Here it is, the very first issue of Get Geeky, the online

magazine for geeks and nerds alike. Now i know some

of you are probably going “What is this crap?” but i

assure you, the things you’ll find in here will definitely

not be”crap”...unless we are actually writing about crap.

The whole idea for an online magazine for geeks came

about when a group of comic book lovers met on a Face-

book Group called “Mizo Comics Geeks” and decided

something had to be done to promote and make more

people aware about superheroes, comic books, videogames

and other stuffs that has led them to be called “Geeks”.

There are sports magazines, fashion magazines, music

magazines, etc. So why not a Geek Magazine? If you are

searching for a good reading material to satisfy the geek

in you, GET GEEKY could just be what you’re looking

for.Since this is our first issue, keep in mind that the magazine

might not be perfect...YET! But we are open to suggestions

from you, the readers, on how to make GET GEEKY better

and geekier.Geek-O

Editor’s letter

The 21 year old concept artist and illustrator, who captured the attention and mesmerized everyone in the art scene in Mizoram with his unique and modern twist of art is finally here. Born on April 9th 1992 he was brought up in govt. complex in Aizawl , Mizoram. At a very young age he developed a keen interest in art and drawing and was a very fast learner. Mawia’s artworks have found places in the cov-er of art magazines across the country. Quick witted, down to earth and with a passion for art, thats Laldinmawia (Mawia) Chawngthu.one of the top young artists in Mizoram.

From his home town in Mizoram, Mawia took his interest in art to the next level when he finally decided to take it as a profession where he worked in “drawizart” a small art studio in Zarkawt , Aizawl when he was just 18 years old. It was immediately recognizable that he had talent.”I have always admired art and my inspi-rations come from reading comics , my family has always been supportive of what I do and my elder brother is one of my biggest inspirations ,” he says. Over the years he has experi-mented with different styles and tech-niques of art and found his heart drawn to “realistic art”. After working for 2 years in Aizawl , he was offered a job by Joel Sailo the founder of “Tribe Fiction” a street wear clothing line in Bangalore. “It has always been a dream of Joel’s…to create his own company and display unique, fresh and exotic art in any form. We are working hard for this company to be the biggest cloth-ing brand in India,” he added. Tribe fiction is now becoming one of the hottest trends in

Bangalore since its launch a few months back, we can see many youngsters sporting the hip trend everywhere . This brand not only ups your style quotient but will also have you standing out in the crowd. Mawia’s work make up for 75% of the designs in TF and judging from the popularity of the brand ,I’d say It’s going pretty well and who knows it might make a stunning style statement.“I decided to work in Banga-lore as I wanted to explore and try something new “, says the young artist who has been living in Bangalore for a year now.

Mawia’s life has not been an easy one, it was in 2006 that he started to develop severe pain in his right leg. An x-ray was done and the doctors assured him that there was nothing wrong and prescribed medications for the pain . A few years passed and he felt a lump in his leg in the year 2009. Since things did not go well with the initial treatment, an MRI and biopsy was done in 2012 . He was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma which is a type of cancer which develops from certain tissues like fats , muscle, nerves ,blood vessels or deep skin tissues. He underwent radiation therapy and then chemotherapy as per his doctor’s advice. He finished with his last cycle of chemotherapy at the end of May 2013 in Baptist Hospital, Ban-galore. “My brother and (co-worker) Joel and his family has taken good care of me all this time I was in the hospital and I’m really grateful for this,” says our young artist who asked all our readers to keep him in ‘your thoughts and prayers’. He is now re-covering from his chemo and working hard as ever. The emotional roller coaster that he rode built an incredible strength and hope within him -to thrive and to never give up. Such an inspiration

ONGOING PROJECTS:Besides Tribe fiction, he is currently working on an advertisement for IBM company as an illustrator and as a concept artist for an android game called ‘burger barrage’ for Appster Austra-lia gaming company. ”I’m also working on a ‘secret’ project collaborating with my friends called ‘The Fairytale Hoax’ which will be an ani-mated one soon to be released this winter,” he concludes. (Here’s a sneak peak of the project)

It’s often said that “the book is bet-ter than the movie” but ‘Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox’, the latest animated fea-ture released by DC might just be one where “the movie is as good as the book”. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox is based on the DC crossover mini se-ries Flashpoint written by Geoff Jones, one of the most notable graph-ic novel writers whose work include the likes of DC’s The Flash: Re-birth, Green Lantern: Rebirth and other cross-over series like 52, Infinite Series and Blackest Night to name a few. The Flashpoint Series premiered in May 2011 and was used by DC to launch The New 52, wherein DC ended all continuity of their titles and relaunched its characters, more or less from scratch, where in some cases with new origins and versions of their current characters. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox centers around The Flash (Barry Allen) where during one moment of self-ishness alters the time-line. Barry wakes up in his lab to discover that his timeline had been alterd, where in this one, his mother, Nora, is still alive, Citizen Cold

