Sir, I liked the cover story Bane Turns Boon. It’s truethat Covid-19 has taught us many things in life. Manyyouths lost their jobs during the lockdown. But theyhave learnt the art of dealing with depression andhow to become self-sufficient. I really liked the storyof Kasturi Patnaik who turned super chef in a matterof a few days after launching her start-up Petafull.Similarly, the story of Sushant Sahoo is quite inspira-tional. Sushant became jobless and his wife’s beautyparlour and art class faced closure after the govern-ment declared lockdown. I would like to appreciatethe efforts and determination of the couple who didnot get into depression after their income sourcesdried up. They took up the challenge and became suc-cessful due to their determination. They are an inspi-ration for others who always want short-cuts toachieve success.

Ever since the re-

opening of a l ltourist destinationsin October, more than

six months after they were closeddue to the pandemic, there has been asurge in the number of vacationers inOdisha. The last few weeks have seen people,who were cooped-up for several months,travelling to domestic scenic locations tounwind and have fun. Significantly, the remotegetaways like Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuaryof Sambalpur and Sapua Dam Project ofDhenkanal are much in demand than thoseof the popular tourist destinations. Withthe onset of winter, here is what some avidtravelers tell Sunday POST on their experienceduring the pre-and-post lockdown situation.

Prashant Choudhury, a member of WildiesConservation and Research Forum, says “Aftera long gap, three members of our forum in-cluding me visited Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuaryin Sambalpur for three days. Earlier, I hadvisited the picturesque sanctuary on severaloccasions as it is an absolute delight forwildlife enthusiasts like me. But my trip tothe sanctuary this time was worth remem-bering.”

Asked how his latest trip is different fromthe previous ones, he recalls, “We visited thesanc tua ry inNovember, 2019when the sanctuarywas brimming withactivities. Earlier,we used to havesight-seeing froma distance. Beforethe lockdown, an-imals were hardlyin sight due to

human pres-ence in large numbers. But this time, wecould see animals like Indian Gaurs andleopards roaming on the patrol route. Thosewere amazing sights for enthusiasts like us.”

Choudhury goes on to add, “Thanks tothe lockdown, we closely observed activitiesof a 10-member bison family from a distanceof mere 12 ft. We minutely observed howthey are living together. Indian gaur can betermed as the flagship species of the sanctuarywhich is why nature lovers from differentcountries do not miss a chance to visitDebrigarh to watch bison closely. We werethere for 45 minutes and we made a docu-mentation on them which was not possiblein a pre-lockdown scenario. In our previousvisits, we never had such an opportunityto document bisons’ movementsince the place was crowded.Moreover, they are now friendliertowards human beings. Wealso witnessed pugmarks ofleopards but could not tracethem. Besides, we had theopportunity to see migra-tory birds in large numbers.We also carried hand sanitisers,a box of sanitising wipes and facemasks among other essentials aspart of measures taken

to keepcoronavirus

at bay.”

Anwesa Misra , aBhubaneswar-based business analyst, is ofthe opinion that she missed the excitementand enchantment of travelling that she usedto have before the lockdown was imposed.“This lockdown has made life so boring thatI desperately needed a break. Being a passionatetraveler, I did not say no to visit Puri beachto celebrate my niece's birthday. Despite thelooming threat of Covid, we did not abortour Puri trip. We were scared to be at publicplaces but there was not much gatheringthere and every one had put on face masks.It was a big relief to see sanitiser standsand thermal guns at public places.

Anwesa even foundthe surroundings ofSrimandir desertedwhich was, given thepopularity of the tem-ple, quite surprising. But she liked the ‘newnormal’ experience.

“All the restaurants made face masks manda-tory for their customers while auto-rickshawsare engaged to keep the beach free fromgarbage. That apart, local shopkeepers andhawkers are no longer allowed on the beach.Though the Holy City is gradually limpingback to normalcy, I missed the amount ofamusement which we used to have while vis-iting Puri beach with my siblings in the past.”

a great time at Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuaryduring my recent visit. Withless number of tourists visitingthe destination, it is now cladwith thick greenery which is agood sign. Apart from docu-menting on Indian gaurs, weexplored a fishermen’s hamletafter trekking 20 kilometre andspent a few hours with the vil-lage kids. Though I had beento the sanctuary earlier, I missedthis village which is popularfor producing dry fish by roast-ing them in-

stead of drying them in the sun.The journey was a quiet affairwith less human inter-ference. Besides, IvisitedBhitarkanikaNationalParkdur-

ing the pandemic where Icould see a few leopard cats also.”

Soumya Mishra, an avid traveler, could not wait to bein Puri after relaxation in travel guidelines. “A family outing

was always on the cards as thepandemic had flattened all theexcitement and energy. Wewere stuck at home like every-one and life had come to astandstill. So, the trip was likegetting a fresh lease of life. Ifound many people wearingface masks and following thepandemic guidelines. Therewere some aberrations also.”

