DIRECT SALES INCREASEi

Direct sales to storekeepers are again increasing. Such direct sales are most resent-

ed especially at this time. Letters, phone calls and wires, which have been received

by The Cash Box in greatly increased numbers these past few weeks, attest to this.

Many coinmen have found themselves suddenly ordered out of good locations, as

these retailers become acquainted with machines and prices. They also have learned,

in many cases, and much to their amazement, that the same firms from whom they pur-

chase their machines are also the firms who are selling them out of their locations.

Some prominent firms have been openly mentioned in these letters, wires and phone

calls.

Today, the location owner will grab at machines. He does not know anything about

servicing overhead, mechanical problems, general machine costs, scarcity of parts and

supplies, or any of the other myriad headaches which confront the average coinman who

is working so hard to keep going and to maintain himself in business during this war-

time period.

All the location owner is interested in - is that he will get 100$ of the collec-

tions from the machine, and that he will not have to split this with anyone else.

The coinman who comes around to see him, who coddles him, who caters to him, who

services his machines and who, at regular intervals, takes verbal lashings from himfor insufficient supplies of new records, for too few service calls, and gets the

blame when the take drops, as well as for a thousand and one other things over whichhe has little, if any, control, is a very sad man indeed, when he finds a machinesold directly to his location.

This turn of events, where once again eertain firms have decided that this iff

the time to sell direct, instead of to the man whom they have been selling right along

and who has proved to be the backbone of their business, is simply burning the candle

at both ends. And no candle can last long under those conditions.

These coinmen who have been so hurt are now getting to the point where they willnot brook further further direct sales to their locations from firms hundreds and, insome cases, thousands of miles away from their territories. Furthermore, many ofthese coinmen are today in such financial condition whereby they can most vigorouslycontest such action.

It hurts any coinman like the very devil, who has worked for months and monthsto d eve lop a little out-of-the-way diner into a well paying location, and who haspurchased machine after machine and switched and changed and coddled and pampered andtaken abuse until he has made this location one of the outstanding on his route, to

call around one fine morning and find his machine turned around, and another machineinstalled in its place. And then have this storekeeper tell him, "This is my machine.I just bought it. Take your machine out. 1*11 keep all the money from now on."

Such action must lead to retaliation. It is bound to stir up something that willprove anything but beneficial to such firms in this industry. This is the time whenteamwork is necessary. Ihis industry is entering into its greatest era. Such poorbusiness methods simply must be eliminated if this business is to progress and prosper.

The man who fought so hard to maintain himself thruout this wartime period has

done so to become a better customer for tomorrow. But, if such actions continue, howcan this coinman ever remain a customer when his locations are taken away from him?

The answer to such actions will eventually come of itself. The man who is outon the route, who is in aontrol of a certain number of locations in his territory andwho, when hurt, can hurt back much harder than he will ever be hurt, is sure to come

to some method of retaliation which may hurt all concerned with this industry. It maybe cutting off his nose to spite his face, but at the same time it may also be the solu*

tion to righting some great wrongs that have been done him time and time again. It isvery hard to control a hurt and angered man.

Such direct selling firms must remember that when they sell a location owner thatthis storekeeper knew nothing of coin machines, or their possible earning power, untilsome operator developed the spot. And the coinman in this location being hurt by sucha direct sale - madly hurt - will eventually wreak his vengeance. And that may upsetmany an apple-cart in this industry.

Coinmen will agree, who will think back but a few years, that the manufacturerscould have easily sold direct to locations, instead of to operators, if they had sodesired. But they found that the operator was the logical man to handle the machinesand that, by the operator making a business of placing machines on various locationson a percentage basis, he became an unusually fine merchandising factor for the furth-er progress and growth of this industry.

Therefore, this operator must be protected. More care should be taken that thestorekeeper does not, whether accidentally or intentionally, pick up a magazine thatcomes to his newstand and learn, by looking thru this magazine, the price of the verymachine some operator has installed in his place. The storekeeper loses nothing bywriting to the advertiser. And, if the advertiser is careless, he will sell this man.

