What is OurStage and how does it work?

First, welcome and thank you for checking us out. Simply put, OurStage is a site that brings artists and music fans together in a truly democratic environment. This is a place to discover new music. Not only is your opinion heard on OurStage, but it actually counts and has a direct effect on your favorite artists. Best of all, both artists and fans can participate for FREE. Here 's how it works:

1. Sign up for a Free Fan Account. 2. Start judging! You can build up your profile as you go and engage with other users and artists by leaving feedback and selecting favorites.

What's in it for me?

In addition to the reward of stumbling upon a new favorite band and helping them succeed, fans can win all kinds of prizes. Previous fan prizes have included gear like pro headphones, MP3 players, CDs, T-shirts, autographed pictures/posters and invites to private parties and screenings with national artists and celebs. See specific competition for details.

What's all this about a "Community?"

This is what OurStage is all about: building a relationship between fans, artists, venues and other music industry folks. None of these groups can succeed without the others. At OurStage, we feel that these relationships constitute a community of people, helping each other toward their individual goals. How is OurStage affiliated with MTV?

OurStage's partnership with MTV provides more chances for artists to get exposure on a national level. As a result of this partnership, OurStage artists have had their music selected for

MTV Network 's on-air programming, such as Parental Control, Get Hired and Skins. OurStage is always working with our partners to offer more great opportunities to our artists. Stay tuned.

GETTING STARTED

What is "My Profile?"

This is your home base from which you can keep track of your activity, make playlists, select favorites, recommended artists, share favorite links and post notes and blogs. You also have your own calendar where you can RSVP and keep track of shows you want to attend. The information blocks on the page can be moved and edited so that you can tailor the look of your page.

How does Facebook Connect work with OurStage?

When you sign up for OurStage via Facebook Connect, OurStage is able to quickly pull from Facebook the basic info required to activate your profile. This info includes name, gender, profile pic (which you can always edit), networks, user ID and any other details designated as public. Information marked private will not be used. For further instructions on how to use Facebook Connect, check out Facebook's FAQs.

How do I listen to music? Do I have to sign up?

If you just want to listen to music on OurStage, you don't need to sign up. However, in order to help artists advance in our channels and competitions by judging, you need a fan account. It 's very easy to sign up and we don 't ask for much of your information. Just the info needed to prove you are a human as well as the contact information we need in case you win a prize.

Can I download songs?

Artist tracks are available for download for .99 cents. Thanks in advance for supporting these emerging artists by purchasing their music.

We occasionally offer free promotional downloads, so keep an eye out.

How do I choose a custom URL?

Simply go to "Edit Profile" in the left navigation bar, and click on "Public Info." You will see an option below to select a vanity URL. Now you can share your OurStage profile with the ease and grace for which you are famous and beloved. Please note that a custom URL can only be selected once, so make it count.

How do I forward my OurStage messages to my personal email inbox?

Once you are logged in to your OurStage account, you should see a small box with a thumbnail of your profile image next to an arrow in the top right corner of the screen. Click the arrow and a dropdown menu will appear. Now click "Edit My Account." This will take you to your account information page. On the left side of the screen, underneath the "Contact Information: Email" field, there should be a box that reads "Forward OurStage messages to my email." Click this box to opt to have your OurStage messages forwarded to your personal email.

How do I view my OurStage inbox?

Once you are logged in to you OurStage account, you should see a small box with a thumbnail of your profile image next to an arrow in the top right corner of the screen. Click the arrow. A dropdown menu will appear. Now click "Messages" to view your messages. Alternatively, use the "Messages" link on the left side of your dashboard.

BUYING MUSIC

How do I buy music?

Buying music is a simple process on OurStage. Here are five easy steps:

1. Click on the "buy" link on the desired song's media item page or player. Look for notification indicating that the item is in your shopping cart. 2. To access your shopping cart, click the link at the top of the page. This will bring you to the shopping cart page where you can edit your items. 3. Click the "Check Out" button. You will then be directed to a PayPal window outside the OurStage site. 4. Pay directly with a credit card or pay with an existing PayPal account. Follow the on-screen instructions. 5. Once you've confirmed your payment through PayPal, your music should download to your computer (provided pop-up blockers are turned off). If you didn't receive your download(s), please contact our community team and they can assist you in getting the tracks you purchased.

What can I use to play songs back?

Songs purchased off OurStage.com can be played back in any player that supports the MP3 format. This includes iTunes, Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic or just about any other current media player.

Can I put the songs that I buy on my iPod/Zune/Rio/etc.?

Of course! You can transfer songs you've purchased to any media player that supports MP3 files. This includes the iPod, Zune, Rio and virtually every other media player on the market.

What format are the tracks available in?

The tracks are sold as MP3s and play/sound as you hear them on our site now. They are currently 128 kilobits per second bit rate files.

CHARTS

How do songs and artists make it onto the "What's Hot" list?

The "What's Hot" list is comprised of songs that have had the most success on the OurStage charts. All songs and artists listed under "What's Hot" have performed well in their respective channels during the last year.

What are the "Standings"?

The "Standings" section shows the current song rank of the particular channel you are viewing. Standings are updated every half-hour or so.

How often do the rankings change?

Depending on the intensity of the battles, the rankings can change constantly. However, it can take up to thirty-five minutes to update the rankings. So keep coming back to check, and keep judging the content fairly.