Asked about her experienceof travelling during pre andpost, she says, “It was quite

different. I used to have lots of fun on Puri beach before thelockdown. Things are not the same now. The hawkers areno longer visible on the beach. You cannot have the delight

of eating street food which is one of the major attractionsof Puri beach. With a mask on your face,

you cannot enjoy a sea bath. Goingby the saying ‘whatever happens,

happens for the best, weshould accept the new

normal in the travel in-dustry and be opti-

mistic.”

Muhammad Imran Ali, a drug de-addiction activist,has recently visited Sapua Dam Project in Dhenkanal. “Myhappiness knew no bounds when my friends and I decidedto go for a picnic. After being confined to our homes for so

many months, I got a chanceto relive pre-pandemic days.Needless to say, I missed theenjoyment that I used to have.Earlier, we loved to go on apicnic with as many people wewant which are not the casenow. Due to pandemic restric-tions, you are allowed to visita place with limited membersin your group. As there wasno crowd at Sapua dam, theplace was far cleaner than earlier.That apart, I felt glad to seepeople wearing masks and

maintaining social distance. However, I felt disheartened tosee liquor bottles at the tourist site.”

OFFICIAL SPEAKS:Rashmi Sonia Tirkey, manager of IndiaTourism in Bhubaneswar, says, “Thoughgovernment has unlocked quite a fewtourist destinations with an aim to createemployment opportunities, picnickersshould be kept in small groups, preferablyfamily members. Visitors are asked todrop the travel plan if any of them feelsick. Ailing people should not risk others’lives by joining them. Looking beautiful on the wedding day is not merely amatter of make-up and dress. It needs weeks of care. Ifa skin care programme is followed a few weeks before

the wedding, it can really help. The skin type and the seasonshould also be taken into consideration. For instance, in winter,even oily skins may feel dry, while dry skins need more mois-turisation and nourishment with creams and oils.

For your daily facial care routine, cleanse your skin twicea day. It’s not just the skin on your face that’s prone todryness in the winter—your hands are often left vulnerableto the same environmental elements as your complexion.Same goes for the rest of your body!

Night time cleansing is more important, in order toremove pollutants and make up before bedtime. So,cleanse the skin daily at night and apply a layer ofmoisturizer before you sleep. You can also apply anall-night mask for your skin. .

For normal to dry skin, use a cleansing cream orgel or, take half a cup of cold milk and add fivedrops of any vegetableoil (til, olive orsunfloweroil).

Put this in a bottle and shake well. Cleanse theskin with it, using cotton wool.

If the skin is oily, use a cleansing lotion or facewash for oily skins. Oily skins also need deep porecleansing. Mix rice powder with curd and apply on theface once or twice a week. Rub gently with small circularmovements and wash off with water.

An oily skin may also feel dry in winter, but when creamis applied, it can lead to pimples. So, mix one teaspoon pureglycerine with 100 ml rose water and keep in a bottle in thefridge. Use a little of this lotion to relieve dryness. It willsoften the skin, without making it oily.

Aloe vera gel or honey may be applied on all skin types, tomoisturise and soften the skin. Apply on the face and washoff with plain water after 20 minutes.

For the face, prepare a mask at home and use it two orthree times a week. For normal to dry skin, mix two teaspoonswheat bran with one teaspoon each of almond meal (badaam),curd, honey and rose water.

For oily or combination skin, mix three teaspoons oatswith curd, honey and egg white or rose water. Mix

everything together into a paste and apply onthe face, avoiding the lips and area around theeyes. Wash it off after 20 minutes.

After applying face mask, soak two cottonwool pads in rose water and use them aseye pads. Lie down and relax. This is extremelyrelaxing and refreshing and a great restorerof both body and mind. Rose water actuallyhas a relaxing effect, helps to remove fatigueand brighten the eyes.

The skin around the eyes is thin anddelicate. It acquires lines and wrinkles easily.Apply an under-eye cream and wipe it offafter 15 minutes, with moist cotton wool.

The skin on the lips is also thin and lacksoil producing glands. It becomes dry andchaps easily. Even if you are using themoistest lipstick you cannot apply it on yourlips without a coat of lip balm or petroleumjelly. For plump looking lips give them a base

coat of lip balm. Aftercleansing, apply al-mond oil or almondcream on the lips dailyand leave it on allnight.

Ultra violet raysare weaker in winterand you don’t gettanned easily. But, ittends to cause wrin-kles, premature age-ing, dryness, anddamage the skin.Most sunscreens havebuilt-in moisturisers.

For extremedryness,

use a cream. Aliquid mois-turiser shoulda l so be usedunder make-up.Keep the skin wellmoisturised.