Furthermore, one location owner tells another. He passes the word along. Andbefore many weeks have passed by, the operator who worked so hard to develop these lo-cations and to maintain them, finds himself practically out of business.

Once these location owners have their own machines they are very, verv reluctantabout replacing them with new equipment. Ihey put all the push back of them that theycan. Ihey get the garage or radio mechanic around the corner to repair them. Theystimulate play on them where they wouldn’t do this for the operator. Ihey use everymeans possible to keep this selfsame machine going for years - so that they will nothave to buy a new machine. And this has been proved time and time again.

.In short, by picking up a newstand magazine, by seeing the price of the machinenow in their location openly quoted, by buying the machine themselves, these locationowners upset the complete merchandising principle which has created and built this in-dustry and which principle, if maintained, will make this a greater and grander andbetter business for all now concerned with it.

Sorely, ‘then* it profits no man in this trade to help in any fashion whatsoeverto upset the successful merchandising procedure which has created this industry, andwhich will carry this industry forward to an even greater and more glorious future,y se ling direct to locations, or by advertising to locations, and educating them tothfi n f m O r»r\ T non °

“The Coin Machines Merry-Go-Round

selves, have experienced in similar matters, provided of course, that they are not toobusy and that their case was somewhat similar.

The tax bug started biting the day a favorable decision was handed down by thehighest court in the State of New Jersey - the Court of Errors and Appeals. This courtgave so broad and liberal a decision that one prosecutor was forced to call in hispolice chiefs and advise them that they could no longer molest coin operated devicesexcept where gambling was definitely proved.

In the very same breath, this same prosecutor urged every community under hisjurisdiction to place an extremely high tax on coin machines, so that they would notbe able to appear in any too great numbers in each community, and that the few thatwould be able to operate under such high license fees would be under the constant sur-vei lance and complete control of the police.

The very first city to take advantage of this "advice" voted a yearly license feeof |500 for each pin game. The next city voted $250. per year per pin game license.Another city is now considering obtaining $350. per year for each game. And so itgoes. Coinmen who were starting to buy used machines to see whether the public stillliked to ploy them, have been stopped cold in their tracks. They have been thrownback on their haunches and haven't recovered as yet.

And. while all this was happening, a frantic appeal came to Ihe Cash Box from anoted coinman in the City of Omaha, where this city’s Comptroller had suddenly suggest-ed to the City Commissioners that new and higher license fees be instantly placed intoeffect on coin operated equipment working in that city.

In his report he called coin machines "gold mines". He recommended that the pingame license be increased from $15. per year to $150. per year, phonos from $5, peryear to $50. per year and that cigarettes be taxed at the rate of 1^ per pack. 'This,he claimed* would help raise a tremendous amount of money, practically enough to coverwhatever deficit this city faced in its 1945 budget.

He did not stop to think that such high and inequitable license fees would prac-tically rid this city of the very machines he hoped would help finance the deficit. Hedid not stop to think that every cigarette machine operator in his city would be facedwith tremendous expense to change equipment to accommodate this additional 1^ per pack, hor the expense that wholesalers of cigarettes would also be put thru to paste thesetax stamps on each pack.. This would naturally increase the overhead of these firmsand. thereby decrease their actual earning power which would mean less money to cityin income taxes. And therefore he would be taking money from one pocket which belong-ed in another and gain absolutely nothing so doing.

Half the pin games in Omaha would have to shut down for they could not pay $3. perweek in taxes. Phonos, too, would face a great loss of locations where the extra $1.per week keeps them going and which would now have to be paid to the City of Omaha inlicense fees for the year - and in advance.

v fveraE® 00il™an would have to pay out $15,000 in cash to the City of Omaha for

his 1 0 pin game route before he could even operate his 100 games. It would mean thatthe average 100 phono route operator would have to advance $5000. before he started outon his route to try and get that money back somehow. And, as all in this industryrealize, most of these routes would have to be severely cut down to only those loca-tions which could cover such a heavy tax.

