GERIATRIC TREMOR SIMULATOR

Set-up Instructions: 1. Set up a tremor simulation station. Have participants work in

pairs and take turns to complete the simulation exercise while you control the Prospera Electronic Pulse Massager.

2. Each participant should wear the simulator for a minimum of three minutes to fully understand what it is like to live with a tremor. One participant should wear it while the other observes the movement. The tremor will be simulated through Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) impulses.

3. Prior to use, review the safety instructions included in the Prospera Electronic Pulse Massager Operating Manual.

Use Instructions: 1. Insert the 4 AAA batteries. (See Prospera Electronic Pulse Massager

Operating Manual for details.)

2. Insert the white pins from the EMS pad cable into the green EMS cable connectors (two total), one for each pad used.

3. Plug the EMS pad cable into the top-left-side cable jack of the Prospera Electronic Pulse Massager.

4. Clean participant’s skin with rubbing alcohol.

5. Adhere EMS pads to the participant’s skin. Place one in the middle of the forearm and the other in the middle of the upper arm, near the bicep. Either arm is acceptable. (See photos for placement.) The tremor sensation may vary slightly depending on where the EMS pads are adhered. Note: Do NOT adhere pads to skin or remove pads from skin while the Prospera Electronic Pulse Massager is turned on.

6. Locate the left-side dial on the Prospera Electronic Pulse Massager. Turn the dial to position #1. A "P" will appear on the display. Note: This step should be done by the instructor.

7. Press the BEAT button. The participant should begin to feel a slight beating sensation in their arm.

8. Use the left dial to increase intensity until the hand begins to tremble when resting on a table. If there is no beat felt, refer to the operating manual provided with the Prospera Electronic Pulse Massager device for further instructions.

9. Use the SPEED +/- buttons to increase or decrease speed of the tremor. Press repeatedly to increase or decrease to the desired level.

10. Follow the suggested activities in the curriculum to understand what geriatric patients with tremor conditions have to deal with on a daily basis.

11. Turn left dial off when the activities are complete.

12. Remove pads from the skin. Place on the plastic strip for storage or discard.

NOTE: The EMS pad heads will age over time and have less effect. See cleaning instructions on the next page to prolong the use of your EMS pads.

Cleaning Instructions: The Prospera Electronic Pulse Massager requires pads to stick the electrodes to the participant’s skin. These pads can get dirty and become hard to stick. This can happen for many reasons, but most commonly it's due to not cleaning the skin properly before applying the pads. The debris on skin and the body's natural oils can take away from the pads stickiness.

Eventually, the EMS pads adhesive will dry out and need to be replaced, but cleaning can prolong the usage. Before every use, check to make sure there is some stickiness (tac) to each gel pad. If there's no grip, clean it or replace it.

The EMS pads can be over-saturated due to sweating or high humidity. To avoid over saturation (too much water), rotate the pads used and do not use near water.

To Prolong Use of Each Pad:

• Use a damp cloth and gently wipe away the debris on the pad. Do not use a paper towel, napkin, or anything that can get stuck or tear.

• Use a clean toothbrush and brush it in one direction. This will fluff it and expose more of the stickiness.

• After use, allow pads to dry. Lay pads out, sticky side exposed, for 24 hours before reusing it.

• The self-adhering pads need to be hydrated. Put one drop of water on each electrode to hydrate. NOTE: Do not hold the pads under running water, this will cause over-saturation To avoid over-saturation, rotate the pads used.

Using Gels:

Gels may be applied to the EMS pads to help in conducting pulse to the skin. Electrode gels may extend the life of old pads. The electrode gel may help the pads last longer, but keep in mind that it is not a replacement for getting new pads.
