GESIS Training Courses

GESIS offers postgraduate training courses in social science methods since the 1970s – from finding secondary data to data collection and analysis.

Our instructors are experts in their field. Participants will learn specialised methods of empirical social research with an emphasis on their practical application. Most courses comprise lectures, exercises and practical work using PCs. Networking amongst participants is a crucial element of every course.

We thus build bridges between university-level research methods training and state-of-the-art research at an inter-national level – tailored to your needs.

Methods Seminar

Since 1980, the GESIS Methods Seminar has focused on im-parting basic knowledge and skills to work with quantitative research data in a German-language setting. The seminar is designed for researchers from all areas of the social sciences and humanities. The Basic Modules cover the fundamentals such as: research methodology of historical social research, database management and descriptive statistics. The Advanced Modules build upon information from the Basic Modules and cover the theory and application of basic multivariate data analysis techniques. All courses have an online component. The four- and five-day on-site modules are offered annually at GESIS in Cologne.

Workshops

GESIS Workshops are short courses of one to three days, providing training relevant to all phases of the research data cycle and more. The workshops take place in our locations in Mannheim and Cologne. Most workshops are conducted in German, some are offered in English. The courses are appli-cation-oriented and interdisciplinary, and offer further trai-ning in a wide array of social science research methods (quantitative and qualitative), including

• data collection

• questionnaire design

• data analysis

• introduction to specific survey programs

Spring Seminar

The Spring Seminar is a training course for social scientists interested in advanced techniques of data analysis – especially data reduction – and in the application of these techniques to data. While in the lectures the logic of models and the corresponding analysis strategies will be ex-plained, during the exercises and in the practical work the partici-pants are given the opportunity to apply these methods to data. The seminar covers three modules of one week each, to some extent being based on each other. The program has a different focus every year. Language of instruction is Eng-lish. The Spring Seminar takes place annually in February/March in Cologne.

Summer School

The Summer School in Survey Methodology equips partici-pants with essential skills in the design, planning, execution and quality assurance of surveys. It is designed for PhD stu-dents and young researchers interested in improving their knowledge and skills in survey methodology. The summer school is entirely held in English and takes place in Cologne every August. Most courses last 5 days. Course topics are for example:

• questionnaire design

• nonresponse

• web surveys

• cross-national research

• mixed methods
