What does Mobileye do?

Israeli-based Mobileye makes software and technology for camera-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The companys software and EyeQ chips bring real-time collision detection systems to vehicles. Its software and cameras can detect potential collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians, and interpret roadway markings, traffic signs, and traffic lights.Image source: Mobileye.

After-Market: Mobileye also sells its technology to fleet customers, new vehicle dealers, and insurance companies in its after-market segment. Revenue from this segment is much lower, and makes up just 15% of total revenue.

How Mobileye performed in the most recent quarter

Total revenue hit $70.6 million, a 104% year-over-year increase.Non-GAAP net income was $34.9 million, with diluted EPS of $0.15.$25.6 million in free cash flow.OEM revenue was $60.8 million, compared to $28.8 million in the year-ago quarter.After-market revenue improved to $9.8 million, up from $5.9 million in the year-ago quarter.

Towards the end of 2015, Mobileye launched a new autonomous emergency braking feature. The move comes as the technology is quickly becoming a standard around the world. The company also released new camera technologies to make vehicle path predictions and road interpretation more accurate.

At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, Mobileye unveiled a new autonomous driving system that uses cloud-based map data crowd-sourced from other vehicles. Its called Road Experience Management (REM) and it works with Mobileyes current technology, which will be in 270 automotive models this year.

Potential trouble spots

Mobileyes relatively small position in the growing autonomous car segment provides a lot of opportunity, but also means that bigger players could snuff out the companys self-driving prospects.
