delivered to the Dassel Food Shelf “by hand” by volunteers on our GLC Food Shelf Service Sunday, Novem-ber 20. Thank you for your generosity!
