The following list of conventional signs and abbreviations is reprinted

from a similar pamphlet compiled by the Second Section, General Suff (Topo-

graphy) of the American Expeditionary Forces. The conventional signs and

abbreviations in use on the French maps will hereafter be used on nil battle

maps; that is, maps used for the training of troops during the present emer-

gency, prepared in the United States. This pamphlet does not revoke or su-

persede "Conventional Signs, U. S. Army Maps" (W. D. Document 418 of

1912), nor the conventional signs published as Figures 48 to 67 in the

"Engineer Field Manual," which will continue to govern the Permanent

Military Maps of the United States
