• 1790-Federal Marshalls went door to door̶took 19 months
• 80 Questions in 1840 & 1850̶entire household counted
• 1900 Mechanical tabulators • Census Bureau established 1902 • 1930̶insight to economy of depression
• 1940̶computer compiled statistics
• 1960̶Fill in the blank/mailed to homes
• 1970̶Hispanics/Spanish claimed ethnicity
• 1980̶over 50 lawsuits due to improper methods of counting

7. Format & Changes
• Every resident is required by law to complete and return
the Census by the universal deadline, April 1, 2010
• Those who do not participate will be visited by census
takers
• Fines can be issued (Title 13)
6. Mandatory
• March 1, 2010 ‒ Census forms delivered to households • April 1, 2010 ‒ National Census Day • April ‒ July 2010 ‒ Census Takers will visit households
who have not returned Census
• December 2010 ‒ President receives population info. for apportionment
5. Dates to Know
• Visit if you don’t return your census • Can visit up to three times • you can schedule an appointment • you can become a census taker • sworn for life to protect your info.

• The Census focuses on residency, not citizenship • Illegal aliens will not experience negative repercussions
• Foreign exchange students are required to complete the Census
• U.S. residents studying abroad will not complete the