(Captain Cold, his arch nemesis in his world) is Central City’s greatest hero and The Flash, Superman and the Justice League never ex-isted. But only Barry seems to know that the

world has changed and so seeks the help of the ‘best’ detective he knows, Batman. But Barry goes to find out that this world’s Batman isn’t the one he knew. Batman, who was reluctant to be-

lieve Barry at first, eventually helps him to get his powers back and try to help The Flash to restore the timeline. But the world has turned into a sort of post apocalyptic earth as a result of an all out war between the Amazons and the Atlentians, led by Wonder Woman and Aquaman (who aren’t the heroes The Flash

knew them as in his timeline) and both The Flash and Bat-

man are drawn into the war by Cyborg

~Robato

and the resistance. During their ongoing quest to re-turn the timeline to its pre-vious state and also to stop an impending apocalypse The Flash eventually finds out that Professor Zoom (The Reverse Flash) had a hand in changing the time-line. (I think thats enough spoiler for one review) OK, i’ve always followed DC and mostly know which animated fea-ture they are going to re-lease. But maybe i’ve been a bit lazy or busy with other stuff that i came to know about The Flashpoint Paradox only after its release (read as ‘when the download link was available on the net’). Having read the crossover series, i knew that the entire series could not be cramped into just 75 minutes or so and wasn’t really sure which part of the crossover would be included and which ones would be left out. I wasn’t left too diasppoint-ed though, but i wish more of the crossover stories could have been included, like Super-man’s back story, which wasn’t really relevant but was kind of interesting (maybe just for me coz I love backstories/origins) and it would have been interesting to have seen the story which actually led to the war and the conspir-acies behind it (included in the Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman and Flashpoint: Wonder Woman and the Furies arc of the graphic nov-

el). I personally enjoyed the scene where The Flash deliverd a message to Bruce from Bat-man (which made me remember.. the scene in the graphic novel where The Flash meets his mother before restoring the timeline was left out from the feature and is one that I wish

the creators would have included) as it showed a more human or a softer side to the characters. Apart from the story it-self, i kind of wish that the creators would have stuck to the original art-work. It didn’t stray away from it too much, but this one had a more modern anime feel to it (as pointed out by more a renowned reviewer). But i don’t think most of the viewers would mind

too much (especially if you haven’t read the graphic novel) and neither did I (well not thaaaaaaaaat much... sorta).

All in all, Justice League: The Flash-point Paradox would be enjoyed by fans of the comics and novices alike and while i want-ed more storylines from the graphic novel to be added it would have taken the focus off of The Flash and might have twisted or messed up the whole plot of the feature. So, another wonderful release from DC which shows that comics or graphic novels have come a long way from being just a children’s book but still have enough material and plot to leave a message for everyone and not just kids. One such line being, “Accept the things you can-not change, have the courage to change the things you can and have the wisdom to know the difference”- Nora Allen. If you enjoyed Justice League: The Flaspoint Paradox, i’m sure you’d also en-joy the graphic novel The Flashpoint series and i highly recommend you read it.

The wind rises is an animated historical fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, realeased in Japan as “KazeTachi-nu”. Tachinu is a fictionalized biography of Jiro Horikoshu, designer of Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter aircraft which served in WW-II. Miyazaki has claimed that this will be his last film, which was officially confirmed when he announced his retirement shortly after the film’s release. This movie depicts Japan in the years leading upto WW-II, where the country faced some of the same problems that have plagued the country in recent years like earthquake, economic stagnation etc. A young boy named Jiro Harikoshi dreamt about climbing onto the roof and flying away in a bird-like-plane where

suddenly a large monsterous ship emerges from the sky and drops some anthropomor-phic bombs on him when he suddenly wakes up and he chases the vision in his burgeoning career, as the movie flashes forward to 1923 and he makes his way to engineering school. In school, Horikoshi nimbly makes his way into the heart of the profession, develop-ing increasingly more complex aircraft and never losing his drive. Along the way, he de-velops a relationship with the tender Nahoko, a woman he rescues from the train crash who reenters his life years later . The movie has a beautiful story line which depicts Miyazaki’s

KAZE TAICHINU(The Wind Rises)

emotions and thoughts quiet well. “The Wind Rises” maintains a realist streak driven more by dialogue and thoughtful pauses than out-landish imagery. The wind rises has stirred quite a con-

troversy in Japan which is the native place of Mayazaki, where it was released on July 20th. The film received criticisms from both polit-ical parties. Some questioned Miyazaki why he would make a film about “built killing machines” and others even pointed out that the laborers who built the planes were Korean and Chinese who were forced into labor. The film also received criticisms from the South Korean Republic. Apart from all the criticisms the film has grossed over $7 million and be-came the no1 film even after four weeks after its release. In 2011 Miyazaki told Japan Cut Mag-azine that he was inspired to make the mov-ie “The Wind Rises” after he read a quote of Hori Koshi ‘s saying that all he wanted to do was make ‘something beautiful’. Miyazaki objected to the new Prime Ministers (Minister Shinzo Abe) plan to amend the country’s con-stitution to allow for building of a full fledged military, boosting the limited self-defence forces put in place after the war. Inspite of his objections to this, some Japanese conserva-tives called him a ‘traitor’ and ‘anti-Japanese’.
