INCLINOMETER SPIRAL SENSOR

The RST Digital MEMS Inclinometer SpiralSensor is used to determine down-hole helicaldeformation of installed inclinometer casing.Spiralling is typically of concern only in deepinstallations, however, should poor installation besuspected or installed spiral of interest,

measurement of the installed groove azimuth canbe carried out with this instrument.Operation is similar to an inclinometer, using thesame cable and readout instruments, however itis necessary to read only one groove set, and nottake a 180 degree second reading set.

Compatible with RST’s Digital Inclinometer System. Simply connect theprobe to the reel’s connector and get spiral readings on the spotNo additional software required; The Inclinalysis™ software used for thedigital inclinometer system is also used to process the spiral dataCompact and lightweight design

INCLINOMETER CASING ANCHOR & ACCESSORIES

Inclinometer Casing Anchors are fixed to thebottom of the casing prior to installation toprevent uplift, usually due to buoyancy forces ofwater or grout. As soon as the anchor exits thebottom opening of the drill rod/borehole, thespring-loaded arms of the anchor areautomatically extended to grip the borehole wall.

Anchors available for 70 and 85mm casing inboth snap seal and glue and socket couplingstyles.Grouting version of the anchor available.Magnetic targets can also be integrated.

SLIP INDICATOR SYSTEM

An economical method of determining within a soilmass the location of a zone where movement isoccurring.A flexible slip indicator pipe with base plate isinserted into the base of a borehole andsurrounded with sand. When lateral movement of

the soil occurs, the flexible tube becomesdeformed in the zone of movement.Indicator probes attached to a length of supportrope are used to determine the zone of movement.

The GEO-XM™ settlement system is usedtypically to monitor settlement and heave infoundations, excavations, embankments anddams as well as behind retaining structuressuch as diaphragm walls and sheet piles. Itcan also be used in tunnels and shafts.Settlement is identified by the depth/positionat which settlement has occurred as well asmeasurement of the total amount ofsettlement.The GEO-XM™ system comprises a reedswitch probe and a series of magnetic targetspositioned on the outside of the flush jointedaccess or inclinometer tube. For soils wheresettlement is expected, telescopic joints or an

outer corrugated pipe can be installed tode-bond the inner pipe from the surroundinggrout/soil which is subject to settlement. Forother ground types the magnetic target ringscan just be attached directly to telescopic jointcouplings.

SOIL EXTENSOMETER

The VW Soil Extensometer monitors lateral andlongitudinal deformation of soil and different types ofembankments and embankment dams.It consists of a vibrating wire displacement sensorencased in a sealed body. The body contains atelescopic outer PVC pipe fitted with two flanges

and an inner stainless steel rod.One end of the rod is attached to the flange whilethe other is connected to a displacement sensorattached to the other flange. As deformation occurs,the telescopic pipe moves with the soil causing therod to operate the displacement sensor.

CARLSON JOINT & FOUNDATION METER

Joint meters and foundation meters are similar tostrain meters except they have greater range.This is accomplished by having a coil spring inseries with each of two loops of elastic wire. Thefoundation meter is the same as the joint meterexcept that it has its range mainly in contraction.

The joint meter is used mainly to measure theopening to joints and therefore it has most of itsrange in expansion. Range is allowed by spring-loading the elastic wire. Both measuretemperature as well as expansion or contractionin the same way that strain meters do.

CARLSON INSTRUMENTS - PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

CARLSON instruments are elastic wire strain meters containing twocoils of highly elastic steel wire, one of which increases in lengthand electrical resistance when a strain occurs, while the otherdecreases. The ratio of the two resistances is independent oftemperature (except for thermal expansion) and therefore the

change in resistance ratio is a measure of strain. The totalresistance is independent of strain since one coil increases thesame amount as the other decreases due to a change in length ofthe meter. Therefore, the total resistance is a measure oftemperature.

The cable most commonly used isheavy duty, neoprene rubber-covered,with either three or four conductors.Alternate cable types are available tosuit site specific conditions.The CARLSON model MA-6B andlater series readout instruments, whilecompatible with both three and fourwire systems, require only three

conductors to monitor bothtemperature and resistance. Earlierversions require four conductors tomonitor both parameters. Werecommend the total design length ofcable be attached at the factory toensure system integrity. Should thefinal design length not be known atthe time of order, specify the total

length of cable to be supplied in bulk,and that a 1m length of either three orfour conductor be attached. Asconductor diameter is determined bylead length, please specify theapproximate total length. While fieldsplicing is possible, the instructions inthe CARLSON field manual must befollowed.

CARLSON STRESS CELL

CARLSON Stress Cells are 178mm diameterplates with a strain-meter sensing elementmounted on one face. The plate has a mercuryfilm at its thickest and a flexible rim, with theresult that any stress through the plate is appliedto the mercury film.

Extraneous deformation such as drying shrinkagehas very little effect on stress through the plate(and the mercury) so the calibration is in terms ofcompressive stress per 0.01 per cent reduction inthe resistance ratio of the sensing element.Available for both soil and concrete.

