ACTIVITY Use a mirror, large or small, and clear some space in front of it. If you don’t have a mirror in an appropriate space, you can turn on your laptop or tablet to video mode (and consider recording to watch later!). Play “Family Time” by Ziggy Marley, or any song of your choice, and move your body to the beat and flow.

Invite your little one to experiment with using different body parts, copying each other’s movements and just being free.

For a fun twist, consider stopping the music and holding your pose like a statue until you start it up again.

LEARNING SKILLS Music and Movement

Materials Mirror, music player, laptop or tablet

Get movingGet Moving activities are designed to either engage your child’s full body in a physical activity to start the day with a jump, OR to start the day planning for play, a critical area of development in organizational thinking.

ACTIVITY Show your toddler how to do a burpee. Do five burpees with your little one and count each one as you go. Afterward, talk about how the body feels when it’s warmed up and ready to go for the day. Encourage your toddler to keep moving throughout the day.

How to Do a Burpee 1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms at your sides. 2. Lower your body into a squat. 3. Place your hands on the floor in front of your feet. 4. Jump your feet back so your body is in the “up” position of a pushup. 5. Do a pushup, then stand up again. That is one burpee.

ACTIVITY Collect a couple of bouncing balls (playground balls, tennis balls, basketballs, etc.) and put them in a bucket or container. Add a shallow amount of water so the balls are slightly floating and able to get wet. Encourage your little one to select a ball and bounce or throw it on a hard surface such as your driveway or patio. Watch as the ball creates shapes and splatters as it moves across the space.

Talk with your little one about the shapes made and what they look like. Work together to see if you can make shapes that are larger or smaller, closer together or farther apart, depending on how hard or softly you throw the ball. What if you hold the ball over your head or closer to the ground? Does the shape change if you roll it instead of throwing it? Experiment with the different ways you can create art using the balls.

LEARNING SKILLS Gross Motor Skills

Materials Various bouncing balls, bucket, water

ACTIVITY Using your copy or following a read-aloud for Donald Crews’ Freight Train, read the story and talk about the different colors of the train.

After the story, have fun being a train. Talk with your little one about the colors he or she is wearing and what color train you both would like to be, and pretend to be a train. Chugga-choo around your house, pump your arms, work your feet quickly and slowly and don’t forget to pull your whistle!

ACTIVITY Let’s play red light, green light! Before the game begins, work with your toddler to create a red sign and a green sign. Decorate two pieces of paper to create the signs using crayons, markers, paint – anything you choose. Once done, you’re ready to play.

Clear a space inside or head outside and stand opposite your toddler with at least five to ten feet between you. Talk about how green means “go” and red means “stop” and when you see each color you need to move closer or freeze like a sculpture.

Hold up each color sign and shout “Go!” or “Stop!” accordingly. Don’t worry about turning your back, but use the color signs to help the flow of the game.

SUMMER LEARNING SUMMER LEARNING FUN WEEKLY PLANSTODDLER • GET MESSY

Get mESSYGet Messy is a section designed for your child to engage in sensory play. Sensory play allows learners to make sense of the world around them by taking in as much information as possible from an experience by using as many intake receptors as possible on their bodies. It allows information to absorb better and with more meaning.

ACTIVITY It is always fun to play in the mud. After reading or listening to the book Mud by Wendy Cheyette Lewison, take your child outside in his or her bathing suit to explore the mud.

To make muddy footprints, step in the mud and then step on paper to make images of your feet. You can do the same with muddy hands and handprints.

Add art tools such as paintbrushes, sponges and rollers and let the driveway be a canvas. Older toddlers can help with cleanup by using the hose to wash away the mud.

LEARNING SKILLS Science and Nature

Materials Book or read-aloud, mud, bathing suit, hose for cleanup

ACTIVITY Fill a sink, a bucket or the bathtub with water and lots of dish soap or bubble bath. Watch as the water turns the soap into bubbles. Encourage your little one to explore how the bubbles feel in his or her hands.

Try stacking handfuls of bubbles on top of one another to create a bubble sculpture. Use cups, spoons and your hands to have some clean, messy fun.

LEARNING SKILLS Creativity and Discovery

Materials Sink, bucket or bathtub; water; dish soap or bubble bath

ACTIVITY Practice dumping and filling. Take out a few containers of different sizes and have your child fill them up with a hose and dump them into empty ones.

Use descriptive language to describe what you see your child doing, such as “You filled that bucket to the top! You picked up the bucket. You are so strong. Splash! It splashed when you tried to pour the water into the smaller bucket, didn’t it?”

LEARNING SKILLS Cognitive and Mathematics

Materials Empty containers and water

ACTIVITY Get out some paper and washable paint. Encourage your little one to paint with his or her feet. If your little one is not walking yet, hold him or her and dip hands or feet in the paint to make patterns on paper.

Put on some music in the background in case your child wants to “dance paint” too.

Feel free to take this activity outside as well.

LEARNING SKILLS Creativity and Discovery

Materials Paint, paper, music (optional)

ACTIVITY Have your little one help you make watercolor paints. Try this five-ingredient watercolor recipe or this two-ingredient watercolor recipe. Use words such as “first” and “then” to describe what steps you do first and what comes next.

Then enjoy using the watercolor paints with your toddler. Give him or her paper and a paintbrush or encourage your child to paint with his or her fingers. Talk about what your child is making. Describe the colors and shapes you two create.

LEARNING SKILLS Creativity and Discovery

ACTIVITY Add paper and paint to a zip-top bag, seal it and put a piece of tape across the top to ensure it does not open. Let your child play with the bags. Ask your little one what he or she sees inside the bag. How does it feel? Younger children can look at it, touch it and crumble it. Talk about how it feels, using words such as smooth, squishy and cold.

Talk about the colors and what the paint looks like (e.g., red, blue, purple, shiny, thick). Older children can open the bags on paper and make a messy art piece.

LEARNING SKILLS Creativity and Discovery

Materials Zip-top baggies, paint, paper, tape

Get FocusedGet Focused is a time of day devoted to learning a specific skill. It is a time that is best for children to engage independently or with their parent to fully concentrate and build new skills through hands-on lessons.

ACTIVITY Get out the blocks or plastic cups and encourage your little one to stack them and create sculptures. For younger children, use simple blocks or stacking toys. Talk about how high your child can stack. Can he or she stack two-by-two? Can your little one stack using all the blocks?

This is an activity that your child can do independently as well.

LEARNING SKILLS Cognitive and Mathematics
