AUGUST 2016 Like all of our Napa Valley Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, our Out of Sight Cabernet speaks of the place from which it comes. The site is just south of the Stags Leap District, and while the wine may display some of the “iron fist” characteristics of that appellation, it doesn’t have much of its storied “velvet glove.” This is the biggest, brawniest wine we make, with rich, ripe, opulent fruit to match. Over the years we’ve learned a lot about how to “tame” the grapes’ natural tannins, and yet this is a wine that is always chewy in consistency and long-lived to boot. A true Napa original. I’m often asked which Single Vineyard Cabernet is my favorite, and my answer is always the same: it depends. It depends on the season, the time of day, the meal I’m enjoying, and the people I’m enjoying it with. Our Out of Sight Cabernet is not the most elegant or feminine in our portfolio, but it packs a lot of character. Vive la difference! PREFERRED PALATES

We asked Winery Ambassador Karl Christensen about the 2013 Out of Sight Cabernet Sauvignon.

Having worked at Flora Springs for over a

year now, I've truly enjoyed pouring the Out

of Sight Cabernet for our guests, but as a

long time consumer of Flora Springs wines

(and club member!), I've enjoyed many

wonderful vintages. The 2013 is absolutely

spectacular and delivers what we all love

about big Napa Cabs!

As a Preferred Palates Club Member you may be

aware of Jon Nathaniel Wines, the very personal

wine project that John and Nat Komes started

several years ago. We asked John and Nat to tell us a

little more about the brand.

What was the impetus for creating a new wine brand?JK: We started Jon Nathaniel Wines as a way of

returning to our winemaking roots. Having founded

Napa Valley’s Flora Springs in 1978 and overseen it

ever since, we view Jon Nathaniel as a way of

recapturing the very personal way we made and

sold wines when we first started out.

NK: And because the brand is so small, we can

operate with a ”wines-without-compromise”

mentality. We can try new things, embrace

innovative techniques, and tinker with technology to

advance wine quality without a lot of risk. It’s a great

blend of tradition and experimentation.

What wines are you making under Jon Nathaniel?JK: We concentrate on a small number of varietals from

our own Napa Valley vineyards, including, right now, the

Lavender Hill Vineyard in Carneros and our Windfall

Vineyard in Rutherford. These are small parcels of land

that have been in our family for generations.

NK: The wines are personal, borne out of

farming and making wine in Napa Valley for

decades. For now they include our Lavender Hill

Chardonnay, our Windfall Merlot and Windfall

Cabernet, a Bordeaux red blend we call Fabulist,

and another red blend, Bodacious.

Tell us about the image used on the labels?NK: We call it the “vine house.” It symbolizes our

hopes for this small, family-owned brand. When

my dad started in the wine business he dreamed

of sitting on his porch in Napa Valley, pouring

wines for friends, family and customers who

came by for a taste. By staying small, we hope

to share Jon Nathaniel wines in this individual

and personal way.

Where does the name Jon Nathaniel come from?JK & NK: J(ohn)O(tto) N(at)athaniel is our

tribute to our much missed son and brother, the

late Otto Komes, who cherished being part of a

winegrowing family. The name is a constant

reminder to live with integrity and to fight for

your passions.

2013 OUT OF SIGHT CABERNET SAUVIGNON TASTING NOTES

When we found the Out of Sight Vineyard in the late

1980s, the wild, old head-pruned vines suggested years

of neglect, but today, this organically farmed vineyard

is one of our most treasured fruit sources. Sourced

from west-facing slopes, the Out of Sight Cabernet is

always dark, dense, and brawny, with plenty of aging

potential. The 2013 vintage begins with vivid aromas of

freshly-picked raspberries and blueberries followed by

layers of vanilla bean, fresh mint and sage. The densely

knit fruit core joins with earthy tones on the mid-palate,

with hints of Applewood bacon and bittersweet

chocolate emerging as the wine evolves. Finishing with

smooth tannins and an intoxicating mix of licorice and

wild berry, this wine can go the distance for another

dozen years at least.

CELLAR FACTS

Appellation: Napa Valley

Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Cases: 445

Aging: 22 months in French

and American oak barrels (63% new)

Enjoyability: Drink now or cellar. Pull the cork

until 2029 for optimum enjoyment.