The Cash Box once again urges the men in this industry, this week, just as it didtwo. weeks ago, and just as it has done for many, many weeks in the past, to get togeth-er into a National Tax Council, and thereby prevent exactly what has already happenedin a great many cities thruout the nation in addition to what is happening in NewJersey and in Omaha, Nebraska. Remember - IT CAN HAPPEN IN YOUR CITY, TOO.

u\Q INTOONSIhe Cointoon which appeared on the November 14, 1944 issue was created as a help tocoinmen. The Cash. Box used this "Cointoon" without any advance ballyhoo or notificationto the trade. It is seeking the reaction of the trade to this idea.

For a great many months The Cash Box has planned to introduce just such "Cointoons'rom time to time, to help benefit everyone concerned with this industry. Ihe plan

,

aC°, e & ch Cointoon of this nature is to have coinmen and their employees show them

to their location owners so as to help stimulate a closer relationship as well as abetter understanding of the value of coin operated equipment.

“Talking Out Loud”P/NS GO UP INIRVINGTON , N. J.

IRVINGTON, N. J.—The first city

in Essex County to see pin gamesonce again, after the favorable de-

cision of the Court of Errors andAppeals, was Irvington.

Harry Rose, former police officer

of this city7

, and well known coin

machines operator, installed 26 pingames this past week, obtaining the

licenses at the old fee of S5 per year.

This has greatly heartened all coin-

men in this most populous countyin this state. The general belief is

that other cities in this county herewill follow.

Newark operators are already get-

ting set to place pins. The belief is

that this city will once again proveto be the leading center for these

machines.

At the present time ops are en-

couraged by the fact that officials in

Irvington made no move to increase

fees. It is hoped that Newark w'ill

follow along the same lines and will

not increase its license fee.

ALL RECORD FIRMSNOW AT PEACEWITH PETRILLO

NEW YORK—After refusing Presi-

dent Roosevelt’s request to allow themanufacture of records to start onceagain, James C. Petrillo head of theAmerican Federation of Musicians, won his point, and the remainingrecord firms have now settled withhim to pay his union a royalty oneach and every new record theymake.

RCA-Victor is reported to havestarted recording immediately this

past Sunday (November 12, 1944)after having been stopped from mak-ing new records for over 27 months.

The hope thruout this industry is

that the trade will now at least beable to obtain records and also at

wholesale prices as formerly. Atpresent not only are all leadingphono operators destitute of recordsbut are actually paying retail pricesto obtain whatever they can.

Perhaps Mr. Petrillo can help curethis situation.

MAIR STARTS NEWFINANCE COMPANY

NEW YORK — Edmand F. Mair,

known as "Ted” to the nation’s lead-

ing manufacturers and distributors

from Coast to Coast, has organized

his own specialized finance companyfor the music industry7

. It will be

known as "Music Acceptance Corpo-

ration”. Ted prefers that the trade

call it the "MAC Company7”.

In addition to coin operatedphonographs, the MAC Companywill offer financing of higher pricedradio and television sets, pianos, andtheatre and church organs.

Music Acceptance Corporation’snew officers will be open for businesson December 31st at 134 NorthLaSalle Street, Chicago, on the 20thfloor.

Meanwhile, Ted can be reached at

'his personal office at the ChathamHotel in this City7

, which is one ofthe gathering places for the membersof the industry.

Thanksgiving, 1944...There’s a lot to be thankful for this year. The average

coin machines man has come thru the most trying period

in all coin machine history — and with flying colors.

Many who believed, in ’41, that this business would

last three, and at the most six months, are pleasantly

surprised to find themselves richer and in better position

than ever before.

Machines of all kinds have continued to be just as

popular as ever with the general public. And an era of

greater liberality is arising so that the trade faces the great

possibility of definitely establishing itself as the out-

standing division of America’s great entertainment field.

