The learning process

The do-it-yourself (DIY) trend will continue unabated in 2013; the desire to be the one at the controls is endless. The trend is evolving, and we are finding more and more diverse examples of DIY. At first, it was simply a matter of an increasing number of people exhibiting a preference for making things for personal use; today, however, we have reached a point where DIY is affecting everyday living. At first, DIY was a hobby; now it has become a lifestyle. A way of thinking, an educational process.Nevertheless, it is still about learning, experimenting and gaining experience.

its origin

DIY is building, altering or repairing something without professional or expert assistance. The popular saying “do it yourself” emerged in the 1950s and refers to the rise in people undertaking various minor construction projects on their own, not only as a way to spend their leisure time doing something creative but also as a way to save money.

DIY stores

Lately, myriad shops have been popping up in France where you can do all kinds of everyday things that you previously hired someone else to do.

Consider the “self garage,” where you can rent a bridge for your car and change the oil yourself. Professional mechanics are on site to make sure everything runs smoothly.

In the “personal care” category, there is the hair salon where, after you get your hair cut, you can blow-dry it yourself under a professional hairstylist’s watchful eye. Then there is the dog grooming salon where you can rent the necessary supplies to give your pet a new ‘do.

Supper club

A lot is happening in the world of cooking, too. The English “supper club” concept is growing more popular here. This involves going to someone’s home and having them cook for you. A related concept is home takeaway, which allows friendly home chefs to introduce the neighbourhood to their culinary talents by selling their food online. This way, you share a delicious meal and get to know your neighbours. See, the personal aspect is a crucial aspect of this trend. You share your knowledge with others for the sake of stimulating and inspiring them.

inspire & motivate

This gives satisfaction. Online, you can find countless instructional videos in which people have taken the time to explain their expertise as a way to motivate and inspire viewers. This is not about making money, either; it is about the sense of satisfaction that everyone involved stands to gain. Basically, DIY is not a hobby; it is a lifestyle.
