    he University of Arizona (UofA) Department of German Studiesgraduate programs offer intensive mentoring in German Studies, a

    trans-disciplinary and international education, and professionaldevelopment for a diversity of career optionsboth at the MA andPhD level. Our Facultyteach and research in fields ranging from filmand media studies to medieval culture, from gender and womensstudies to literary stylistics, from applied linguistics to pedagogy and

    assessment, from German-Jewish relations to German-Turkishhistory, from music and political cabaret to intellectual history andSturm und Drang.

    Joint or Dual PhD / D.Phil. in

    Transcultural German Studies / DaF

    Masters-prepared students admitted to the Doctoral Program spendtheir second year of coursework in Germany, pursuing research withand alongside their colleagues at the Herder Institut of the Universityof Leipzig. Students have the option of pursuing a joint PhD course ofstudy, or a PhD / D. Phil. dual degree in Transcultural GermanStudies and Deutsch als Fremdsprache. The Arizona-Leipzig DoctoralProgram offers intensive mentoring around research methods,innovative teaching, and academic publishing/presenting. Students aresupported by multi-year TA-ships and fellowships.

    MA in German Culture & Literature

    Students who opt to pursue a Master of Arts Degree in GermanCulture and Literature finish their training within four semesters, wellprepared either for careers in diplomacy, translation, international

    relations, government, and public policy, or for further study incomparative literature, German studies, history, anthropology, andrelated fields. Students are supported by TA-ships and merit-basedfellowships.

    MA in Culture, Literature, & Pedagogy

    Students who opt to pursue a pedagogy-focused degree are wellequipped after four semesters for secondary school teaching (non-certified) and careers in higher education, as well as for future study inapplied linguistics, educational policy, and second language acquisitionand teaching (SLAT). Students are supported by TA-ships and merit-based fellowships.

    Arizonas unique 4/5-semester Masters Program in German Studies

    with Secondary Teaching Certification enables select students to applyto pursue a course of study with intensive focus on literature, culture,media, and pedagogy in the German context, while also obtainingtheir teaching credential for high school language teaching in the Stateof Arizona. While many certification programs nationwide come at ahigh personal financial burden, Arizonas program combines TeachingAssistantships in our Department with the course offerings of theSchool of Education, in order to offer students a financially sustainablepath towards a career as an in-state German teacher. Students aresupported by TA-ships and merit-based fellowships.