Thru gasoline and tire rationing, lack of parts and

supplies, lack of new machines, thru government control,

taxes, taxes and more taxes, lack of records, lack of mer-

chandise of all kinds, this industry carries on, gaining

ever greater acceptance and recognition, winning ever morefriends, enjoying the certainty of future prosperity.

Tes, there’s a great deal for which every coin machine

man can be thankful this Thanksgiving, 1944.

EVANS BUYS 'PACES RACES'

'

CHICAGO, ILL.—Outstanding news is contained in a statement madejointly by Richard W. Hood, head of H. C. Evans & Company, and E. W.Pace, president of Pace Manufacturing Co., Inc., advising the industrythat the Evans organization has purchased Paces Races, widely knownhorse race game.

The sale, it is reported, com-prised the transfer of all patentsand copyright patents. Includedwere all tools, dies, jigs, patternsand other real and abstract proper-ties, thus conferring upon H. C.Evans & Company the exclusiverights to manufacture Paces Racesand its component parts.

Of the transaction, Mr. Pacestated: "I am sure the trade willbe pleased to learn that Evans is

now the exclusive manufacturer ofPaces Races. I do not believe thatthere is another company in thecountry more capable of continuingand reinforcing the tradition ofquality behind this machine. I

know the caliber of Dick Hood andhis staff, and Evans’ record of pastsuccesses points to a great futurefor the game.”

Speaking for H. C. Evans &Company, Richard W. Hood de-clared that the purchase of PacesRaces arose from a desire tobroaden his company’s scope ofservice to the operating field. "Post-

war plans call for the productionof a new model Races machine tobe called Evans Super DeLuxeRaces, embodying the proven basicprinciples that have made Racesone of the most stable types ofequipment ever built.” Mr. Hoodstated, "the new Races will incor-porate about 50 additional features, among them a new improved coinhead and dramatically streamlinedstyling. The high standards forwhich Evans has been noted fornearly 50 years will be strictly

maintained in the production ofSuper DeLuxe Races.”

"Until the go-ahead signal onmanufacture of the new model is

received,” Mr. Hood advised, "let

it be understood that there are nonew Paces Races available, nor can

any machines offered under similar

names be other than old, wornmechanisms built into new cabinets.

Not only new Races, but also newmechanisms and new parts can bemade only by Evans. The trade will

be informed when such units will

again be manufactured.

WAGGENER PRESIDENT OF CMACCHICAGO — The Board ofDirectors of the Coin MachineAcceptance Corporation has an-nounced the appointment of RobertM. Waggener as President succeed-ing Edmand P. Mair who resignedrecently to form his own business.

In a statement released to the

press, Mr. Waggener paid tribute

to Mr. Mair’s leadership in organiz-

ing and assisting the Coin MachineAcceptance Corporation to its pre-

sent prominence as a specialized

credit and financing agency for

manufacturers and distributors of

coin operated machines.

"The policies of CMAC will notchange”, he said, "CMAC will con-

tinue to furnish all assistance pos-

sible to manufacturers and distribu-

tors of coin operated machineswhich vend merchandise and music. We have been and will continue to

make it possible for the manu-facturer and distributor to concen-

trate his efforts on production andmerchandising. With sufficient

funds at his command to increase

and maintain production, greater

profits naturally follow.”Mr. Waggener expressed his be-

lief in a great future for the coin

machine industry but he stressed

the need of restraining the generalimpression held by many peoplethat the industry is a "get-rich-

quick proposition”.

MAYOR LAGUARDIASCORES WPB FORALLOWING MACHS.PARTS MFR. TO BERESUMED

NEW YORK—In his regular weeklybroadcast (Sunday, November 12)Mayor F. H. LaGuardia of this city

jumped on Julius A. Krug, WPBChairman, regarding the fact that

he was now allowing parts for"gaming machines” to be manu-factured.

LaGuardia, broadcasting over thecity owned radio station to NewYork’s public, stated that this city

was unable to obtain the release

of materials badly needed for its

hospitals and other activities, butWPB was willing to help out the

"mechanical thieves” by releasing

materials for the renovation of

"gaming machines”.