During winter, optfor water-resistant sunscreensfree from fragrance. This practice will make you glow onyour wedding day and even before after.

In winter, the hair also needs to be nourished with oils.Heat pure coconut oil and apply on the hair. Then dip atowel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hottowel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for fiveminutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap three to four times.After shampoo, apply a creamy conditioner, leave on for twominutes and wash off with plain water. Or, you can apply aleave-on conditioner or hair serum for shine and protection.Oil them every week and get a hair spa at least once a monthprior to your wedding. Add a little olive oil to whichever oilyou apply to give it a little touch of moisture.

You can also give your hair a quick conditioning treatmentbefore shampoo. Mix one teaspoon each of vinegar andalmond oil with one egg. Beat them together well. Massagethe mixture into the scalp. Leave on the mixture for half anhour and then wash your hair. If you do not wish to useegg, add more almond oil.

You must keep yourself hydrated by drinking 8-10 glassesof water daily which will help flush out toxins, improvesskin tone, healthy and glowing skin. You can add fruit juice,coconut water, watermelon, green tea and lassis in your dailyroutine. Eating the right kinds of food will help your skinglow even in the winter months. Have a small box of dryfruits when you are travelling. Try to include regional andseasonal fruits, vegetables in your diet on a daily basis.Snacking on naturally hydrating food will keep your bodyhydrated. Opt for a diet that is rich in Omega 3 essentialfatty acids.

All brides go through some kind of stress. It can ruin allyour winter skincare efforts . To deal with this kind ofmental stress, it is essential to learn to relax. It has beenproved that physical exercise actually helps the body to copewith stress. A few weeks before the wedding, start taking alittle exercise, like going for a walk. In fact, walking is goodfor both body and mind. Yoga and meditation are alsohelpful, in terms of calming the mind and inducing relaxation.You must ensure eight hours of sleepdaily to rejuvenate your skin. If you sleeplate and aren’t getting enough rest, takemini naps during the day. Even a coupleof 30 minute naps through the day willhelp you and your skin!

Wash the prawns and leavethem in a colander to

drain. Add the garlic paste tothe prawns and mix well.Marinate this in a cool placefor at least half an hour. In awok heat the oil and add all theprawns and turn around overhigh heat for about 1 minuteor till slightly brown. Now liftthese prawns out of the wokand keep aside. To the samewok add the chopped leavesand onion. Sauté over high heattill the onions are transparent.Add the sauce ingredients, bringto a boil, stirring all the timeand then simmer for about aminute. Add the prawns, letthem heat through and serve.

GARLIC PRAWNS

INGREDIENTSn Salt: 1 tsp

n Garlic leaves: 2 tbsp, chopped

n Garlic (ground to a paste): 20 cloves

n Onions: 1/2 cup, coarsely chopped

n Oil: 1/4 cup

FOR THE SAUCE:n Cornflour - 2 Tbsp (blended in water)

n Salt: 1 tsp

n Vinegar: 1/4 cup

n Soya sauce: 1 tsp

n Sugar: 1 tbsp

n Water: 1/2 cup

n Cleaned prawns: 250 gm

FOR MARINATING THE PRAWNS:

n Lemon juice: 1 tbsp

PROCEDURE

In a bowl, mix lemon juice, salt,chilli powder and ginger-garlic

paste. Add prawns and marinatefor 15-20 minutes. Heat butter ina kadai (pan). Add marinated prawnsand cook for about 4-5 minutesuntil well cooked. Keep aside inanother bowl. In the same kadai,take 2 tablespoon oil and add cuminseeds. When they sizzle, add choppedonions and saute for about 4-5minutes until onions turn darkbrown. Add ginger-garlic paste,chilli powder, turmeric powder, saltand fry for one minute until themix turns aromatic. Make a pureeof the tomatoes using a blenderand add in the kadai. Mix well andcook on low flame for 3-4 minutes,until the mixture thickens. Addcream, curd and garam masala. Mixwell, keep flame on low. Add cookedprawns, tandoori masala powderand salt to taste. Serve with riceor fresh made naan.

PRAWN TIKKAMASALA

INGREDIENTSn Jumbo prawns (cleaned): 20-25 pieces

n For marination:

n 1/2 Lemon

n Salt: 1 tsp

n Chilli powder: 1 tsp

n Ginger-garlic paste: 1 tsp

n For gravy:

n Curd: 1/2 cup

n Cream: 1/4 cup

n 2 Onions, finely chopped

n 3 Tomatoes (pureed)

n Chilli powder: 1 tbsp

n Salt: 1 tsp

n Turmeric: 1 tsp

n Cumin seeds: 1 tsp

n Garam masala powder: 1 tbsp

n Ginger-garlic paste: 1 tsp

n Butter: 1 tbsp

n Oil: 2 tbsp

n Tandoori masala (for colour): 1 tsp