Water pressure in the pores of a granularmaterial like soil reduces the internal friction andtherefore the stability. This pore pressure can bemeasured by a device which separates the waterpressure from the intergranular pressure. In theCARLSON pore pressure cell, the water

pressure is admitted to an internal diaphragmthrough a porous disc which holds back the soilor other granular material. The deflection of theinternal diaphragm is measured with the samesensing element as is used in the stress meters.

CARLSON REINFORCED CONCRETE METER

The CARLSON Reinforced Concrete Meter is arod-like device which simulates a bar ofreinforcing steel. The rod is hollow toaccommodate a miniature strain meter whichmeasures the change in length from which thestress is derived. What makes this meter unique

is that it measures the change in length of thesteel rod regardless of the occurrence of finecracking which is common to reinforcedconcrete. It measures the average strain overmost of the rod’s length.

CARLSON STRAIN METER

The CARLSON Strain Meter is a device whichcan be embedded in concrete to reveal theinternal deformations. It responds to any changein dimension of the concrete due to stress, creep,temperature change, moisture change orchemical growth. The main purpose of the strainmeter is to determine stress indirectly. Quick

changes in stress are revealed simply bymultiplying the measured strain by the modulusof elasticity. But for stress which develops over along period of time, account must be taken forchanges in modulus of elasticity and ofdeformations due to creep and to all causesother than stress.

Used for the measurement of temperature inrock, concrete and soil.It consists of a stainless steel body, a tensionedwire, an electromagnetic coil and signal cable.The body of the sensor expands and contractswith changes in temperature, increasing ordecreasing the tension of the wire.

When a readout is connected, it sends an electricpulse to the coil, which plucks the wire andcauses it to vibrate at its natural frequency. Asecond coil picks up the vibration and returns afrequency to the readout. The reading isconverted to units of temperature by applyingcalibration factors.

THERMISTOR STRING

RST thermistor string assemblies areenvironmentally hardened to provide accurateand reliable long-term measurements underdemanding conditions. The strings incorporateinterchangeable curve tracking, negativetemperature coefficient (NCT) thermistors.

As the thermistors are curve matched to desiredtemperature tolerance over selected temperatureranges, this permits the use of multiple sensorswith a single readout or datalogger, eliminatingthe need for costly calibration procedures.Readout instruments available.

REFLECTIVE TARGET

Model GSRT2 is a 2-dimensional reflective Bireflextarget used primarily for tunnel convergencemonitoring. It has reflectors on both sides.Models GSRT3/4 are 3-dimensional triple miniprism targets primarily used for measuring thedeflection of buildings. Both are mounted on

universal joints so they can be orientated in anydirection required and are made from high impactand resistant plastic with a bottom fitting whichallows them to be mounted on a wide range offixings such as convergence and reference boltsand prism poles.

CABLES

Geotechnical instrumentation used to measurethe performance and safety of structures requiressecure and reliable connections between thesensors and the data retrieval location.Geosense uses the highest quality cables madeto British and European standards. They haveexcellent strength and flexibility which makesthem ideal for installation within applications suchas dams, tunnels, bridges etc.

They are suitable for direct burial within selectedgraded material such as clay cores and filter sand.

OUTER SHEATHINGStandard Geosense cables are fitted with PUR outersheaths but other materials such as PVC, PE, Neopreneand Teflon are available.

CABLE CONDUCTORSThe number of conductors required is normallydetermined by the number & type of sensors that need tobe connected. Standard Geosense cables have StrandedTinned Copper (22-24 AWG) conductors. Other sizes areavailable.

SHIELDING & INSULATIONShielding gives protection from electromagneticinterference from nearby sources such as generators andother construction equipment and all Geosense cablesare fitted with Mylar type shields to minimise theseeffects. Other types of shield are available to suitindividual project requirements..Insulation of the individual conductors is normally with PEor PVC insulation.Specialist insulations to meet environmental conditionsare also available.

ARMOURWhere extra protection against point loads is requiredtypically within rock fills, landfills, embankments etc,wire-armoured cable is often used. A wide range ofarmouring is available to suit the individual protectionrequirement.

VENTED CABLESVented cable can be used for products such as ventedpiezometers and liquid level settlement systems to allowa path for the changes in barometric pressure to act uponboth sides of the sensing element and thus negate theneed for barometric compensation calculations.

ACCESSORIESA wide range of splicing kits, cable end protectors andconnectors are also available to ensure cablingconnections on site are quick & easy.

TRACK MONITORING SYSTEM

Monitors settlement and twist of rail tracks whichmay be affected by nearby construction activity,such as tunnelling or adjacent excavation, orwhich are located near hazardous zones such aspotential washout or landslide areas.

The system consists of bussed settlement sensorsmounted longitudinally along the track alignment,typically with a mount spacing of 2 or 3 metersand one, or several, track twist sensors mountedperpendicularly to the settlement sensors.
