Geostatistics
Graduate Certificate in Geostatistics This course develops the knowledge and skills needed for planning and implementing a geostatistical study. Whether you are already engaged in geostatistical resource estima-tion or thinking of making this role your next career step, this short-course Graduate Certificate will provide you with the essential knowledge and techniques needed to effectively apply modern geo-statistics using industry standard tools.
Course Overview The course provides the theory and methods for statistical analysis along with the mathematical modelling used in the analysis of earth and environmental science data. Topics include variography, spatial estimation and simulation tech-niques with a focus on the application to data from a variety of backgrounds. The course is of particular relevance to the mining, environmental and petroleum industries.

Why Join?
The course focus is on hands-on application of the techniques in-cluding: exploratory data analysis, variography, ordinary and simple kriging, change-of-support, multivariate estimation techniques (cokriging, principal component kriging), univariate and multivariate simulation. All materials for the units are available on-line, making study from remote locations easy. The course assessment is in the form of practical exercises and case studies with no formal exami-nations. ISATIS® geostatistical software is used throughout the course us-ing licenses provided by ECU.
Employers of Past Graduates
The majority of graduates from the course work in the mining sec-tor. Many of them have used the course to improve their career prospects with employers who are typically mining companies or mining consultancies, including Rio Tinto, BHP-Billiton, Cube Con-sulting, Hancock Prospecting, Coffey Mining, Snowden, Gemcom and Xstrata.
Admission Requirements
A three year bachelor degree with either a major that includes a mathematics/statistics component or equivalent prior learning in-cluding at least 5 years appropriate professional experience.
Course Location and Mode of Study
The Graduate Certificate in Geostatistics is a three- semester course available fully on-line. Students can commence the course in February. July intake may also be available subject to sufficient demand.
Course Structure
The course includes three 20 credit points core units.
Introduction to Geostatistics
This unit provides an introduction to geostatistical data analysis. The unit covers exploratory data analysis, variography, simple and ordinary kriging and aspects of cross-validation.
The unit is a pre-requisite for both MAT5114 and MAT5115.
Geostatistical Methods
In this unit indicator kriging, block-kriging, change of support, uni-form conditioning and co-kriging are covered as well as some spe-cialised estimation techniques.
Modelling and Simulation
In this unit univariate and multivariate simulation are considered. The main Gaussian algorithms are discussed as well as basics of the underlying Monte Carlo simulation.
