Tomorrow evening sees the conclusion of the 2014 World Cup as Germany and Argentina do battle at the

Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. Germany are looking for their fourth World Cup title after wins in 1954, 1974

and 1990 while Argentina are out for their third title following triumphs in 1978 and 1986. Our World Cup

expert explores the stats for the big one in Brazil this summer.

The 2014 World Cup Final will be the 21st time that Germany and Argentina have met on the football

field. The South Americans have the better record in previous matches having won nine of the 20,

while Germany have won six and there have been five draws.

This will be the third time that the sides have met in the World Cup Final with both teams having

taken one win each. Argentina claimed the ’86 title 3-2 and Germany responded in kind four years

later in Italy with a 1-0 victory.

The teams have met another four times at World Cup competitions too with Germany winning two

and drawing two. The second of the draws came at Quarter Final stage of the 2006 tournament in

Germany and the hosts claimed a penalty shootout victory.

The last two World Cup meetings have seen Germany score five goals and Argentina one. All time

World Cup goalscorer Miroslav Klose has three goals in these two games against Argentina.

Their last meeting came in August 2012 when Argentina claimed a 3-1 victory in Frankfurt with

Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria adding to a Sami Khedira own goal.

The previous 20 games have totalled 56 goals with both teams netting 28 times against the other.

At the 2014 World Cup it is the Germans who lead the goalscoring stakes with 17 goals to their

name. Argentina have scored ten fewer goals at seven.

Germany have converted 2.8 goals per match and have had 70% of their shots on target, ahead of

Argentina in both categories. The South Americans have scored just 1.2 goals per game and hit the

target 60% of the time.

Despite this Argentina create more chances per match at 15.8 – with the Germans lagging behind at

14.7 – making the European side the more effective in front of goal.

The South Americans have a better defensive record with three goals conceded and four clean

sheets in their six matches. Germany have just three clean sheets and have conceded on four

occasions.

Germany are the dirtier of the two sides having conceded 71 fouls, seven more than Argentina, but

the South Americans have been carded more often with six yellow cards to four for the Europeans.

The Germans are a hard working side with them running 116km per match and completing 3421

passes over the course of the World Cup. Argentina have run 113.9kms each game and have found

their team-mates with a pass on 2928 occasions, 493 times fewer than their World Cup Final

opponents.

Both sides have played one match at the Maracanã once before this World Cup Final with Germany

beating France 1-0 in the Quarter Finals and Argentina beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-1 in their

opener.

There have been four other matches played at the Maracanã this summer, with the World Cup Final

being the seventh, and final, game in Rio de Janeiro. There have been very few goals at this stadium

with just nine goals in the six matches.

Five of the six games have seen fewer than 2.5 goals and both sides fail to score, with Bosnia’s late

goal against Argentina the only time that both sides have found the net at the Maracanã.

Five of the nine goals scored at the Rio based stadium have been scored in the second half of

matches. Germany have scored nine of their 15 normal time goals in the first half of matches, as well

as two in extra time, while Argentina have four of seven in the first 45 minutes and one in extra

time.

Thoughts:

As the GR88.com Germany v Argentina betting odds show, it is the Germans that are favoured to claim

their fourth World Cup title this weekend. They have the better attacking threat with more goals and more

chances created from a better percentage of shots testing the goalkeepers. They also are the harder

working side with more passes and more distance covered so our World Cup expert feels that the Germans

are certainly deserving of being the favourites to become the 2014 World Cup champions.