Why isn 't the best stuff at the top of the charts?

The simple answer is that not everyone shares your opinion of what is good. Taste, for better or worse, is relative. If you don 't like what 's at the top, keep judging. Get others who share your tastes to judge, too, if you like.

How are "Standings" different from "Top Tracks" on the charts page?

The "Top Tracks" section is a weekly snapshot of the "Standings." Every Sunday morning, we take a look at the current standings and post the results as the "Top Tracks" for a week. You can view past weeks by using the drop down menu on the right side of the "Top Tracks" page.

Why am I only able to see the "Top 100?"

We limit our channel views to the Top 100 for a few reasons:

* For new users, the channel pages are a way to find the best music on OurStage. * For older users, placement in the Top 100 now becomes a bigger mark of distinction Think of it like charting on the Billboard Charts or another similar recording chart. By being in the Top 100 you gain more exposure (and real bragging rights) than in the past because you are now one out of a hundred, instead of one out of many hundreds. * Many artists don't want low rankings shown on their profiles because they feel like this makes them look bad, which is not fair, especially when you're new. Artists are uncomfortable inviting their friends and fans to join OurStage when their song was ranked 400th in a channel of 900 items.

What is the Best Of The Best?

The Best Of The Best charts show the Top 100 artists on OurStage in pop, rock, urban and country. Charts are generated four times a month and reflect the best artists over a six month period. Charts are published up to forty-eight hours after the 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd of each month.

The Best Of The Best chart rankings are determined by a number of factors. The specific algorithm may change from chart to chart but basic factors include:

* Competition results over a six month period in channels assigned to the appropriate genre. * External information gathered from band URLs listed on their individual profile page. * General user preferences and behavior.

CHANNEL INFORMATION AND DEFINITIONS

What is a music channel?

A music channel is the place where artists ' songs compete against other songs of the same genre. Each music channel is classified according to genre (For example, pop, rock, country, hip hop and so forth). Artists can enter one song per channel per month, with a total of three songs in channel competitions in a given month. Competitions with our promotional partners do NOT count against this limit. If an artist enters a song into a promotional channel, they can also enter the same song into another non-promotional channel. This exception also applies to our Premium Channels.

How are the channels defined?

Genre is subject to interpretation, of course, but here are the general guidelines you should use when considering genre appropriateness. Artists might be resistant to categorizing their music, and we at OurStage don 't want to restrict the creative process, but in order to maintain fairness and consistency in our competitions, we need to set some boundaries. We also realize that some songs may fit multiple genres.

Here is an overview:

AcousticThe featured or dominant instrumentation must be acoustic. There is leeway (electric keyboards and electric bass, for instance, are allowed). Just think "MTV Unplugged." If your song is acoustically-based, but is country-influenced, it might fit better in the country channel. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Examples: Nick Drake, James Taylor, John Prine, Bert Jansch, Ani DiFranco, Connor Oberst

All InstrumentalThis channel hosts variety of music that does not feature vocals. While these songs can span many genres, note that Electronica has its own channel.

Examples: Itzhak Perlman, John Williams, Rodrigo y Gabriela, George Gershwin

Alternative (Rock)This channel is difficult to define, and so we at OurStage allow for some flexibility. But the genre is so-named because it is historically an alternative to the mainstream. If you could imagine your music on mainstream pop or Top 40 radio, it is likely NOT alternative and would probably fit better in another channel. Grunge, noise-rock, math-rock, shoegaze...these are all welcome here. Distorted guitar is a common feature, but please note that Punk has its own channel, as does Metal. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Examples: Spacemen 3, Battles, Shellac, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, The White Stripes

Alternative CountryAmericana, roots-rock, rockabilly, country-rock, and other hybrid genres like cowpunk...these are all acceptable in this channel. Any country-influenced music that is markedly different from the slick productions of modern mainstream country is appropriate for Alternative Country. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Examples: Gram Parsons, Drive-By Truckers, Old 97's, Uncle Tupelo

Alternative Hip-HopThis channel is for music that shares the basics of hip-hop and rap, but is non-traditional and thus not in line with our Hip-Hop and Rap Channels. By and large, the Alternative Hip-Hop Channel is for hip-hop fusions with other genres of music such as jazz, country or rock where the instrumental plays a more prominent part than traditionally heard in hip-hop or rap. In addition, alternative hip-hop songs often touch upon more socially conscious themes in comparison to rap or hip-hop. Depending on the degree of hip-hop influences in a song, it might not be the best fit for the Alternative Hip-Hop Channel, unless it features a fair amount of rapping. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Examples: Atmostphere, Cribs, The Roots, Kid Cudi

Alternative MetalAlternative Metal came about as a backlash to the glam / hair metal of the 1980s, going back to the stripped-down ethos of punk and giving it a harder, stylized edge. It is heavily guitar-based, like metal, but tends to have more of a melodic sensibility and experiments with different sounds and textures. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Examples: Jane's Addiction, Faith No More, Tool, Helmet, System of a Down

Ambient/ChillAmbient/chill music is a sub-genre of electronic music that focuses largely on the timbrel characteristics of sounds, often organized or performed to evoke an atmospheric or unobtrusive quality. The key element to this sub-genre is relaxation. Upbeat, aggressive, or other forms of Electronic music should be entered in the Electronica Channel, including club music or what is sometimes referred to ambient techno. Non-electronic tracks do not belong in the Ambient/Chill Channel. Vocals are optional but, if included, must be sung in English.

