MUSIC CAMPSSUZUKI GUITAR CAMP Ages: 5-7, no experience necessary | RMCMA, Lafayette | June 18-22 | M-F | 9am-12pm Based on the principles of Suzuki music education, students will learn how to play the guitar by ear. The final day of camp will feature a concert for family and friends. Instruments are provided for use in class. RMCMA, Lafayette | June 18-21, 25-28 July 2, 3, 5 Beginning, intermediate or advanced jazz band & improv for most winds, strings, guitar and piano. Includes a special coaching session with Chris Brubeck of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet on July 2. Performance for family and friends on July 5th at 7pm.Instructor: Steve Christopher | Tuition: $150

MEET THE INSTRUMENTS CAMPAges: 4-6 & 7-9 | RMCMA, Lafayette | June 25-28 | M-Th | 9am-12pm Campers will learn about brass, percussion, woodwind & stringed instruments through exciting hands-on activities. We will also explore the connection between music and visual art through creative play. Each day will include a short performance of each of the featured instruments by visiting guest faculty. STRINGS CAMP - CARIBBEAN STYLEAges: 6-12, no experience necessary | RMCMA, LafayetteJuly 9-13 | M-F | 9am-1pmAlong with the study of the Suzuki and traditional string repertoire, we will celebrate the rich culture and music of the Caribbean. Geared for students who play violin, viola and cello. The camp will include morning dance, art, music classes and fun lunchtime activities at noon. Friends and family concert on Friday. Instructors: Nancy McNeill, Kat Fritz, Danny Schade, Jane Whittlesey from pARTiculars, and others | Tuition: $235 STRINGS CAMP - FOR YOUNGER PLAYERS Ages: 3-5 (with parent or caregiver) no experience necessary RMCMA, Lafayette | July 9-13 | M-F | 11am-1pm Specially designed camp for younger players. Sing, dance, explore rhythm and pitch... and play the violin! Developmentally appropriate activities provide a solid foundation for budding musicians. RMCMA GOES TO BROADWAYAges: 8-17 | RMCMA, Lafayette | July 9-13 | M-F, 1:30-4:30pm This week-long camp will give young performers a chance to explore a wide variety of scenes from the musical stage. Students will get to experience the excitement of vocal performance and learn the basics of performing on stage. Friends and family concert on Friday evening. JUMP START TO MIDDLE SCHOOL BANDAges: Rising 6th graders | RMCMA, Lafayette | July 23-27M-Th | 10-11am - woodwinds & percussion; 11:15-12:15pm - brass; Friday | 11am-12:30pm - all instruments; 2pm - concert/celebrationCampers spend a week honing musical skills for the transition from Elementary to Middle School band. We meet Monday through Thursday in sections to build on the skills learned in 5th grade. On Friday we join together for a full band rehearsal and concert for family and friends. YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTS: Mozart’s Magnificent VoyageAges 4 & up, fun for the whole family! Chautauqua Auditorium, Boulder - Saturday, June 23 & Monday June 25, 10am Tickets just $8 / $7 for groups of ten or moreThis semi-staged concert for families features 23 excerpts of Mozart’s music, including themes from his operas The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute, as well as other examples of his most important and engaging works. Introduce the young people in your life to one of the greatest composers in the history of music. After each concert, join us on the lawn for a Music Fair where kids meet costumed characters, try the instrument petting zoo, enjoy face painting, balloon tying, snacks and more! July 27: STRINGS: The Sounds of NatureExplore the music of animals and other critters with members of the CMF Orchestra.

MEET MARK O’CONNOR: FIDDLER, COMPOSER, AND VIOLIN VIRTUOSO - $10All Ages, and musicians, bring your stringed instruments!Chautauqua Community House | July 13 | 11am-12:30pm

Grammy® winning composer and violin/fiddle virtuoso Mark O’Connor will discuss and demonstrate his American style of string playing, improvisation, and the process of composition. Sure to both educate and entertain, young musicians particularly will benefit from his warm and engaging interaction with his audiences. Observers welcome, and appropriate for elementary through adult musicians, with some group playing possible.

