competition by FABD2015. Bellunoteam: Marco Semprebon

The main idea of the project for the construction of the winter shelter Fratelli Fanton is to bring out from the rock a stereometric volume, like a crystal stuck in the mountain. As for the crystals, the shape is the result of the process of slight deformations from the pure initial edge. Functional and structural needs contribute to the definition of the project. First, the choice of location: the “Forcella Marmarole”, identified as the ideal area, is characterized by its strategic compared to the network of paths that cross Marmarole. The chosen area is located on the southern slopes of the Cimon del Froppa, in a rocky formation emerging from the gravel that characterize the surrounding area. The mountain side is south facing and the site has a great view towards Auronzo. The program of the winter shelter includes a wide table, ten cots, of which three bunk and one over the table, and large glove compartment for the storage of mountain equipment. Access is placed on the south-east side for two main reasons: to allow an easy access without the need of further stairs, and to avoid direct exposure to slipping of the snow toward the valley. Furthermore, in order to solve to this possible situation of accumulation, the construction is rotated respect the direction of maximum slope of the mountain, so that to the slipping of the snow is opposed an edge and not a surface. The openings are facing the south, where it’s possible to enjoy an exciting view of the valley. Some plant systems are provided: a small photovoltaic plant, located on the south side, towards the valley, to ensure its operation even in case of snow’s precipitation or accumulation; a cistern for the supply of rainwater; a weather station. The structure of the winter shelter has self-supporting panels, type X-LAM, produced in the factory, transported by helicopter and assembled on site. The cover is composed of a double layer of crossed panels, for a total of four pieces. The inner cladding is in fir, as the fixed furniture that is integrated to the ambience, while the outer one is in aluminum red color, so as to be visible compared to the irregularity of the rock.

architettura della residenza del custode

competition “Casabella. Meno di 31”2014. Bologna

The project ARCu, “Architettura della Residenzadel Custode”, is based on two principles. The first isto offer a clear and efficient architectural responseto the need to put in relationship the more privatespaces, those dedicated to the home, with workspaces, conceived as the place of the activity of theguardian, where he can carry out his task of controland meet with maintenance workers or customers. For this reason two autonomous accesses areprovided, located at different levels. The mostpublic, at the basement level, is identified by theconcrete and provides an independent entranceto the workplace; while the private one can bereached at the ground floor through a winding pathamong the oaks, or from the car park behind. Thesecond principle consists in the graft of a solidin the slope, with the consequent articulation ofvolume, materiala and program. The relationshipwith the ground is defined by three heavyelements in concrete: a platform, surrounded by aconteinment wall, on which stands the basement(the workspace). Above this hard element, layslightly the house itself, whose projections expressthe discontinuity of the material, now the wood, and offer practical shelter from the weather. Inside, the residence is organized around the element ofvertical distribution. The stair is in fact the mediationbetween the rooms of the house, allowing toseparate the themselves, and, at the same time,to eliminate other distribution spaces. The verticalarticulation of space define the shape of the houseand the inclination of the pitched roof that, whileit manifest the inner complexity of the circulationsystem, on the other hand, setting the building as anew tile in the landscape, looks for a dialogue withthe rigid forms of the villa and the soft ones of thehills of Bologna.

Abitare e lavorare.

graduation project. 2nd level2013. Parisprof. Ilaria Valenteteam: Matteo Frati

In a piece of city with an industrial vocation, interested by a strong process of urban transformation, the project for the University Campus Condorcet is the occasion for a general redesign of the area, setting a regenerative logic. Particular attention was paid to the space of relation, either open or built, as an element able to define a certain cohesion between the existing and the new. The needs of the university, supported by a comparison with significant showcases and by the emergency of the context made it possible to define the terms of the program. Particular attention was paid to what has been identified as “Coeur Condorcet”, the cultural heart of the new campus. The principle of the new settlements is based on the release of a big soil for public use and on the attempt of ensure a consistent and recognizable order to the system of relation between the different fragments of the city. The free open space assumes the role of the engine of the urban regeneration. The project works on the connections of public open space and the foundational role that a unified design can have, which does not renounce to work to the urban scale. The great measure, a recurring theme in Paris, is recalibrated through relationship, intervals, and limits of built and open spaces. The built volume represent the front, the artificial wing, for the life of the community, staged in the wide public open space. The city gains new urban configuration, given by the reaction of the soil to the new settlement and the comparison between different sides. In the current time of instability, the elements and the measures involved, provide support to future developments of the area.