Examples: Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, Enigma

BluesBlues music usually adheres to a fairly standard musical progression, though production style can vary widely - from solo acoustic guitar and vocal to full-band electric instrumentation. This channel allows for all styles of blues music (Delta blues, Chicago blues, Memphis blues, etc.). If your song features a strong vocal melody sung over a hip-hop style backbeat, it is a better fit for the R&B Channel. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Examples: B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, Stevie Ray Vaughn

ChristianChristian music is written to express either a personal or communal belief regarding Christian life and faith. The musical form can vary, but if the lyrical theme is centered on praise or worship of the Christian God, it should be submitted to this channel. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Examples: Amy Grant, Cece Winans, Chris Tomlin, Jars of Clay

Country

This is the best channel for any modern country that is or aspires to be mainstream, with professional, high-fidelity production of the kind heard on modern country radio or CMT. Typically, Country features rich lyrical content, with an emphasis on storytelling. Prominent instruments are often acoustic guitar, banjo, steel guitar, electric guitar and fiddle. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Examples: Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, Big and Rich

Country VideoThis should be a video to accompany the music that fits the parameters of the Country channel (see above). This should not be a live or home performance video. Slideshows and manipulated stock footage are not acceptable. Cover songs are not allowed in any of the video channels. Also, marketing videos designed to promote a product such as a CD, movie, etc., are not appropriate for the Video channels and are a violation of our terms and conditions. Vocals are required and lyrics must be in English.

Cover BandsThis is the channel for all remakes of songs pre-recorded by other artists. All genres are welcome in the Covers channel.

ElectronicaAll kinds of electronic music are welcome here, from techno to house to electro-pop. Entries may contain some non-electronic elements, but the dominant features must be electronic. Vocals are optional but, if included, must be sung in English.

Examples: Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim

FolkFolk music is faithful to a long tradition that has not strayed too far from its roots. It is focused on lyrics, usually supported by a blend of acoustic and country sounds. Bluegrass is welcome in this channel. Again, vocals are a must and must be sung in English. If your music has no lyrics, it might be better in the All Instrumental channel. If your song lyrics do not contain a strong storytelling or socially-conscious element, you may want to submit your song to the Singer-Songwriter or Acoustic Channels. If your song features mostly electric instruments and synthesized sounds, it is most likely not suitable for the Folk Channel.

Examples: Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, J. Tillman, Avett Brothers, Gillian Welch, Iron & Wine

FunkFunk is a blend of soul, jazz, and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable form. Melody is de-emphasized in favor of a rhythm and groove, and so bass and drums are prominent. The songs often eschew traditional song structure, and instead vamp on an extended groove. However, vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Parliament-Funkadelic, Rick James, Sly and the Family Stone

GospelGospel is spiritual in nature and characterized by dominant vocals, often choirs, singing lyrics based on scripture. This is a specific categorization of Christian music, but based more in a soul tradition. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Yolanda Adams, Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin, Staples Singers

Hard RockLess extreme than Metal, but heavier than Mainstream Rock, Hard Rock usually features chunky and distorted guitar and forceful, melodic lead vocals. The tempo of Hard Rock is usually slower than Metal, as well. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: AC/DC, Breaking Benjamin, Wolfmother, 10 Years, Audioslave, Chevelle

Hard Rock VideoThis should be a video to accompany the music that fits the parameters of the Hard Rock channel (see above). This should not be a live or home performance video. Slideshows and manipulated stock footage are not acceptable. Cover songs are not allowed in any of the video channels. Also, marketing videos designed to promote a product such as a CD, movie, etc., are not appropriate for the Video channels and are a violation of our terms and conditions. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Hip-HopThe Hip-Hop Channel is for music that closely resembles Rap, but is less lyric-centric and often features more danceable rhythms and melodic choruses or vocal lines. Hip-hop music is also more club friendly than Rap or Alternative Hip-Hop. If your song features mostly melodic vocal lines as opposed to rapping, it is likely more fitting for the R&B Channel. Must include vocals.

Examples: Kanye West, Soulja Boy, Lupe Fiasco, Lil' Wayne, Wale

Hip-Hop VideoThis should be a video to accompany the music that fits the parameters of the Hip-Hop channel (see above). This should not be a live or home performance video. Slideshows and manipulated stock footage are not acceptable. Cover songs are not allowed in any of the video channels. Also, marketing videos designed to promote a product such as a CD, movie, etc., are not appropriate for the Video channels and are a violation of our terms and conditions. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Indie PopIndie Pop is the lighter, more upbeat offshoot of Indie Rock. Sometimes called twee pop, it is heavily influenced by the sound of 1960s pop music and often features harmonies and jangly guitar. Indie Pop usually features more lo-fi production than mainstream or Top 40 pop. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Tilly and The Wall, The Apples In Stereo, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Dressy Bessy, Papas Fritas.

