Gerunds

• Gerunds are the base form of a verb + an ‘ing’ ending.

• They function as NOUNS.

Example:Frolicking is relaxing. I dislike knitting.

Gerunds

Verb + ing = Noun

Play + ing = Playing

Jump + ing = Jumping

Eat + ing = Eating

Examples• Showering is important if you want a date.

• Running is awful.

• I don’t like showering.

• The worst form of exercise is running.

NOTICE: The gerund does NOT have to be the subject of the sentence; it can also be the object.

Be Careful!

• Make sure the word your identifying as a gerund isn’t actually a verb! Ask yourself, “Is the word a THING or an ACTION?”
