I don’t think there’s anything new or different that I can add to the mountain of commentary except to say that what shocked me most was not what actually happened in Parliament, but the lack of understanding on the part of Canadians across the country. I was stunned to hear ordinary Canadians taking their cue from the prime minister in denouncing the events as a coup d’etat, or an illegal act wantonly acting against the “will of the people.” Who do these Canadians think sits in the opposition? Martians? Who do they think elected the opposition? Russians? No dear friends, other Canadian citizens elected these individuals. Furthermore, enough members of the other parties were elected that their issues and concerns should have carried some weight with a governing party that is still a minority. Yes, dear friends, a minority! The bigger question we Canadians should be asking is how this whole thing came to happen in the first place. Where was the so-called co-operation we were all hoping for? Where was the consultation and the respect? Where was the concern regarding the economic crisis facing our country? Whether you hate the idea of a coalition or like the idea, it still boils down to the fact that our leaders let us down. Instead of taking the opportunity to build bridges with representatives voted into Parliament by Canadians, the government chose to poke them in the eye. Instead of dealing with the financial crisis looming over us like a big black cloud, they chose to play partisan games in an effort to weaken the opposition and then, when it all fell apart, went into attack mode, claiming that somehow the opposition’s plan was some illegal attack. A little humble pie would have been nice. A small show of mea culpa...but no, now we will be saddled with six weeks of melodrama as we have to listen to both sides posturing endlessly about how right they were to do what they did. I think that most Canadians who stand for election have the good of their communities at heart, no matter what political party or point of view they represent. In my view all sides should tone down the rhetoric and start to build some bridges instead of blowing them up. If I could sum up my Christmas wish list it would look just a little bit like this: • No attack ads, in fact how about some nice chummy pictures of all members of Parliament working together? A fun snowball tournament with some snow in the face for some of the key plates perhaps? • No more talk about anyone destroying Parliament, play nice and we’ll get further ahead. • Get serious about the economy...a pat on the back for local MP Tony Clement, who was busy trying to work out a way to shore up our ailing auto industry during the past week. Liberals, get a leader who can actually string two words together without bumbling, and do it fast if you ever expect to recover as a party. • And last but not least, that Canadians take some time to bone up on how our parliamentary system actually works! There isn’t any reason why you local politicians cannot come up with a plan for a shelter with a budget with money coming from Parry Sound and all adjacent communities. Keep the OSPCA out of it – they would only deplete our funds. I am sure there are enough people with experience that can get this up and running, if they only had the financial support. Organized properly, residents and local businesses would gladly help with fundraising. Why not give this a try? How much is being spent on the dog pound now? How much funding was Parry Sound giving to the OSPCA when they had a shelter here? Add these two costs together and let’s see what funding we can start with. Why is the prevention of cruelty to animals not a concern? The ratepayers think it is. Have our local politicians really given this issue the time it deserves? Keep speaking up everyone.
