An enthralling exhibition conceived to highlight the reality of packaging waste.

28th November 2007 - 25th January 2008

Pearlfisher gallery, 50 Brook Green, London W6 7BJ

The gallery is open to the public between 9am and

6pm Monday to Friday. Entrance is free

The exhibition comprises three destructive machines, created by sculptor Nik Ramage, which will steadily demolish a display of Pearlfisher’s packaging designs amongst others. The spectacle will highlight the responsibility of the design consultancy, who recognises their part in the lifecycle of the packaging should go beyond the phase of enticing consumers to buy, and address the question of what happens to the materials once their useful life is over.

By commissioning the machines, the company hopes to bring environmental thinking to the forefront of its designers’ minds, and encourage clients to commission re-usable, recyclable

and responsible design.

“As designers, we tend to only think of our creations as they appear on shelf, looking pristine and desirable,” says Pearlfisher’s Creative Partner Jonathan Ford. “But the reality is that each design represents a mountain of waste, and we want to bring that vividly to life in a way that will inspire us to create alternatives.”

“At Pearlfisher, we’re passionate about the environment and committed to finding solutions to the landfill crisis,” continues Jonathan. “Through our Innovation Scout programme we’re

able to source pioneering structures and materials, and we approach every project with an ecological mindset. There are plenty of alternatives within our reach, so we hope this

exhibition will serve as a platform to inspire, educate and inform.”

Nik Ramage is well known for assembling absurd mechanical creations with irrational functionality. Commissioned by Pearlfisher, he has created three wrecking machines: the first has four foot cartwheels at the rear and will make its way steadily around the gallery space, crushing boxes and cartons with its weight; the second is a shopping trolley running amok that will take out packaging with a whirling wrecking bar; and the third has six sledgehammers for legs to crush and flatten anything in its path. 9

The Alliance Graphique Internationale – the AGI – was formed in 1951.Members of the organisation have, collectively, been responsible for some of the world’s best design.

Includes biographies of almost every AGI member to date, including such luminaries as Alan Fletcher, Josef Müller-Brockman, Adrian Frutiger, Milton Glaser, Stefan Sagmeister, Cassandre, Dick Bruna, Bruno Munari and Irma Boom, accompanied by example of some of their cutting edge and remarkable work.

Throughout the book there are some interesting essays from some of the most prominent AGI members covering the history of recent graphic design, and present developments.

This book is really an essential for those studying design and want to find out more about the history of their field. I would recommend buying it to every design studio as it is an excellent reference book as well as a invaluble source of inspiration.

Neubau Modul 9/10 Buy it!

Stefan GandlPages: 304Size: 24 x 28 cmFull colour, hardcover incl. DVD, Modulmeter and free font Price: £33ISBN: 978-3-89955-199-0

Last year while killing time in a Edinburgh bookshop I came across a big red book named Neubau Welt by Stefan Gandl. Filled with useful and high quality stock images, this book has sat in the 200 studio providing the occassional helping hand.

Stefan has now released a follow up book - Neubau Modul. Modul is filled with over 2,000 editable and repeatable patterns.

As with Neubau Welt, all of the work shown in this book can also be found as AI and bitmap files on an included DVD that can be used on any platform.

The DVD also contains the entire digital collection of patterns as a practical Swatch Library, enabling designers to immediately put them to use in any project in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Neubau Welt is the forerunner to Modul and is

packed full of high quality stock images covering

subjects such as transport, nature and people. A

good addition to your design toolbox.