graduation project. 1st level2011. Fort Worthprof. Andrea Di Francoteam: Alberto Mariotti

The project area is located in Texas, Fort Worth, in the same place in which the Kimbell Art Museum was built, in a piece of city characterized by a regular urban grid, clearly evident in the rigid geometry of the isolates. The project works with the reinterpretation of some of the main elements identified in the building by Louis Kahn. In particular: a basically horizontal develop and a modular organization of space and structure. Starting from these issues, the project represent a reflection about the third dimension, principle almost missing in the area. From the needs of the functional program the architecture investigate the relationship between private and public space. This, that cannot be define only by a distinction of use, features the whole building, and the relation established with the context. A general section allow the control of the space between the two building. The most relevant elements of the museum, such as the portico and the patio, have been reinterpreted into a suspended wall and loggia. The first in order to organize the relation between inside and the outside, the second as a space of mediation between the rooms. Modularity is one of the most important issues of the Kimbell. This led to the articulation of full and void, particularly in one of the elevation. Behind the simplicity of the suspended wall, a more complex system of spaces is hidden, that contributes to emphasize the vertical movement. At the end of this, a terrace allows the only visible contact with the museum, a space of deep contemplation.

2012. Terniprof. Roberto Spagnoloteam: Alberto Mariotti, Milena Pencheva

The look on the landscape, an heterogeneous and fragmented sequence of situations that come to mind in an unpredictable way , was taken by the project as the main issue in order to identify the principles of the new research center for the company TerniResearch. The result is the reorganization of sequences of landscapes, collimation and visual targets, structured by the large courtyard open to the landscape. The building and courtyard, characterized by a clear walking itinerary, recognize the horizontality of the planimetric development, but take advantage of the topography in order feature inside space with slightly modified proportions. The research for material/perceptive comparison with the rough objects of the context, the attention to energetic sustainability, and the consideration of the life cycle of the materials used, have guided the choices towards the adoption of dry technological solutions, with the inclusion of lamellar structures in the most significant sides, compatible with the idea that the company TerniResearch wants to communicate, becoming a new benchmark for the green industry.

The work consists of the design of temporary accommodation , in order to host those who will work during the Universal Exhibition , ensuring the possibility of a future re-use. The project deals with the current main urban dynamics, from the point of view of their multiscalarity. In fact, as often happens in northern Italy peripheries, the project has to deal both with the infinite and dispersed aspect of the contemporary city, and both with the spatial qualities of an nearby context. According with the smart idea of a multicenter city-region really widespread and interconnected , the main theme developed, is the densification of soma urban areas, able to promote urban regeneration processes .We worked on the recovery of abandoned open spaces, inside the urban texture, and on their organization through the creation of a slow mobility network, able to relate to the existing heavy infrastructures. The new buildings form the set of this network, which is fixed in the center of Pero and connects it to the areas of the Universal Exhibition and the fair, giving back to the city, new requalified areas.

