    STAFF WRITER

A lot has changed since Sal Zizzo bought Trysting Place Pub

in Menomonee Falls three decades ago, but the most impor-

tant things—offering great food and drinks at affordable

prices and giving the community a beloved hang-out—have

    remained the same.

Simply put by Zizzo: “I would describe us as a very large

sports bar with very good food. We welcome people from age

1 to 100, from every walk of life. You see everybody here. It’s

     just amazing.”

As he celebrates his 30-year business anniversary, Zizzo

looks back on an exciting journey that started when he

earned an associate’s degree in marketing and business

administration from Waukesha County Technical College. His

sights on being a business owner himself, Zizzo purchased the

pub and grill from the Trysting Place’s previous owners in

1985. While working at Roundy’s Foods, Zizzo had also been

bartending one night per week at Trysting Place, then locat-

ed at the Village Mall shopping center. One night he pulled up

to the financially struggling pub and said to himself, “Gee,

    maybe I could do this.”

And he did. Business had not been booming when Zizzo

took over so he made it his mission to breathe new life into

    the operation.

“I came up with a lot of specials—25-cent tap beers onMondays, 50-cent shots on Tuesdays, $1 bottled beer on

Wednesdays, 25-cent tacos on Thursdays—and I was just

there a lot,” he said. “I greeted everyone, got to know people

one customer at a time. The business was doing extremely well

by the time we moved to our current location.”

Zizzo remained at the original site for four years until pur-

chasing DeQuardo’s Pizza and moving to where he is now at

    N71 W12980 Appleton Avenue.

“I bought this space, closed down the pizzeria, remodeled

and officially reopened (as Trysting Place Pub) May 14, 1989,”

    he said.

Never one to settle, Zizzo set his sights on the bigger pic-

    ture and when the grocery

    store next door to him

    closed in 1991, he purchased

    that space as well, expand-

ing the pub from 4,000 to

8,000 square feet, and whennight clubs were in their

    heyday, Zizzo ran SMZeee’s

Night Club as part of his

    business until 1995.

    “I always knew the night

    club was a temporary thing

    so when we closed that

    down, we remodeled it into

    what is now Trysting Place

and the old space is our ban-

quet room that holds up to

    150 people,” Zizzo said.

    Although the business has

    been through much meta-

    morphosis, the core compo-

    nents have not been altered,

    he noted.

“We still do the same spe-

cials we did 30 years ago,

the prices have just gone up a bit,” Zizzo said with a laugh.

Weekly specials include tap beer specials on Monday; “Pizza

and Pitcher” specials on Tuesday; bottled beer specials

Wednesday; Mexican Night on Thursdays and fish fry on

    Friday. A lunch buffet is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Monday through Friday. For $6, one can enjoy all-you-can-eat

soup and salad and for $11 the entire buffet with a hot cart

item (which changes daily) can be purchased. Fish i

menu from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every Friday. The gene

is quite extensive, featuring DeQuardo’s Pizza, bur

    sandwiches, salads, dinner items

steaks and ribs, a homemade soup of

    and an award-winning chili.

    “People keep coming back because

a good product,” Zizzo said, adding

business also does catering for just aevent.

Community is key in Zizzo’s busine

and the pub owner loves staying acti

    area as a long-standing member

    Wisconsin Restaurant Associatio

Wisconsin Tavern League and the Me

Falls Community Chamber, and by sp

    community.

    “Menomonee Falls and the surr

areas have been so good to me,” he sa

I have had employees that have been

    10, 15, 20 years. A great staff is such

gral part of one’s business so I woul

    thank them as well.”

For the month of September, in ce

of 30 years in business, a different, e

selected menu item will be offered a

    cent off its regular price.

“Wow, 30 years, it’s amazing how time flies,” sa

“I am just glad we have done so well and that I have

    great people around me.”

