UPFRONT NEWSUPFRONT

Self-proclaimed ‘big mouth’ comedian, presenter and chef Hardeep Singh Kohli’s opinions on faith and politics can get him into hot water, but his propensity to tell quick-witted tall tales often leads to hilarity.

On the back of his new show’s premiere at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival, where Big Mouth Strikes Again received rave reviews, he’s heading Toon-wards to tell us a thing or two. The Stand, November 24, £12, thestand.co.uk

BIG MOUTH

THE DON IS BACKItalian restaurant Don Vito’s is back on Pilgrim Street with a fresh look and menu. First opened in 1976, the classic Italian

menu remains, while the interior has been brought up to date.Pilgrim Street, donvitos.co.uk

HEALTHY APPETITE

Forever Long Hair Salon is now serving healthy meals, snacks and smoothies. The menu includes health boxes and

soups while there are more smoothies than we’ve had hot dinners! Nun Street, foreverlonghair.com

URY Restaurant, formerly Rasa on Queen Street, is now open. The south Indian-inspired menu has been refreshed, as has the

decor in the Quayside restaurant.Queen Street, uryrestaurants.com

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Mantra Thai celebrated its first birthday in October with local celebs joining the party at the Forth Banks restaurant. Celebs at the

bash included Newcastle United’s Steven Tylor (pictured with owners Jeab and Sun Ye Prapunwong).Forth Banks, mantra-thai.co.uk

See Hollywood actor Bill Murray as you’ve never seen him before, thanks to a new exhibition at BALTIC.

Taking inspiration from the actor’s personality, artist Brian Griffiths creates architectural-led pieces – from a lavish LA beach house to an historic Scottish mansion - using found objects to offer a confusion of scale, size, closeness and distance. No, us either, but Bill Murray’s face is all over it, so it’s a winner. BALTIC November 20-February 28, free, balticmill.com

Newcastle’s veggies are now even more spoilt for choice with the opening of The Bohemian on Pink Lane.

The vegetarian/vegan restaurant is a haven for all things green and good for you with a menu featuring pulled jackfruit fajita, black bean and walnut cheeseburger, and sweet potato falafel salad.

There are cocktails too, plus a vinyl record shop. Pink Lane, www.iloveboho.co.uk

The unveiling of Fenwick’s Christmas-themed window marks the real start of the festive season, and if you’ve ever wondered what goes into the inspiration, decoration and set design of the iconic attraction, the Discovery Museum is ready to unwrap the secrets.

Find out what goes on behind the scenes in this new installation and step into a Christmas emporium full of festive favourites including top-selling Christmas toys from the 1930s to the present day.

Following that, nip down the road to Northumberland Street and check out this year’s window wonderland, which is on show until the new year. www.fenwick.co.uk Discovery Museum, until Jan 10, free, discoverymuseum.org.uk

IT’S A WRAP

If you didn’t get your fill of thrills and spills during Hallowe’en, one of the scariest films ever made, FW Murnau’s black and white silent classic Nosferatu starring the great Max Schrek, is on at the Castle Keep.

We can’t think of anything more terrifying than watching the sinister Count Orlok creeping around his dilapidated ancient castle from your seat within another ancient castle. Hold on tight to that box of popcorn!Castle Keep, November 15 & 29, £4, newcastlecastle.co.uk

Visual artist Rob Ryan brings his intricate ware to BALTIC this month, including his detailed paper cuts.

The artist will be on hand to discuss his work and inspirations, but if you miss out on the sold-out event, BALTIC Shop has all manner of Ryan Toon-themed merchandise, including a range specially designed in black and white. BALTIC, November 15, balticmill.com

MAKING THE CUT

No one loves a whinge more than comic Hal Cruttenden, who brings his new show Straight Out Of Cruttenden to The Stand.

Having done the rounds on telly panel shows and The Royal Variety Performance, in his new show Hal bemoans the evils of the modern world, over-sharing on social media, the hells of the 5:2 diet – y’know, the big stuff – all in his charming style. The Stand Nov 17, £15 thestand.co.uk

BEST FOR COFFEE?Cafe 21 at Fenwick. It’s lovely in there - it used to be the French Salon, you know - and I can do a bit of shopping in there too!

BEST FOR A DRINK?

Lady Grey’s on Shakespeare Street. It’s two seconds from the stage door, which is ideal after a matinee and an

evening in this dress - and those heels!

BEST FOR FOOD?If I was treating myself, as you do, I’d go for Cafe 21 or House of Tides on the Quayside. I love them both, and it’s nice to treat yourself

once in a while, isn’t it?

BEST FOR A NIGHT OUT?I love going to Boulevard. The cabaret is fab and it’s great to spend a night in a room full of bigger divas than me!

Chris stars in Theatre Royal’s Dick Whittington, Nov 24-Jan 17 theatreroyal.co.uk

Scottish comic Frankie Boyle’s new tour, Hurt Like You’ve Never Been Loved, sees him in fine, if controversial, form.

Bizarrely, the acid-tongued stand-up’s new show takes inspiration from American hip hop performer Kendrick Lamar’s new album, To Pimp A Butterfly. Lord alone knows what Boyle’s response to Lamar’s magnum opus may be, but one thing’s for certain - it’s going to be dark.Tyne Theatre & Opera House, November 19-20 £20, tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

If you’re looking for somewhere to grab a coffee and relax, check out Bunker Coffee at Campus North.

Home to fresh food and fab coffee, the menu includes breakfast options such as avocado on toast, and a range of wraps, soups and the ‘zen box’ rainbow salad mix.

