WELCOME!Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral! We are a church at the heart of our city, where we pray deeply and serve generously. In this brochure you will find a description of each of our ministries, and who to contact if you would like to become involved. PRAYAcolytes

The ministry of the acolytes centers on the liturgies of the church and on helping to create a prayerful environment. The crucifer, taper-bearers, and thurifer help focus the congregation’s attention on the high points of the liturgy by carrying the cross, candles, and blessed incense, and the servers help at the altar for communion.

Acolytes have a very flexible schedule, and you can serve whenever you sign up. There are opportunities for serving not only on Sundays, but at special liturgies, too, such as Christmas and the Easter Vigil. Acolyting is a great way for people of all ages to get involved in the liturgy in an up-close and hands-on way.

Altar Guild Altar Guild welcomes any new members who are interested in setting the Lord’s table. We are a behind-the-scenes ministry that allows time for quiet reflection. Newcomers are taught to prepare for the Eucharist and reverently handle the Holy Sacrament afterwards. Members develop an intimate acquaintance with our Cathedral traditions by preparing for and participating in our weekly and special services.

Members are assigned to one of four groups. These four groups alternate weekly responsibility for set up and clean up of services. The commitment is one service per

Christ Church Cathedral Chorister Program and Parents’ Guild

Girl and Boy Choristers are central to the Cathedral’s Music Program leading the worship at the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services respectively and also at weekday ChoralEvensongs(Men&Boys,everyThursdayat5:15p.m. and Girls, first and third Wednesdays of each month at5:15p.m.).

Key to the success of this program is the Parents’ Guild which assists in everything from chorister supervision and choir robe maintenance to fundraising for tours and concerts and hospitality when we host visiting choirs. In addition, the Parents’ Guild exists to provide a network of support and fellowship for the Choir Parents themselves.

Details about the program and guild are available under the “Sacred Music” Section of the Cathedral Website.

A joy of singing and praising God is required, and an interest in experiencing worship and sacredmusicfromtheHispanicculture.Ourdirectorworks with singers of all ages and experience levels. We sing from a Spanish language hymnal with guitar and keyboard accompaniment.

At this time, our rehearsal time is at 11 a.m. on Sunday mornings before the 1p.m. Hispanic Service. We would like a commitment to be at rehearsals and services on Sunday mornings/early afternoon. We have extra practices and sing more challenging music for Christmas and Easter, and other special occasions. There is a treasure trove of classical music from Latin American composers that is as beautiful and challenging as the traditional sacred music sung by the professional choirs of Christ Church Cathedral.

We invite anyone who can match pitch or play guitar or keyboard to get involved.

Asgreeters,we:

Sacred Arts We invite you to support the renowned music program at the Cathedral, which is one of our most significant offerings to our church community and our city. This consists, in part, of distributing the service bulletins, stamping parking tickets, and, if necessary, helping people in finding available seating. Ushers also collect the offering and guide those who are taking communion. They should be reliably available on select Sundays and also for special events at the Cathedral. Ushers should try to be especially aware of any visitors and attempt to assist them in any way to make them feel comfortable and welcome. In addition, if a visitor or parishioner is in distress, the ushers are the primary first responders for the person’s need and to ensure the service may go on uninterrupted.

Vergers’ Guild The Vergers’ Guild, like all of the liturgical guilds, is basically a ministry of welcome. We help to keep services running smoothly and to coordinate all of the moving parts that go together to make a liturgy. Vergers oversee much that goes on on Sunday mornings and at special liturgies such as Christmas and Easter, helping the acolytes and choir to find their places. They help create a prayerful space in which the congregation can focus their attention on worship and find themselves carried by the flow of the liturgy. Vergers serve at one or two Sunday liturgies a month, and are occasionally called upon to serve at Evensongs and other special liturgies.

LEARNCatechumenate

If you have ever wanted to explore your faith more deeply and connect with other members of Christ Church, then the Catechumenate is a great place to start.

Catechumenate is an ancient Greek word for the process of learning and preparing for baptism, and we continue that tradition here, and open it up to anyone who wants to engage more closely with their faith. The Catechumenate meets weekly in the fall and winter, and provides an environment for catechumens to share their stories with one another and to connect their own experiences to the basic roots of our faith.

Education For Ministry Ever wish you knew more and more and more about your faith? Education for Ministry (EfM) can help you become more fully and deeply familiar with Scripture and the traditions of the church, and it can open you to seeing life through a “theological lens” – to see how your everyday life is connected to and reflective of your life of faith. EfM is designed for people who want to experience God at every turn and who want to be able to talk about God’s presence freely and fully and joyfully!

Developed by the University of the South in Sewanee, EfM is thorough and intense – a four-year, once each week for nine months program that will leave you with lasting friendships and a sense of readiness for a deeper involvement in the various ministries of the church.

We have afternoon and evening groups available and scholarships to assist you with the class fee of $350 annually.

If you are ready to dig deep and expand the space where God dwells, give us a call before the fall sessions begin.

SERVEAdopt-a-Family

The Adopt-a-Family (AAF) ministry provides relief for families in need through our Pack the Backpack mission in the summer and the Magi Mission at Christmas. We work closely with a few local ministries to provide full backpacks for 100 or more students prior to the start of the school year. At Christmas, we provide gifts for approximately 25 families. Each family member receives three gifts each, two practical and one fun, and families receive grocery gift cards. Families with little ones in diapers also get a pack or two of diapers as well.

Each mission requires about two months’ worth of planning and production and we welcome help in any form from members of the congregation.

St. Theresa’s GuildThe St. Theresa’s Guild provides friendship to home-bound and elderly members of the Cathedral parish. The guild visits and distributes greeting cards and gifts on birthdays, Christmas and Easter with a vision of keeping all of our members, whether able to attend services or not, involved as continuing members of our common life.

We meet just twice yearly, a few weeks before Christmas and Easter, and most of our work is behind-the-scenes with phone calls, cards, and occasional visits to our homebound members. We welcome newcomers and are glad to pair you with a longtime member if you’d prefer to make your first visit with a friend!