Indie RockLike Rock and Alternative, Indie Rock is guitar-based, but it has a more lo-fi aesthetic than either of those. Guitar sounds are often distorted, and singers sometimes incorporate unusual vocal styles. Indie rock often explores arrangements, instrumentation and lyrical subject matter not usually seen in mainstream/commercial rock music. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., The Pixies, The Walkmen

JazzThis is another very difficult genre to pin down, so we accept many styles into the Jazz channel: swing, dixieland, fusion, latin, bebop, big band, contemporary, smooth jazz, modal jazz, free jazz, etc. Regardless of the sub-genre, we are looking for improvisational features over jazz-oriented chord progressions (chords expanding beyond the traditional 1-3-5 triad). If you're in a 40s-era big band with or without a vocalist (regardless of improvisation) you are also welcome in this channel. Jazz standards are also suitable for this channel; however, appropriate credit MUST be given to the composer in the Item Description Field. If your material sounds similar to jam bands like Phish or The Grateful Dead, your music is better suited for the Funk Channel or one of the other Rock Channels. If your music is predominantly instrumental with no vocals and no improvisation, your music is best suited for the All Instrumental Channel. Vocals are optional but, if included, must be sung in English.

Examples: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Ella Fitzgerald, Freddie Hubbard

Tr3s Latin MusicLatin refers to many varieties of Latin music: Latin pop, Reggaeton, Latin jazz, Rock en Espaol, and all types of more traditional Latin music such as Samba, Bachata, Merengue, etc. Vocals are required in this channel and are typically in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Other languages are acceptable provided that the musical component fits accurately into the Latin genre.

Examples: Shakira, Alejandro Sanz, Ricky Martin

MetalThis channel is home to the more extreme hard rock music. Key features that distinguish a metal song form a hard rock song are faster tempos, more aggressive vocals and more intense drum parts. There are many subgenres of metal and hardcore music, all of which belong here. This includes metalcore, power metal, death metal, black metal, hardcore, doom metal, thrash metal, grindcore, heavy metal, etc. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Metallica, Carcass, Stratovarius, Converge, Death, Necrophagist

Modern RockModern rock features high-production value with prominent and professional-sounding vocals, and often featuring modernized instrumentation (synthesizers, etc.). Emo and pop-punk fall under this genre. If your song features standard rock instrumentation, production and time signatures or has a classic rock sound, it may be a better fit for the Rock Channel. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Killers, Muse, Fallout Boy, Green Day

PopStyles of Pop vary, but songs in this channel should be akin to what you'd hear on Top 40 radio, with an emphasis on the lead vocal and an adherence to the standard verse-chorus-verse song structure. Pop rock and dance pop are both accepted here. Rapping should not be prominent on these songs - look to the Hip-Hop or Rap channels for this. Club, dance, and techno would be better in the Electronica channel. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Maroon 5, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne

Pop VideoThis should be a video to accompany the music that fits the parameters of the Pop channel (see above). This should not be a live or home performance video. Slideshows and manipulated stock footage are not acceptable. Cover songs are not allowed in any of the video channels. Also, marketing videos designed to promote a product such as a CD, movie, etc., are not appropriate for the Video channels and are a violation of our terms and conditions. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Pro Performance VideoThis should be a video of one full song performed LIVE and IN CONCERT. This means in front of an audience. It should not be a home or rehearsal video and should be of better quality than typical cell phone video. Flip cam or personal video camera quality is okay, but the audio should be clear with no distortion. Cover songs are not allowed. If your video does not meet these standards, it will be removed. Vocals are optional but, if included, should be sung in English.

PunkPunk music was born from a frustration with the extravagance of 70s arena rock. Punk is meant to be the antithesis of this extravagance. Songs are short and feature loud, overdriven guitar. Vocal styles are less refined than traditional rock, often with yelling or shouting. Punk songs sometimes have political or socially-conscious lyrics. The Punk Channel also includes punk offshoots like hardcore punk and emo punk as well as hybrids like ska-punk, folk punk, and psychobilly. Songs in the Punk Channel are usually faster and more aggressive than those in the Rock or Hard Rock Channels but less technical musically with not as much growling and screaming as songs in the Metal Channel. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: The Ramones, NOFX, X, The Sex Pistols, Blag Flag, The Clash, The Damned, Rancid

R&BWhile R&B historically stands for rhythm and blues, the definition applied to our R&B Channel is more contemporary. Modern R&B is much more similar to pop music than to traditional rhythm and blues. The focus is on the vocals, which usually feature a strong melody. R&B vocals encompass many aspects of classic soul music, like ornate vocal embellishments and spontaneous improvisation. The instrumental accompaniment features a strong backbeat, often similar to hip-hop beats regardless of the tempo. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Alicia Keys, Usher, R. Kelly

RapThe Rap Channel is the most lyrical-centric music of the urban genres, and does not primarily feature danceable rhythms or melodic choruses. The subject matter is typically darker with grittier themes than entries in the Hip-Hop Channel. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Eminem, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, NWA, Mos Def

Rock

Rock is a broad genre, but we mean it here to include the classic form that would not otherwise be classified in a sub-genre like Alternative or Indie Rock. It is mainstream and usually draws heavily from the kind of music heard on classic rock radio. Songs in this channel should feature at least vocals, guitar, bass, and drums with a strong backbeat. Consider whether your song might be more appropriate in a more specific channel (i.e. Hard Rock or Metal) before entering it here. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters

Rock VideoThis should be a video to accompany the music that fits the parameters of any style of rock music. This should not be a live or home performance video. Slideshows and manipulated stock footage are not acceptable. Cover songs are not allowed in any of the video channels. Also, marketing videos designed to promote a product such as a CD, movie, etc., are not appropriate for the Video channels and are a violation of our terms and conditions. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Singer-SongwriterSinger-songwriters are musicians who perform and write their own music. The singer's voice is the focus and instrumental accompaniment is often very minimal. The lyrical content is original and authored by the singer who is primarily responsible for the vocals in the piece. Full bands, with complex arrangements where the backing music is as much the focus as the vocals are best suited for other channels like rock or soft rock. There are separate channels for male and female Singer-Songwriters. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Paul Simon, Jack Johnson, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Carol King