meiso no mori crematoriumformal analysis of the ceiling

2010. Kakamigaharaprof. Domenico D’Uvateam: Alessandro Menini

The work explores the formal features of the ceiling of the building. A 20 cm thick shell, apparently without any formal rule, covers and protects the spaces of the crematorium, giving rise to a fruitful relationship with the surrounding landscape. Actually, the research shows that the shape plays an important role and contributes decisively to fulfill the structural function. Matsuro Sasaki has used a complex algorithm to change the initial shape imagined by Toyo Ito, in order to design the best structural form, with the smallest possible bending stress and the minimum of strain energy and deformation. The formal analysis of the main sections, those between peak and peak, shows the variation of the first and second derivatives. When f’(x) = 0 there is an horizontal tangent inflection point, and therefore a point of maximum or minimum. When f’’ (x) = 0 we have an oblique tangent inflection point, and so a changing of concavity. The sensitivity analysis is the key to understand the generation of this non–rational surface. The sensitivity analysis uses the mechanical theory that minimizes strain energy in a structure to create a rational free-curved surface. The changing parameter is the z component of each little piece of the cover. Every piece reflected on each other, so by changing the z component we change the shape and the global strain energy effort. The final step is to simulate the logic algorithm used to generate this shape. In this algorithm there are different parameters including the shape that compete to the structural system. Shape is not the result of this algorithm. This study shows how the form may be intimately linked to the structure and functional program.

2014. Düsseldorf.collaboration with Stefano Semprebon designer.

The showroom in Düsseldorf is the third project desi-gned by the studio “stefano Semprebon designer” for the firm Thelen, after the headquarters in Nettetal and the one of Moers. The decision to call the store “Thelen Düsseldorf” reflects the strong territorial connotation on which the German company, taking advantage of the good position (central respect of Vestphalia), wants to focus, making some references with large prints of some of the symbols of Düsseldorf. As regard the inte-rior, the philosophy follows the setting previously tested: a furniture exhibition through the organization of four “houses”, each with a different featured logic, according to “areas of taste”. Particular care is taken in the design of the main strategic points of the store, such as the reception and the access to the various floors.

The renovation project includes a new entrance to the showroom, through rhe crossing of the tunnel that leads to the inner cavity. Obiective of the facadeìs project is the enhancement of existing windows and the iden-tification of an architecture as simple and efficient as possible in order to invite and show the new entrance. The idea is to:- Use the anthracite paint to create a contrast with the context, with something modern, stylish and visible. - Maintain the shelter and the windows. The frames are covered by the new anthracite finish.- Use steel plates (slabs) in order to: • Unify the windows. A steel slab runs for the full length of the facade and turn inside the tunnel that repre-sents the new access. This plate, set at the top of the windows, coversthe problem of the smaller frames and repeatedly shows the Thelen logo accompanied by other texts. • Show the new entrance. A large steel plate runs on one wall of the tunnel and comes out as can on the street and the inner courtyard. On this backlit slab stands the great tesxt THELEN obtained with a series of holes. This plate is detached from the anthracite wall. So the tunnel has on one side the slab with the inscription Thelen, on the other side other windows. The tunnel becomes an entrance threshold with enhanced by strong value.Materials.- The satinized steel, slightly translucent - The anthracite color- The light, linear and backlit The steel and anthracite symbolically evoke the territo-rial vocation of North Rhine area, of which Düsseldorf is one of the most important cities. They also evoke the idea of the coal and iron industry. The light takes on an artistic and role, suggesting the exploration of the tunnel with a walk to the entrance.

cova’s catalogkitchen’s catalog

2014. Trentoin collaboration with Stefano Semprebon designer

Cova Kitchens is a company, that produce high quality kitchens, well established, both in place, the rich and sunny Val di Non in Trentino; and in history, as eviden-ced by the brand name “Impresa storica d’Italia.” The catalog Cova Kitchens 2014 offers the reader several tales about contemporary living, focused on the theme of the kitchen. The kitchen is the place par excellence of “being together”, expression of the local food culture that has been handed down from generation to genera-tion; is the place where creativity and practise can rule experimenting and creating. For this reason, kitchen and living seem a home landscape, a landscape of culture and tales of life, a place where space and time come together to tell the tradition and the innovation. The “New Domestic Landscape” section introduces four houses, which represent four different living situations: contemporary home|villa, the apartment in the historic center, housing in the suburb and the house|villa in a typical valley of Trentino. For each context, three different living solutions have been imagined and digitally reconstructed, in order to show the potential of the product advertised. The reader, intrigued by the general pictures of the different location, will enter in the details that accompany and explain the features of the Cova Kitchens line, as if the four houses are the natural backdrop of twelve short tales of everyday life.