Perfect for a lunchtime chat or to catch up on your email between meetings, it’s open all day - just pop in. Carliol Square, bunkercoffee.co.uk

TO BE FRANKIE BUNKER DOWN

Two ballet performances bring Tchaikovsky’s stunning scores to life this month. The Russian State Ballet performs with a live orchestra at Tyne Theatre & Opera House’s production of tragic romance Swan Lake, while at the Theatre Royal, Christmas favourite The Nutcracker will enchant and delight. Astronaut Chris Hadfield is probably as famous for his fantastic version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, performed in orbit at the International Space Station, as he is for his travels.

Plus, he’s talking about his new book, You Are Here, the sequel to An Astronomer’s Guide To Life On Earth, when he visits Life Science Centre this month.

Teaching audiences how to ‘think like an astronaut’, he’ll share tales of zero gravity, outer space exploration, and the science of space travel. Out of this world! Life Science Centre, November 15, life.org.uk

Love a book? Then Books on Tyne is for you. This is Newcastle’s annual book festival, organised by Newcastle Libraries and the fabulous Lit & Phil, and the organisers have a host of events over this year’s seven-day celebration of books, writing and ideas, including a day full of events and well-known author appearances for children and families, many of which are free. This year’s events programme is certainly

eclectic, with events celebrating books,

writing and ideas ranging from dinosaurs to

Shakespeare, poetry to crime writing.

Among the well-known names appearing

are Newcastle-born actor and novelist Emily

Woof, who is reading from and discussing

The Lightning Tree on November 23, 7pm at

the Lit & Phil (tickets £3). This is the second

novel by Woof, author of The Whole Wide

Beauty, and it weaves a compelling story

about the nature of love in all its forms.

Also at the Lit & Phil, there’s an audience

with the acclaimed actor Neil Pearson, who

- and not a lot of people know this - is an

antiquarian book dealer and collector. His

specialism is 19th and 20th Century first

edition literature, and you can see him in

conversation from 5pm November 29 (£5).

There’s also packed programme of activities

on the new family day, Nov 28, including

appearances from North East children’s

best-sellers Anne Fine and David Almond.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BOOKS ON TYNE WEIRD SCIENCE

Anarchic scientific stage show Ministry of Science rockets into Newcastle City Hall this month, with a novel approach to scientific communication.

The inventive and often explosive show takes a radical look at the inventors and engineers who have shaped the modern world. Packed with plenty of silliness among the science, the unflappable boffins build a hovercraft live on stage, mess about with a human canon and get up to all sorts of madcap experiments. An explosive night, guaranteed! City Hall, November 17, from £12.50, newcastlecityhall.org

A songwriter of exquisite skill, The Waterboys’ Mike Scott brings the group’s new line-up to Sage Gateshead.

With the release of their 11th album, the critically acclaimed Modern Blues, this year has proved they’re in no danger of slowing down, and the genre-defying group have never sounded so good. Rooted in Celtic folk with a healthy disregard for conformity, expect favourites including The Whole Of The Moon, A Girl Called Johnny and Glastonbury Song all performed in typically raucous style.Sage Gateshead, November 21, £34 sagegateshead.com

One of the biggest bands to have come out of Newcastle in the last 10 years, alt rockers Maximo Park celebrate the 10th anniversary of album A Certain Trigger in their new show.

Full of art rock gems including the propulsive Apply Some Pressure and the rifftastic Graffiti, the band will play the record in full at their sold-out City Hall show. Always a delight live, expect scissor-kicks galore from excitable front man Paul Smith.Newcastle City Hall, November 19 newcastlecityhall.org

Having released his 12th studio album Saturns Pattern earlier this year, former Jam frontman Paul Weller is on the road again, this time returning to the Toon for a huge show at Metro Radio Arena.

A reliable live act, Weller’s inimitable vocals and intricate riffs make him one of the most loved British songwriters. Expect hits including the inspirational Broken Stones, the romance of You Do Something To Me and the irresistible groove of Peacock Suit.Metro Radio Arena, November 25, £38 metroradioarena.co.uk

GOOD TASTE GOOD TASTE

FOOD GLORIOUS FOODFollowing its major revamp this summer, including design by CADA - the company behind Harrod’s and Fortnum & Mason - and a new partnership with Terry Laybourne’s 21 Hospitality Group on two new restaurants, we popped into Newcastle institution Fenwick to explore the new-look Food Hall:

KO SAIParichat Somsri-Kirby, head chef at the famed Cafe 21, has moved to Fenwick to set up Pan-Asian noodle bar Ko Sai. The menu is inspired by Thai streetfood and recipes Parichat’s mother would make on the family rice farm.

SALTWATER FISH CO.Offering fast, casual seafood dining, Saltwater Fish Co - which is led by former Broad Chare head chef Chris Eagle - features an open kitchen and a fishmonger’s counter. The menu includes the best of the day’s catch fresh from the North Sea as well as oysters, and crab sandwiches and salads.

FUEGO MEDITERRANEAN WINE BAR AND RESTAURANTInspired by the time Fenwick

executive chef Kelly Richardson spent working in the Mediterranean; Fuego’s menu is centred on tapas, with hand-stretched pizzas available too.

MASON + RYEThe new bakery-patisserie-café offers fine patisserie, artisan baking and Viennoiserie to eat in or take away.

WINE ROOMThe Wine Department has had a major revamp, bridging the gap between wine store and restaurant-style service with an Enomatic wine dispensing system – the first of its kind in the region.

DELI AND CONCESSIONSThe Deli is home to food and drinks from local producers including fresh juices, organic and non-processed food from The Naked Deli, and bespoke curry packs made to order from Rafi’s Spicebox. Big names include Ringtons, Neal’s Yard Dairy of London, and northern France-based Hennart. There is also a new confectionery department, and butchery from Blagdon Farm Shop. fenwick.co.uk