Soft RockOften defined as "Adult Contemporary," this genre is far less aggressive than typical Rock and should include melodic vocals. Piano and acoustic guitar are often primary instruments. Soft rock might sound like full-band versions of Singer-Songwriter material. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Sarah MacLachlan, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Michael McDonald

SoulFor our purposes, we make a distinction between Soul and R&B to allow for these two styles (classic and modern) to remain separate. The Soul Channel features music that closely adheres to the historical definition of rhythm and blues. Soul is often a fusion of funk and gospel music, though in order to be considered soul (and not funk) the vocals, not the backing tracks, must be the focus of the song. The instrumental accompaniment is based around a chord progression. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English. Vocals in the Soul Channel often include ornate vocal embellishments and spontaneous improvisation.

Examples: Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Al Green

Southern RockSouthern Rock shares much the same style as Rock (vocals, guitar, bass, and drums with a strong backbeat), but with a twang, incorporating country and blues to a large degree. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

Examples: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kid Rock, Allman Brothers, The Black Crowes

Traditional CountryTraditional Country is old-school country, featuring classic instrumentation like steel guitar, banjo, fiddle, and mandolin. The instrumentation, however, is usually sparse and takes a backseat to the lead vocal. This genre has the same rich lyrical content as Country and Alternative Country, with an even heavier emphasis on storytelling. Traditional country has clear bluegrass or honky-tonk influences and little-to-no rock and roll influence. Vocals are required and lyrics must be sung in English.

WorldThe World Channel is a crossroads of all different types of genres. Most importantly, submissions should be culturally specific and outside the realm of Western music. Vocals are optional, and language is not a criterion: artists entered in the World Channel may sing songs in English and reside within the US. Artists whose music fits easily into traditionally Western genres of music like rock, pop, country or hip hop should enter their songs in the appropriate genre channel. Reggae music is allowed in the World Channel, however Reggaeton is best suited for one of OurStage's Hip Hop Channels due to its focus on rapping. New Age music is also allowed in the World Channel.

Holiday SongAll holiday-spirited music in any genre is allowed in this competition. Songs can either be original or in the Public Domain. Please note that covers are allowed in this competition but sampling is not. If your song is a cover of previously recorded material and is NOT in the Public Domain, you must have permission from the copyright holder or own the copyright. If an Artist enters a traditional or cover song for this Channel, appropriate credit MUST be given in the Item Description area or it may be considered Copyright violation and withdrawn. Copyrighted images/album art may NOT be used accompanying any entries and will cause entries to be withdrawn.

JUDGING AND COMPETITIONS

How do the competitions work?

There are two main types of competition: Channel competitions and promotional competitions with our partners. The channel competitions take place on a monthly basis.

All monthly competitions include three rounds: Regular judging, Semifinals and Finals.

In regular judging sessions, all items in the channels (all sub-genres) battle for chart placement. This phase takes place from the first of the month until six days before the month ends. During semifinals, the Top 40 entries in each channel battle amongst themselves over a four-day period. For the finals, the last two days of each month, the Top 20 in each channel are rolled into one of five music finals channels (main genres: Rock, Pop, Country, Urban, Specialty) or the two video finals channels. The final round decides the seven Grand Prize winners across these finals channels.

What are the different finals channels?

OurStage has five different music finals channels and one video finals channels: Rock, Pop, Country, Urban, Specialty, and Video. These channels include the following sub-genres:

What are the different kinds of "battles?"

Battles are where two or more songs are selected, according to our unique fair judging algorithm, to go up against each other and be rated by our users. There are two kinds of battles:

Head-to-Head:

Two songs pitted against each other for the love of a good fan.

To judge head-to-head battles, follow these five easy steps:

1. Click on the word "Judge" in our navigation bar. 2. Pick the stage and channel you want to judge. We have a Music and Music Video stage, each with different channels. You can pick one of our monthly channel competitions (such as Rock, Hip Hop, Country...) or select a special promotional channel where artists are competing for specific and unique prizes. 3. Review two items, chosen by our advanced software that guarantees every artist receives an equal number of views throughout the month-long competition. (If you see four songs at the bottom, you 're in Sort4 view (see below) and can hit the red button on the right that says "Switch To Head-to-Head Judging.") Listen to or watch both items for at least fifteen seconds (if one item reappears in multiple battles, you don 't have to listen to it again). Then decide which one you like better and by how much. Your ranking is registered along with all the other battles and is used to compile our near real-time charting. 4. Repeat Step 3 or go back to Step 2 and select a new channel. 5. Set an alarm clock to remind you to stop and eat. Judging can be habit-forming.

Sort4:The Thunderdome of music judging. Four songs enter, but only one can emerge victorious.

