A long-term partnerGeothermal energy is a green energy resource that is fully compatible with a sustainable development approach. Storengy is a key player for its partners due to its expertise in helping to manage geothermal project risks and the scope that it offers for long-term ties.

Thanks to cross-business synergies and collaborations within the Group, ENGIE possesses all of the surface and subsurface competencies required to develop and operate high and low-temperature geothermal projects, whether for power production, cogeneration, heating networks or others.

Already present in France and Indonesia, ENGIE may expand its geothermal business to other promising markets.

STORENGY’s expertisea long-standing player in the field of underground operations, at the very heart of the energy markets, storengy boasts extensive industrial experience which it leverages in the development of high and low-temperature geothermal sites. From field studies to subsurface operations, storengy supports its partners in their geothermal projects, whether for district heating networks or power generation.

our Know-how

Study and analysis of subsurface potential

Storengy’s expertise in subsurface sciences is a major asset in the design and implementation of geothermal projects. In the prospecting phase, geologists identify geothermal resource opportunities, mainly using public data. This prospecting by region or country allows Storengy to target the most suitable areas in which to apply for exploration permits.

Storengy takes care of the exploration licences and the applications for permission to carry out exploratory work, the procedures for which vary from country to country.

once the permit has been granted, the exploration phase can begin. During this phase, the features of the subsurface are identified in more detail. Storengy’s geological experts analyse all of the infor-mation collected: surface manifestations (hot springs and fuma-roles), geophysical measurements (faults) and topographical data (satellite images). By interpreting all of this data, Storengy assesses the size of the geothermal field and determines the most favourable locations for the first exploratory drillings. These findings serve to refine the initial estimates and determine whether the field can be developed cost-effectively.

“ Field geology is a key factor. The extent of faults, their direction and position allow us to better understand the underground field. Similarly, taking samples from hot springs and measuring the natural electrical currents circulating in the subsurface help us to assess the temperature and potential expansion of the reservoir as well as its depth. ”Laurent Cariou, Geologist

Exploration and development plan

In areas which show the greatest potential, the exploration pro-gramme continues by drilling one or more wells. This crucial phase enables the commercial potential of the area to be assessed and the most appropriate development plan to be drawn up. To this end, Storengy’s teams carry out subsurface modelling to determine the number of operation wells and their optimal location.

During the drilling operations, a Storengy expert supervises the various interventions, ensuring that the work runs smoothly and paying particular attention to the safety of staff and people living near the site. The expert also ensures that local expectations are taken into account.

“ With high-temperature geothermal reservoirs, the resource must be developed one step at a time so that the complexity of the reservoirs can be properly understood. Monitoring the production data allows us to refine the initial model and adapt the development plan. ”Patrick Egermann, Reservoir Engineer

Well design and operations

Storengy has teams specialising in the architectural design and construction of wells. The architecture and technical specifications of the wells are adapted on a case-by-case basis responding to the geological context and the project characteristics.

In the operations phase, Storengy oversees the wells’ performance and undertakes operational monitoring by carrying out maintenance operations.

“ Storengy’s drilling and well-equipment experts draw up the designs and technical specifications for the wells in line with industry standards. To carry out the work, Storengy engages reputable and experienced companies. Safety is a key factor in operational management. ”Moïse Raimondeau, Head of Engineering