Join LA’s renowned Street Drum Corps for a high-energy, interactive, educational street drumming experience! THE CAT WITH THE YELLOW STAR: A CONVERSATION WITH ELA WEISSBERGER Ages: 10-18 | Canyon Theater at Boulder Public Library Friday, June 29 | 2-4pm

Young people are invited to join Ela Weissberger and hear her remarkable story. As a child she was sent to the Terezin concentration camp, and while there, performed the role of “The Cat” in productions of Brundibar - a children’s opera and propaganda piece presented for Red Cross visitors. Since surviving the Holocaust, Ela has dedicated her life to sharing her story. FREE

IMPROV WORKSHOP WITH TIME 4 THREE Ages 15 and up, and bring your instruments!RMCMA, Lafayette | Monday, July 16 | 2-4pm

Join the passionate and engaging members of Time for Three, whose members–Zachary (Zach) De Pue, violin; Nicolas (Nick) Kendall, violin; and Ranaan Meyer, double bass – are taking the musical world by storm with their inventive combination of composing, arranging, and spirited performances. This is a delightful and informal workshop that will include playing, improv, and experimentation! Tuition: $10

WORKSHOP: FIDDLIN’ FOR CLASSICAL VIOLINISTS Middle school thru adults, at least one year of playing experience RMCMA, Lafayette | Monday, July 23 | 6-8pmAre you a classically-trained violinist with an interest in learning more about improvisation and playing by ear? This workshop introduces three standard jam tunes from the bluegrass, Celtic and blues traditions and offers some insight into the bowing styles and ornamentations that accompany these fiddling traditions. All children are naturally musical! We have a range of offerings for the earliest beginners through age 6. While your child is having fun singing, listening, moving, and playing rhythm instruments, he/she is also developing an understanding of specific musical concepts such as high/low, fast/slow, soft/loud, steady beat, and beginning pitch matching, as well as valuable social and concentration skills. This is a great time to jump into participatory classes like Classically Kids, and also the time when most children land on a favorite musical instrument for individual study. Led by a music educator, each workshop provides kids an opportunity to meet CMF’s guest artists, visit an orchestra rehearsal, learn key information about the music CMF performs, and attend a concert at Chautauqua!

June 27: Stories in MusicComposers the world over use music to tell stories. You’ll get to meet a cast member from the famous children’s opera Brundibar and Holocaust survivor, Ela Weissberger, and hear how Russian composer Serge Prokofiev portrays the beautiful Cinderella.

July 11: Masterful MozartMozart loved to write for the piano and orchestra. Meet Stewart Goodyear, a famous piano soloist, and learn how Mozart played with the colors of the instruments to create beautiful music!

July 18: Music & The Solar SystemThe Planets is Gustav Holst’s most well-known composition. Explore the reaches of our galaxy (including Pluto!) through this fascinating musical depiction.

July 25: Conducting is the CoolestStanding in front of a symphony orchestra is an unforgettable experience. You’ll get your own conducting baton and Maestro Christie will share some of his secrets in a conducting lesson.

August 1: Composers! How Do They Do It?Learn about Beethoven’s well-known Fifth Symphony, as well as some newly composed pieces of music. CU College of Music professor Daniel Kellogg, who wrote a special piece for the CMF orchestra this season, will share tips about the art of composition!

FLUTE ENSEMBLEMiddle School | RMCMA, LafayetteJune 20-July 25 | Wednesdays | 5:30-6:30pmThe Flute Ensemble is a performance-oriented rehearsal class that explores flute music from a wide range of eras and styles. Flutists will participate in at least one performance, to include duets, trios and full flute choir repertoire. Instructor: Ysmael Reyes | Tuition: $65

LEARN TO JAM: BLUEGRASS STYLE! Middle school thru adults | RMCMA, Lafayette | June 25-July 23 Mondays | 2-3pm (On July 16, 2-4pm, we will join Time for Three for a workshop)This is an introduction to the world of jamming, offered by Annie Savage, who has over 25 years of jamming experience. Learn standard jam tunes, follow chords, improvise, and communicate with others in a real jam during the final class! Participants need at least one year of playing experience on any of these instruments: fiddle/violin, bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo or viola. Instructor: Annie Savage | Tuition: $60