To judge Sort4 battles, follow these easy steps:

1. Click "Judge" in the navigation bar. 2. Pick the stage and channel you want to judge.

3. You should see a player with four songs below it then to the right you will see a chart with four slots for you to rank in. If you don't see the chart, click the red "Switch To Sort4 Judging" button on the right (note: Sort4 is unavailable during Semifinals and Finals). 4. Once you're there, the first song will automatically play. Listen to at least fifteen seconds of the song and then drag it into the ranking chart. Repeat with each of the other three songs. Arrange the songs in the order of what you liked most to least. 5. Click "Lock In Vote" at the bottom of that chart. You can listen as many times as you like before making your final choices. Another Sort4 will appear. 6. Refrain from going mad with your newfound power.

Why can't I judge for one particular band?

This would defeat the purpose of fair judging. If you could choose what to judge, artists could sit there all day and judge for themselves, unfairly influencing the charts and making music discovery no fun at all. We want our charts to reflect the collective wisdom of our entire community. This is what makes OurStage so unique and free from all the self-promoting noise that makes other sites a drag to visit. We know that it asks a bit more of our community to do things this way, but we are certain that the results are worth it, and we are grateful for your participation. BUT, if you came here for a certain artist, and you make them your "favorite" artist, they are guaranteed to come up within the first twenty battles. Remember that you need to listen to each song for fifteen seconds in order for your battle to count.

Why am I limited in the number of battles I can do in semifinals and finals?

There are only so many items to judge in a competition. We limit artists to one set of battles in each of the final stages of the month in order to prevent people from trying to cheat their way to the Number 1 spot by unfairly participating in thousands of battles. You will be able to complete different amounts of battles in the Finals Channels, because there are a different number of items to be judged. This system guarantees that every item in a channel receives equal exposure with the same number of chances to be judged favorably as every other entry.

Keep in mind OurStage does not limit how many battles you can participate in or how long you judge for during the regular judging session. In the interest of keeping this competition fair to all artists and fans, however, we decided to set a limit during the finals.

Don 't the artists just try to rank everyone else poorly?

There are more fans judging on the site than there are artists making music, but imagine if it were the other way around. Luckily, our computers are really smart. Artists can't game the system by voting down opponents. We hope and encourage everyone to be honest. But for those who choose to counter the counter-culture of OurStage, you are statistically irrelevant to our system. Enough said.

Do I get anything for judging?

Honest and active judges, as well as users who turn out to be good at predicting winners, are rewarded with a shiny "Badge" of honor icon that follows them wherever they go on the site for a full calendar month. That way, artists and fans alike will see that they are heroes of the OurStage community. Exceptional judging will be recognized and forever etched in your Achievement block on your profile page. In addition, judging in various competitions makes you

eligible for various sweepstakes prizes. These are listed specifically with the rules of each competition.

What is honest judging?

At OurStage, an honest judge is someone who takes judging seriously, who listens/watches every song or video they review closely and who makes their final decisions carefully. An honest judge also bases their choices for the battle at hand in the moment, regardless of current position in competition, because it's all about the music. And they never rate in a malicious way because, well, that wouldn't be honest, would it?

Any user who honestly judges a fair number of battles within the Fan Prize sponsored competition is eligible to win a prize. These prizes are quite varied, depending on the competition, and may include musical equipment, headphones, MP3 players, trips to premiers, t-shirts, posters, autographed merch and more. The prizes are awarded to the users whose honest judging cast over the judging session best predicts the final channel results. The selection of winners is subject to additional prerequisites (i.e. age or location) and requirements set by the prize sponsor specified in the "Rules" section of the Fan Prize.

Winners will be contacted by OurStage within six to eight weeks after the close of our monthly competition.

FLAGGING ITEMS FOR REVIEW

OurStage is a big site with a lot of media items on it, so it 's difficult to make sure everything is running smoothly all the time. We appreciate the input of our users when they come across an item of concern. Please use the following three categories when flagging media on OurStage: Copyright Violations, Offensive and Off-topic.

Copyright Violation: Use this flag to alert OurStage of a media item that violates another artist's copyright. This can include sampling, repurposed images, uploading material not owned by that user, etc. (To learn more about Copyright law in the United States, please feel free to check out the US Copyright Office's FAQs.)

Offensive: This flag is for materials which users might find offensive due to language and/or graphic sexual or violent content. Please take into account the context in which an item is placed, as there may be slightly different standards for music that is placed in different channels.

Off-Topic: Use this flag for materials that are entered into the wrong channel or category on OurStage (i.e. a metal song posted in the Folk Channel). When something like this happens, please flag the item and let us know which channel the item should be in.

All flagged items will be reviewed so that the appropriate action is taken. Users are always notified when their media is moved, removed, or, in extreme circumstances, their account suspended or banned. Be aware that no immediate action will take place until we've had a chance to review the item in question.

EVENTS: FANS

What do the different colors on an artist 's event calendar mean?

When viewing an artist's event calendar on their OurStage profile, events posted by the artist will appear in blue. Events to which you have submitted an RSVP will appear in green.

How do I RSVP to an event?

To RSVP to an event on an artist's OurStage calendar, click on or scroll over the event and hit the "RSVP to Event" button. To RSVP to an event from an artist's "Overview" tab or media item page, click on the "RSVP to Event" button to the left of the event information. Only the user who posted the event will be able to see the RSVP count.

How do I share an event?

To share an event, click on the event title. This will take you to the event's page. You will see icons for Twitter and Facebook. Click on the icon of the social-networking site you wish to share the event on and follow their instructions. You can also share an event via email by copying the event page URL and pasting it into an email.

How do I add an event to my shows?

