INTRODUCTION

CET was established in 1987 as a provider of materials quality assurance

testing to the construction industry. Since then, we have built a reputation

for quality service and excellent value.

We expanded our capabilities to include integrated ground risk

management solutions in 2012 through the addition of geotechnical and

environmental consultancy, supported by in-house investigation services.

By 2013 we had expanded our range of services to include high-quality

drainage evaluation and surveys.

Further expansion in 2016 means CET now offers a comprehensive

ground risk management service from regional offices in Maidstone,

Chesterfield and Heathrow. Soil and materials assessment services are

complemented by phased site investigations, environmental services and

a full geotechnical consultancy.

GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES

Our engineers have a thorough understanding of the engineering behaviour of

the ground and the geotechnical hazards related to different soil and rock types.

Working in conjunction with our environmental consultancy we are able to develop

a holistic approach to investigation and development of integrated geotechnical

and environmental solutions for potential development schemes.

Our comprehensive service includes, but is not limited to:

• Intrusive ground investigations (phased site investigations based on desk research and knowledge of proposed site redevelopments)

• Foundations for structures

• Substructure design assessments

• Slope stability and slope engineering

• Earthworks consultancy (specification/supervision/validation)

• Retaining structures

• Remediation

• Ground improvements and stabilisation

• Mine workings risk assessments and remediation

• Quarry design

• Pavement design assessments

• Concrete design advice

• Soakaway testing and associated advice

• Forensic investigation of geotechnical failures

• Geophysical investigations

• Expert witness

• Factual and interpretive reporting

Our geotechnical consultancy is backed by in-house, UKAS accredited laboratory soils testing to BS 1377 and other relevant British and European Standards.

Our geotechnical consultancy service has direct experience in many specialist applications including:

• Rail – CET maintains RISQS “Qualified by Audit” status for site investigation, geotechnical and environmental consultancy

• Highways and drainage

• Airports and runways

• Housing

• Commercial and industrial redevelopments

• Remediation consultancy

• Earthworks assessment, design and validation

• Water environment - including over water working

• Coastal

APPLICATIONS BENEFITS

CET provides an integrated, multi-disciplinary ground risk management service.

Our Geotechnical and Environmental Teams are supported by in-house site investigation and materials testing services; an approach that allows us to deliver significant cost and quality benefits to our clients:

• By devising site specific investigations in accordance with current best practice and guidance CET can help avoid unnecessary works and the associated impacts on costs and programme.

• Our experienced and trained consulting engineers can specify and supervise complex remedial earthworks and engineering solutions, and with the back-up of in-house soils testing can provide expedited and cost effective solutions saving project costs and time.

• Our engineers will work closely with our clients and other disciplines to ensure good communications on projects and a full understanding of site development issues.

• CET will often carry out works under secondment for other consultants and geotechnical contractors. We are able to provide factual or interpretive reporting, but our clients can be assured that our works will always be supervised and reported by qualified and experienced engineers.

West Anglian Main Line CET was engaged to undertake a ground investigation for proposed enhancement

works to the West Anglian Main Line in North East London. The scheme involved

undertaking various investigation works adjacent to live running rails and overhead

electrical cables. The works, carried out over more than two years, involved various

phases including:

• Cable percussion boreholes using both conventional and cut down boring rigs

• Static cone testing

• Driven window sampler boreholes

• Dynamic probing

• Ballast pits

• TRL DCP probes

• Geotechnical and environmental testing

• Ground gas and ground water monitoring

CET has successfully delivered all the phases of works using in-house drilling

crews and staff under CET’s RISQS accreditation.

South West Trains Station Car Parks RedevelopmentCET was commissioned to undertake two tranches of investigation to inform

the detailed design and construction of eleven multi-storey car parks on existing

ground level car parks whilst they were in operation.

CET designed site investigations targeted to suit the anticipated ground conditions

on each site and provide data for both the geotechnical and environmental

assessments. The works comprised:

• Contamination investigations including Preliminary and Generic Risk Assessments (PRA and GRA) and recommendations with respect to contamination risk to site workers, end users and the environment

• Geotechnical assessments of the sites for foundation, pavement and drainage design

• Site investigation by means of cable percussion boreholes and in-situ testing

• Geophysical investigations to determine the presence of possible below ground structures.

• CCTV surveys to assess extent and condition of extent of existing drainage

EXPERIENCE

Page 7: GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES · GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES Our engineers have a thorough understanding of the engineering behaviour of the ground and the geotechnical hazards related to different

Rhodaus Town, Canterbury – New Student AccommodationThe Rhodaus Town development was a multi-storey residential development

on the site of a former Peugeot garage and workshop. CET was commissioned

to undertake a combined geotechnical and environmental investigation for two

phases of the project.

Following a comprehensive desk study, CET delivered a preliminary risk

assessment (PRA) and subsequently developed a site investigation to both provide

a detailed geotechnical assessment of the site and to validate the PRA.

Site investigations comprised cable percussion boreholes, machine-dug trial pits

and instrumentation, all provided by CET’s in-house geotechnical and materials

testing teams.

Post-investigation, CET undertook a Generic Risk Assessment; which was used to

inform the remediation strategy. Once the remediation strategy had been agreed

and approved by the local authority, CET undertook further validation testing and

provided a detailed closure report.

Working closely with the designer and the principal contractor, CET were able to

provide a complete ground risk solution. The ability to deliver phased investigations

from start to finish enables CET to maintain control over the costs and quality of the

project overall; revising the scope of the investigation as results were ascertained

and delivering best value to the customer.
