What started as a passing sentenceon a Facebook page turned into a pub-lic statement of support for police inGermantown and across the nationSept. 7.
"To put it quite simply, I'm over-whelmed," Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell said during remarks to morethan 50 people gathered at the PoliceDepartment parking lot. "This is veryheart-warming."
Hoell said that while he was typi-cally comfortable speaking in public, heinitially had difficulty speaking"because we don't expect this, but weappreciate it. Being a law enforcement
officer is not just an occupation, it'ssomething that we love to do -- it's acalling, it's a way of life. We don't dothis job eight hours a day and thencome home and take off the uniformand we're not police officers any more -- it's 24/7."
Hoell said the negative reactions tolaw enforcement affects officers fami-lies more than the officers who train
and prepare for their work. He thenoffered an example of how being anofficer is "a way of life" Hoell notedthat when his family enters a restau-rant, he sits so that he can observewhat is going on.
"And I'm out to dinner," he said.Referring to the death of an officer
in Harris County, Texas, who was killedwhile pumping gas, Hoell said, "that'swhen I think it really hits home for ourfamilies -- that someday, our best is notdoing to be good enough. It just simplyis not."
He also cited the death of an officerin Fox Lake, Illinois -- who was a month
away from retirement -- and said "that'swhen it hits home for our families."
The gathering was prompted by aposting by Renee Welnak on theGermantown Police DepartmentFacebook page just under a week earli-er. The event also occurred on the sameday as the memorial service for the FoxLake officer, Lt. Joe Gliniewicz, inAntioch, Ill.
"This is an amazing turnout to showsupport for our officers who put theirlives on the line for us every day,"Welnak said. She said a police sergeant

he weather is shifting, school is back in session, and the holiday season is just around thecorner. St Boniface School is proud to announce the Seventh Annual Dutch Apple PieSale. Each mouthwatering pie is handmade by over 500 wonderful volunteers. Over 2 days
are spent peeling, coring, and slicing freshly picked apples from Pine Hill Orchard in Richfield. After the apples are prepared, they move on to quality control. Here each apple slice is meticu-lously checked, insuring every pie is filled with only the best slices. Finally the piece of resist-ance...brown sugar crumb topping is added. The pies are wrapped and boxed, ready to be enjoyed.
Deanna Meyer is the mastermind behind this epic fundraiser. Deanna wanted something to set St Boniface apart, to offer a quality product most everyone would enjoy, and finally to support localbusinesses whenever possible. Apple pies were the perfect choice. This wouldn't be a simple proj-ect, but Deanna knew it would succeed. Months of work go into preparing for this sale: from organ-izing hundreds of volunteers, to brainstorming ways to beat the previous year's goal, to orderingquality supplies, and finally pulling off the production of thousands of de licious Dutch Apple Pies.Every person involved is needed and appreciated. Thank You!
Important Apple Pie Sale information:• All pie orders have to be placed by September 21, 2015. • Cost of an apple pie is $12.00• Orders can be placed with any student or faculty of St. Boniface School or you can call the schooloffice directly at 262-628-1955.• Pies will be available starting October 16, 2015. in Milwaukee she personally knew andhis wife have received death threats. She said that was the reason behind thepost asking people to come to the PoliceDepartment to pray for officers inGermantown and nationwide.
"It has to be amazingly stressful andI greatly admire those who deal with iton a daily basis," Welnak said. Sheadded she was surprised by the turnout.
"I thought it would be me and fivepeople standing by the flagpole andmaybe the police wouldn't know wewere here. It's amazing that our com-munity turned out this great," Welnaksaid.
She also said the condition of thecountry was another reason why shesuggested the event.
"The racial tension is soaring, theextreme hate, the killing of innocentlives in law enforcement, and we needto turn back to God," Welnak said, before quoting a verse from the Book of John in the New Testament, verse 5:13.
"God is the one who can protectthese officers and the officers in our
country and we need to pray for themon a regular basis," Welnak said.
Police Chaplain Greg Young said it isa difficult time to be in law enforce-ment. He recalled being in Flint,Mich.teaching a week earlier. In a nearbycommunity, a funeral was being held foran officer who was killed. Later thatday, he heard of the death of the offi-cer in Fox Lake, Ill. He then offered a
prayer."We gather this evening to support
our law officers in Germantown, ourgreater communities and communitieseverywhere. We pause to pray and say,'Thank you.' We are thankful to thosewho put on the uniform, go into harmsway to serve and protect, to keep allour communities safe," Young said."God, we gather to lift up all the law
enforcement officers, those in recentdays and in months and years past whohave made the ultimate sacrifice -- welift up their families and friends andtheir department brothers and sisterseverywhere who mourn their loss."
Resident Tim Riesterer offered acommunity prayer during the event. The names of all the Germantown policeofficers were then read off to a nonstopstream of applause from attendees.
Following comments by Hoell,Nathan Boyd led attendees in singing"Amazing Grace."
Germantown Village President DeanWolter then quoted President RonaldReagan from a May 1981 speech regard-ing the role of law enforcement in civil
society."Over the generations the protection
of the individual and the pursuit of jus-tice has been the responsibility of ourpolice officers. They stand as theguardians of the fragile thread of orderand civility that separates a civilizedsociety from mankind's barbarouspast," Wolter read, quoting Reagan."Police shoulder the trust of their fellowcitizens and their daily effort to provide
the protection and service that areincreasingly important to our nation. For without law and order, our societywould soon crumble."
Wolter then added: "Now is the timeto show open and active support for ourpolice officers and the work they per-form. Not just during days of cere-monies like this, but every day of everyweek. If we do not show support for ourofficers when it is needed most, fromwhere will the candidate for tomorrowbe found? What will society look like inthe future without a community sup-ported by a viable and committed policeforce."
The program ended with blue andblack balloons being released into theair, with the black balloons representingofficers nationwide who were killed inthe line of duty, followed by a closingprayer by David Berghius, a pastor atCrossway Church.
Connie Wolfe, a friend of Welnak, said afterward that they thought it wasgoing to be a small event, but it kept"growing and growing and growing."When Wolfe and Welnak were contactedby a local television station about the
event, they knew the event wato be bigger than anticipated.
Among those at the eveMenomonee Falls resident Lowwho said he heard about the evea posting on a Facebook pagesaid he and a friend have beensupporters "for a long time" and to attend the Germantown eveadded that he participated in a "academy" program where he rodepolice officer on a night shift.

ty from potential damage by trimmingovergrown trees and shrubs to preventice-laden branches from thrashingagainst electrical wires and your home'sexterior. Drain/shut off any exteriorfaucets and sprinkler systems to preventfreezing. Ensure rain or snow drainsaway from the house to avoid founda-

roof for shingles that are warped, dam-aged or even missing to prevent a future
leak. Use roofing cement and a caulkinggun to seal joints where water couldpenetrate, such as around the chimney, skylights or vent pipes. Make sure thatyour gutters and downspouts are secure-ly fastened. Downspouts should extendat least five feet away from the home toprevent flooding.
