It is astonishing to observehow this genius arrived at a nearly complete understanding of the contents of Bataktexts with the scanty data concerning the Batak language occuring in the literature inhis student days. After his work all these older data lost their importance. .. In the dic-tionary the Batak words - given in Batak script - are arranged according to a sequenceby Van der Tuuk and based on the phonic order of the Sanskrit alphabet. One shouldnever think that one might omit learning the script and rest content with the laterromanized dictionaries. For Dairi-Batak, Van der Tuuk still remains the only printedsource’ (Voorhoeve, Languages of Sumatra, p.9). - (Without the plates).

The remaining three yearsof Wallace’s travels (1859-1862) took him east to the Papuan group, where he exploredMacassar, the Aru Islands (where he studied the bird of paradise) then New Guinea. This was interspersed with return visits west to Ternate and Amboyna, and theCelebes group for the first time. He visited Sumatra before returning to England viaSingapore (Speake, Encyclopedia, p.1264).