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

Dear Dr. Winter, I have a bad mouth! I haveloose teeth, root tips, bleeding gums and badmouth odor. I really want to have a smile I can beproud of for once in my life.

I am on a fixed income so I do not have all themoney for a glamorous makeover but I amhopeful you can help me. I saw your website andrealize you have helped thousands of patientswith problems similar to mine. Please let meknow how you can help me. Ann

Dear Ann, when people are in pain or ashamedof their mouth the first step is always the hardest!Since we see people with severe dental issues youcan be assured that you will never be judged. Theconcepts that Dr. Winter lectures on include"Upgradeable Dentistry" which allows people topick a plan that will sequentially help peopleimprove their smiles at a pace they can afford.

If you must have dentures we may offer deluxedentures with soft liners to give you the ultimatein comfort. Or we may offer small diameterimplants to help hold your dentures firmly inplace without the need for messy adhesives.

From there we discuss whether we can performgrafting to improve the amount of bone you haveso that implants can be done within 8-12 monthswhile avoiding more expensive graftingprocedures. Perhaps we can discuss a path where2-4 implants are placed each year and you wouldgo from a removable implant retained denture toa "fixed bridge". That option would allow you to

have your teeth in your mouth 24/7 without theembarrassment of removing them at night. So having the flexibility to discuss dynamic

treatments is what we offer at Hampton DentalAssociates. You can go towww.hamptondentalassociates.com and see ourpatient testimonials, read our blog and visit oursocial media! We would love it if you would visit:https://www.facebook.com/HamptonDentalAssociates

Fall and winter can be tough onyour home and your wallet. As temper-atures drop, chances are your furnacewill be working overtime. This results intwo things - greater energy consump-tion and higher heating bills.

Try these easy DIY projects to helpcut down on energy loss and expenses:

    1. Replace worn weather-strippingaround doors and windows. Wornweather-stripping can create drafts andlet heated air out, stressing your fur-nace and compromising your comfort.

Replacing it takes little time and is alow-cost, high-impact solution.

    2. Top up or replace old insulation inyour attic. A poorly insulated attic is aprimary source of energy loss. Also, over time, some types of insulation cansettle and compact, allowing heat toescape through gaps. Experts recom-mend topping up or replacing atticinsulation with a dimensionally stablebatt insulation like Roxul Comfortbatt.Aim for an R-value of at least R-50 or adepth of roughly 16 inches.

    3. Insulate basement headers andwalls. Uninsulated basement headersare common, especially in older homes. They can act as a gateway for heated airto escape. Fixing the problem is fast andeasy. Simply cut Comfortbatt mineralwool insulation to fit the cavity andcompress into place. Doing thisthroughout your basement will preventheat loss and can potentially save hun-dreds of dollars each year.

    4. Caulk around windows. Cracks andcrevices are a source of heat loss. They

can also be an entry poiwater/moisture, as well as forcome insects. Preventative nance, such as caulking, can ienergy efficiency and preventrepairs.

    5. Change your furnace filteit a point to check your furnacmonthly, always changing it wdirty. This will improve the perfoand efficiency of your furnaceyou money.

    Four easy tips forbasement makeover

    BY SCOTT MCGILLIVRAY

The start of a new season is the per-fect time to check some tasks off of your "to-do" list - whether it's to get inshape or tackle at-home projects. If you're planning on making some simplebut effective changes at home, here aresome tips on how to give your base-ment a total 180-degree makeover.

Soundproof itInstalling acoustic insulation is the

perfect excuse to crank up the sub-woofer, host a get-together or let thekids run wild. Soundproofing is theultimate solution to maximize yourbasement's peace, quiet and privacy.Industry experts suggest using Roxul

Safe n' Sound, which effectivelyabsorbs sound and is easy to work with.