Events are automatically added to your shows when you RSVP.

How do I view events near me?

To view events near you by genre, first log in to your OurStage account. Then, select the genre of music you are interested in by selecting one of OurStage's music channels.

You can select the channel of your choice by clicking the "Music" button in the main navigation bar at the top of the page then selecting one of the channels from the dropdown menu. To generate a list and map of events near you, you can click either the "Hot Artists and Shows Near Me" link at the top of the page or click the "Near Me" link in the "Hot Shows" box on the left side of the page.

Why does my "Events Near Me" page sometimes show events that aren't near me?

Generating an "Events Near Me" page will show you the events that are closest to you. If there aren't a lot of events in a specific genre in your area, the results will show you events outside your immediate area.

What is Classifieds?

Classifieds is a place where artists, industry professionals and fans can connect and fulfill all of their music-related needs. Think of it as your local classifieds section but on a music-centric site with over 4 million monthly visitors.

Who can use Classifieds?

Artists, industry professionals and fans - anyone who is a member of the OurStage community - can use Classifieds.

What do I have to do in order to use Classifieds?

To use Classifieds, all you have to do is become a member of the OurStage community. Join OurStage and create your OurStage profile. Then, click on "Classifieds" to browse or post your own listing.

What can I post to Classifieds?

You can post anything, as long as it relates to music, fits into one of our many Classifieds categories, and abides by the OurStage Terms and Conditions. Find a band mate, photographer, new equipment, tour support, cool events in your area and more. If there are any additional categories you think we should incorporate into Classifieds, please contact us at marketplace@ourstage.com.

Why was my listing removed from Classifieds?

If your listing was removed from the OurStage Classifieds, then the post was deemed unsuitable according to the rules stated in the above FAQs.

How do I post a listing in Classifieds?

Once you are logged into your OurStage account, click on "Classifieds" in the main navigation bar. You should see an "Add Listing" option under the "Actions" menu. Click here and select the appropriate category and subcategory headings for your listing. Enter your location and the details about your listing in the appropriate fields.

How much does it cost to post a listing in Classifieds?

Posting a listing in Classifieds will be free for a limited time.

How do I edit my listing?

Once you are logged into you OurStage account, click on "Classifieds" in the main navigation bar. Click the "My Listings" button in the top right corner of the screen. You should see a list of all of your current Classifieds posts. Click on the title of the listing you want to edit. This will take you to your listing. Click on the "Edit Listing" button in the right corner of the screen and make the necessary edits.

Can I remove my listing from Classifieds before the expiration date? How?

You can remove listings from Classifieds at any time. To remove your listing, log in to your OurStage account then click on "Classifieds" in the main navigation bar. Click the "My Listings" button in the top right corner of the screen. You should see a list of all of you current Classifieds posts. Click on the title of the listing you want to edit. This will take you to your post. Click on the "Remove Listing" button in the right corner of the screen.

How do I add a picture to my listing?

When you create your listing, you will see a button labeled "Choose file" located at the bottom of the listing template. Click that button to browse through the photos on your computer. Select the photo you want to use.

Can I post my listing in more than one category or location?

You may post your listing in more than one Classifieds category or location if your listing is relevant to more than one Classifieds category or location. If you post a listing in a Classifieds category or location that it does not belong in, your listing will be removed. If you re-post your listing in a category less than a week after the listing's original post, your listing will be removed.

How do I respond to a listing?

When you view a listing, you should see a "Respond To Seller" button in the right corner of the post. Click this button if you want to respond. A response field will appear below the listing. Once you have typed in your message, click the "Respond" button beneath the response box. The poster of the listing will receive a message in their OurStage inbox. They will also be able to see your response when they are viewing the listing that you have responded to. Only you and the sender will be able to see this chain of communication.

How will I know when someone responds to my listing?

When someone responds your Classifieds listing, you will receive a message in your OurStage inbox. When you post a listing to Classifieds, remember to check your OurStage inbox frequently, and keep in mind all OurStage users have the option of having their OurStage messages forwarded to their personal email. You can view the response by logging in to your OurStage account, clicking on "Classifieds" in the main navigation bar at the top of the page and clicking on the "My Listings" button in the top right corner of the Classifieds listing page. A

"[number] Messages" notice will appear next to any listing that has responses. To view responses for a listing, click on the listing's title.

How do I review the responses to my listing?

Once you are logged in to your OurStage account, click on "Marketplace" in the main navigation bar. Select "Classifieds" in the drop down menu. Click on the "My Listings" button in the top right of the Classifieds main page. Select the title of the listing that you want to view responses for. Any responses you have will appear in the "Listing Responses" grid. All listings can be sorted by the column headers within the "Listing Responses" grid.

I found an offensive/prohibited listing. What should I do?

If you find a listing that is offensive/prohibited in Classifieds, please flag it. This will direct the OurStage staff to the listing so that they can take any necessary actions. To flag a listing, click on the listing title, and then click the "Flag Listing" button in the right hand corner. Select "Prohibited" from the dropdown menu as the reasons for your flag. Next, use the "Please tell us why this listing should be removed from OurStage" text field to explain why you think this listing is offensive/prohibited. When you are finished, click the "Submit" button to send in your flag.

I found a spammed/over-posted listing. What should I do?