The Mayor revealed that he hadtaken this matter up with WPB andhad been informed that that bodyhad no legal power to control the

renovation or repair of gamingmachines "if materials and man-power are not in short supply”. TheMayor claimed that ample powerexisted in this agency to prevent the

use of such material.

"I do not know who gave youthat advice”, he said, addressing his

remarks directly to Julius A. Krugchairman of ffie War ProductionBoard. "Maybe this fellow wearsspats and has striped trousers anda cutaway coat. But I tell you heis a tinhorn at heart. ' I think youhave some tinhorns around you, Mr.Krug, and you had better do as I do:

grab them by the back of the neck

and kick them out. This order, Mr.Krug, is a disgrace.”

MFRS TO BANQUETSEN. CAPEHART

CHICAGO—Rumors are circulating

about this city that the coin machines

manufacturers may get together to

arrange for a huge banquet andcelebration to Senator Homer E.

Capehart of Packard ManufacturingCorp., Indianapolis, Ind.

The trade here is of the belief

that this gesture would be most fit-

ting for the members of this industry.

As yet no official announcementshave been forthcoming from manu-facturing leaders here in regards to

dates or actual facts as to such a

banquet.

A great many thruout the trade

will want to be present, leaders here

state, and these men hope that ar-

rangements will be made far enoughin advance to allow them to attend.

NAVY NEEDS GAMES

CHICAGO—Once again in keepingwith the appeal made to all the trade

in this past week’s issue. The CashBox urges all coinmen, everywherein the nation, to arrange to ship at

least one old game, an old phono,an old gun, or any other machine,

to the U. S. Navy’s Radio Training

School in this city.

Ship all machines to: Com-

mander W. C. Eddy, TJ. S.

Naval Training School, 65

THE CONFIDENTIAL PRICE LISTSAN EXCLUSIVE MERCHANDISING SERVICE FOR THE COIN MACHINES INDUSTRY ISSUED

EVERY WEEK BY: THE CASH BOX, 381 FOURTH AVENUE, NEW YORK 16, N. Y.

FOREWORDMany times, wide differences appear in the high and low prices of certain equipment. Like any true reporter TheConfidential Price Lists can only feature the market prices as they are quoted. The Confidential Price Lists act exactly

the same as the market quotation board at the Stock Exchange—posting the prices exactly as they are quoted for

the past week, regardless of how much they may seem to be out of line. Some machine prices do not changefor months. The Confidential Price Lists, rather than show no price, retain the last known quotations for suchequipment so that the subscriber at least has the last known quoted prices as a basis to work with. Prices

continue to be very widely divergent these days. Someone on the West Coast may feel a certain machine worth$150.00 whereas someone on the East Coast may think it worth but $75.00. Of course, condition, serial, appearance, demand, territory, quantity, etc., must all be taken into consideration. The Confidential Price Lists report eachquotation exactly as it is made and depend on the subscriber to make average price adjustment to fit the peculiarities

of his own territory.

METHODThe Confidential Price Lists are to be read as follows: First price listed is lowest price for the week; Second price

listed is highest price for the past week. Where only one price appears this should be considered lowest price.

CODECHECK THIS CODE CAREFULLY. BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH EACH ONE OF THE CODE NUMBERS ANDWHAT THEY SIGNIFY. THESE CODE NUMBERS APPEAR IN FRONT OF THE NAME OF EACH MACHINE.

1. MEANS PRICE WENT UP.

2. MEANS PRICE WENT DOWN.

3. MEANS MACHINE JUST ADDED TO LIST.

4 MEANS PRICES WENT UP AND DOWNDURING THE PAST WEEK

5. MEANS PRICES REMAINED SAME AS INLAST PRICE LISTS.

A MEANS NO PRICES QUOTED FORPAST TWO WEEKS

7 MEANS NO PRICES QUOTED FORPAST THREE WEEKS

8. MEANS NO PRICES QUOTED FORPAST FOUR WEEKS OR LONGER

IMPORTANTMachines underlined mean these were most active

in trading the past week.