Out with the old, in with a floorInstalling a new floor or updating

the existing one can improve the over-all comfort level and look of your base-ment. Many unfinished basements havebasic concrete flooring, which is coldyear-round. Flooring options are end-less - hardwood, laminate, cork andBerber flooring all add warmth to abasement bedroom or TV room; playmats are great for kids' playrooms; andcarpets are perfect to make any roomfeel more comfy and welcoming.

Get creative with paintTransform the dull and boring space

into an inviting entertainment oasis ora colorful playroom with a simple coatof paint. When considering the paint,

think about what color will complimentyour existing furniture. To add somedrama, consider adding depth and visu-al interest to your space with a differ-ent colored accent wall.

Accessorize itThrow pillows, rugs, lighting, and

artwork are simple additions that canimmediately enhance or change yourbasement's look and feel. Pot lights canmodernize, while art work and throwpillows can add a splash of color. Decideon a theme and color scheme for yourroom and keep your eye out for staplepieces that will make it feel like anentirely new space.

    HOME IMPROVEMENTH O M E

     f a l l

Home improvement projects rangefrom small scale undertakings that canbe tackled in a single weekend to largeremodels that can take several monthsto complete. While no two projects arethe same, every home improvementproject demands that homeowners dipinto their pockets and spend somemoney.

Much like the scale of projects variesgreatly, so, too, do the financial com-

mitments required of homeowners tomake those projects a reality. But nomatter the size of the project, home-owners can find ways to stretch theirbudgets without sacrificing the qualityof their improvements.

    • Do your homework. Before youdecide to make changes to your home,it's best to first do some research intoany potential projects you're consider-ing. Many homeowners have decided to

dive into a project before they fullyrealize its scope and cost, and going inblind can bust a budget, turning whatmight have seemed like a relatively sim-ple project into a money pit.

Understanding just what a projectentails and how much it's likely to costcan give homeowners an idea of whatthey can afford and where they mightbe able to stretch their budgets. Forexample, if you want to replace your

kitchen countertops but can'tengineered quartz countertopmight be able to find a less exalternative, such as tile, that y just as much. But it's best to rsuch alternatives before you dereplace your existing counteryou can't find a less expensive tive, you might want to postpproject until you can grow your

    19/28

But starting the project without firstgrasping its true cost is a recipe for dis-aster, so do your homework before youfind your toolbox and start working.

    • Build unforeseen expenses intoyour budget. Another way to stay with-in your budget is to include budget-busting unforeseen expenses into thebudget from the get-go. Whether you'redoing the project yourself or paying acontractor, nearly every home improve-ment project will present some unfore-seen, and costly, hurdles. For example, you might find mold inside the wallswhen you're converting a basement, and it can cost a pretty penny to make

that mold go away. If you go into theproject expecting such hurdles, thenthe financial sting of addressing themwon't prove too great a burden. But if the mold catches you and your budgetcompletely off guard, you might be

forced to overextend that budget ormake sacrifices elsewhere in order tocomplete the project. Build some con-tingency money, including permit andpermit fees, into your home improve-ment project to safeguard against suchunforeseen issues.

    • Get to work. If you're hiring a con-tractor, speak to him or her before sign-ing a contract to see if there is any-where you can pitch in to keep thelabor costs low. You might be able topitch in during the demolition phase, saving the cost of paying your contrac-tor's workers to tear down walls orremove debris you can just as easilyremove yourself. Another way to pitchin is to do the end-of-day cleanup your-

self. Any role you play with regard tolabor will likely need to be negotiatedupfront, but you can save yourself asubstantial amount of money on labor if you're willing to get your hands dirty.

    • Determine if piecemeal is the mostaffordable option. Sometimes it makessense to tackle one project at a time, while other times you might want tocombine projects to save on the cost of materials. For instance, if your ultimategoal is to install wood flooring through-out your home, determine if it makesmore financial sense to install the floor-ing all at once rather than doing one ortwo rooms at a time. You might save bybuying all of your materials at oncerather than buying a small amount of materials several times over the nextseveral years.