If you find a listing that you recognize as spam or a listing that has been over-posted in Classifieds, please flag it. This will direct the OurStage staff to the listing so that they can take any necessary actions. To flag a listing, click on the listing title, and then click the "Flag Listing" button in the right hand corner. Select "Spam/Over Post" from the dropdown menu as the reason for your flag. Next, use the "Please tell us why this listing should be removed from OurStage" text field to explain why you think this listing is spam/over posted. When you are finished, click the "Submit" button to send in your flag.

Who is responsible for monetary transactions in Classifieds?

OurStage Classifieds provides a platform for users to interact with each other. OurStage does not process any monetary transactions between Classifieds users nor is OurStage responsible for any monetary transactions between Classifieds users. Any monetary transactions with regards to listings in Classifieds are between the user providing the good or service and the user receiving the good or service. If you think a user is abusing Classifieds and not abiding by Classifieds guidelines and/or the OurStage Terms and Conditions, please contact marketplace@ourstage.com.

TECHNICAL ISSUES

System Requirements for OurStage.com

OurStage.com uses the latest in Internet web-browsing technology. As a result, we need our viewers to have Adobe Flash 8 installed thoughVersion 9 is preferred. If you aren't sure whether or not you have Flash installed, or if think your version is out-dated, you can check by going to Adobe's Flash site.

We also highly recommend using Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox for Windows operating systems, and Safari, Firefox or Chrome for Mac. AOL's built in browser will not display all of the

images on our site correctly, so AOL users should consider using one of the previously recommended browsers. Additionally, we suggest using a broadband Internet connection to view OurStage.com due to the speed requirements necessary for streaming video and audio.

With the addition of the banner players, among other changes, OurStage no longer provides support for Internet Explorer 6. If you are using Internet Explorer 6 you will experience severe compatibility issues, ones that cannot be resolved without upgrading your browser to a newer version of Internet Explorer or switching to another browser we are compatible with.

Why does OurStage want my email address or ZIP code?

OurStage uses your email address to confirm that you are a legitimate user and that your email address is valid. We also ask for your zip code so that we can target our site's content. That is, we use your zip code to present items that may be of a higher interest to you. If, for some reason, you are uncomfortable giving out your zip code, you may leave the field blank.

I didn't get my registration email/I was not able to register.

To complete the registration process and activate your OurStage account, you will need to click the activation link provided in your email confirmation.

If you entered the correct email address but did not receive the confirmation email within a few minutes, it is likely that your mail client or Internet Service Provider (ISP) is filtering the message as spam. Check your spam or junk mail folder for the message. If you don't find the message in the junk mail folder, please email our support team and they will activate your account for you.

When I click on a song, it doesn't start playing. Why not?

Users need Flash installed on their computers. Click here to find out more about the software requirements for OurStage. If you do have Flash and are still unable to play the media on our site, drop us a line.

When I click on a link to learn more about something, I get a white page.

If you are trying to access instructional files on how to add a banner or an OurStage media player to another site, or are looking for information about prizes, and cannot view the files, then you need to download a free PDF file reader. These files are available in the standard PDF format used by many applications, including Adobe Acrobat Reader. Mac OS X comes with a built in program called Preview. You can also use Adobe Acrobat Reader or another application if you prefer.

TROUBLESHOOTING

I deleted a message thread but it has reappeared. Why?

OurStage "Messages" are different from traditional email. You can delete an exchange or conversation from your view, but if the other person in the exchange replies to the thread, it will reappear in "MyMessages."

I signed up for the wrong type of account.

If you sign up for the wrong type of account (i.e. fan that signed up for an artist account), then you will need to create a new account under the correct type. Please be aware that you cannot use the same e-mail for multiple accounts, so you will need to switch that before making your new account. Once you've made the new account, please contact community and they can deactivate the extra account.

I've been an OurStage user for a while, but something is different here. What gives?

Here at OurStage, we like to continually strive to be better by improving the user experience whenever we can. This means that there will often be tweaks, changes, bug fixes, etc. We hope that all of these changes are for the better, and that all of our users embrace these changes (though we know there will always be people resistant to change and that changes often take time to get used to).

Many of these changes have, and will, go unannounced. Some changes, such as major design changes, are large and obvious whereas others, such as bug fixes, are under the hood and often go unnoticed. New Web site features will normally get their own FAQ designated to teach people about them.

What search results show up under "Competitions and Opportunities?"

When you search Competitions and Opportunities, you will see all related contests and promotions associated with your search term. For example, if you search for "Drake" you will see the following results:

What search results show up under "Blog posts?"

When you search the OurStage blog, you 'll find blog posts related to your search term. For example, if you search for "The Sleep" you will see all of the OurStage blog posts that mention The Sleep. Click on the links to view a specific blog post.

What search results show up under "Artists?"

Enter an artist name in the search field, and you 'll get a list of artists with that term in their name.Search for "Yonas" and get "Yonas" amazing, isn't it? In addition to searching artist �names, this field searches artist bios as well.

What search results show up under "Songs?"

Song searches works THREE ways: it explores artist names, song titles and song descriptions. For example, if you search for the term "hero" you get an amalgamation of songs that have "hero" in the title, songs by bands with "hero" in their name, and songs with "hero" in their description.

What search results show up under "Videos?"

Like songs, video searches explore artist names, song titles and song descriptions. For example, if you search for the term "villain" you get an amalgamation of videos that have "villain" in the title, videos by bands with "villain" in their name, and videos with "villain" in their description.
