We need to be realistic about children's developmental level and not over-estimate their ability to judge safe distances. A small error can result in a child being seriously injured. To keep children safe, we as adults need to start by setting a good example. Children learn a lot just by watching. If parents and older children behave in dangerous ways, younger children are likely to do so also. Older children may take greater risks dashing out between cars. Pedestrian safety lessons need to start early when children have to cross busy intersections from a very young age. For toddlers, parents can talk about what safety choices they make each time they cross the street, from looking both ways to making eye contact with drivers. By the time children are 4 or 5 years old, parents can start letting children make the decision about when it's safe to cross a street, starting with residential streets with light traffic before trying busy intersections. This lets parents gently correct bad choices so children can fine-tune their instincts about when it's safe to cross. Talking to children about why they need to follow particular rules or procedures for crossing safely is a good approach, like pointing out the good sense in walking a little further to use a pedestrian crossing rather than take a risk. The GMAS School Council Building and Grounds committee recently received a traffic management audit conducted by the City of Busselton. The audit covered aspects such as buses, traffic congestion at peak times, pedestrian flows and signage. As a result, the school will be making some changes to comply with the recommendations and we will be working closely with the City on our overall traffic master plan. At school we ask that you, as parents, observe the traffic signage and marked crossing areas, to always use these, and when walking, please do not enter/exit the school on the road ways. It may require a few more steps to take to find the safest point, but the time taken may save an injury. Anglican Schools Commission Retreat This year’s retreat for ASC senior staff was once again held at the St John of God Retreat Centre in Shoalwater. Our Retreat Conductor was The Most Reverend Dr Peter Carnley AC, former Archbishop of Perth and Primate of Australia. Fr Earle Chamberlain organised a visit to the school by Bernice Barry, who has just published a book on Georgiana Molloy called ‘The Mind that Shines’. We were very fortunate to have some time with Bernice and gain valuable insight into the research that went into the book. Congratulations We have great teachers at GMAS and it is wonderful that outside organisations also acknowledge this too. I would like to commend Tran Sia, Laura Gunter, Marisha Burnside and Justine Richmond who were all nominated in the positive Schools Teacher awards announced recently. These ladies have been recognised for their fine work and positivity in their teaching duties inside and outside the classroom. Well done! Modelling safe behaviour While on carpark and bus duty, I get to see parents and students in action using carparks and crossing roads. I am dismayed at the number of people who just duck across the road – not at the crosswalk- to save a few extra minutes to get to their destination. I would love to see everyone using the designated crossings in all parts of our school so that our students can be kept safe. Please can parents help to model the safe way to cross the roads by using the crosswalks. Do as I do, not do as I say, applies here. Assessment preparation With the onset of tests and exams, it is an appropriate time to encourage students to eat healthy food, get plenty of sleep and take time to revise notes and the work they have completed. I also encourage students to ask for help from their teachers to answer their queries or to go over concepts that they are not sure of. The time spent asking can help with clarifying specific points or ideas.

The Apple Development Education Team visited GMAS last week to have discussions with the school’s Management Team regarding our strategic IT intentions, and any future technology directions that the school may be considering. The Apple Team recognised the significant investment into technology the school has undertaken in the last three years, and are very keen to support the school in its educational direction. The Team toured the school and provided us with information regarding the Apple Distinguished Schools Program that the school is very keen to explore. With good wishes Mr Ted Kosicki Principal

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL FOR PARENTS / STUDENTS / TEACHERS Effective communication between the school and parents plays an important part in promoting an environment where students are happy, secure and successfully engaged in educational and co-curricular programs. However, when a concern arises some parents are unsure of who they should contact. Frequently the Deputy Principal or Heads of School are contacted as the first port of call. When this occurs the staff members then need to contact the class or Home Room teacher, find out the information and then get back to the parents. To streamline the process of communication if would be advantageous if parents: Check the child’s diary to see if information has been provided that may answer the

concerns. Check the student’s subject course outline, which should be stored at the front of the

student’s file. This contains information regarding course content and assignments. If further information is required, for academic concerns parents should contact the

subject teacher directly, as they are the person who has the most interaction with your child and can frequently provide the information required. For pastoral concerns this would be the Home Room teacher.

If your feel that your concerns are not addressed then the next stage would be to approach the Head of Department.

Below is a flow chart that outlines the communication protocol for parents / students / teachers.

MIDDLE SCHOOL continuedMIDDLE SCHOOL continuedMIDDLE SCHOOL continued ELECTIVE ROATATION All Middle School students received a new timetable this week and commenced new elective subjects in the Arts and Technology learning areas. ACC CROSS COUNTRY GMAS will be sending a team of students to compete at the ACC Cross Country on Thursday 28th May in Perth. Mr Yates and Mr Wendelin have done a great job in coaching these students and we wish them all the best in their races. SCHOOL DISCO The Middle School Term 2 Disco was initially scheduled for Friday of Week 10. However this event clashes with the fabulous GMAS Fashion Show scheduled for that weekend. The new date for the Middle School Disco will be Week 9, Friday 19th June. More information will be provided to the students regarding this event by the Middle School Leaders. ENGAGING STUDENTS IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL During this term I have been privileged to be able to spend some time visiting various classes in the Middle School to see how students are engaged in learning. It is really rewarding to see a broad range of strategies used for delivering the curriculum with students being fully engaged and enjoying participating. Education has come a long way from the early days of the ‘talk and chalk’ method of teaching. I wonder what some earlier educationalist would have thought 50 or 100 years ago if they walked into Ms Creswell’s class. What they would have observed was a teacher reading a story to the class as they followed in their own book but with students seeming to be disrespectful by continuing at random to make funny noises. However, the purpose of the lesson was to demonstrate the frequency and use of punctuation in writing. When a full stop was used a certain noise was made, when speech marks were used a different sound. Using a simple strategy these students were not only fully engaged in the activity, obviously having lots of fun and the end results learning the importance of punctuation. A second example of student learning was in Mrs Chazen class where students linked their real life experiences of the Canberra tour and visiting Parliament House, to re-enact a parliament debate in class. From my observations, there was no reason for a student to say they were ‘bored’ with so many different approaches used to enhance student’s learning. BRING BACK THE ‘F’ WORDS Be Fair, Be Fun, Be Focused and Be Firm. This was one important message within a workshop I attended recently. Another was that establishing a relationship with a child is the key to unlocking their learning. No rocket science there, just some very simple common sense stuff. I do believe this happens at GMAS, most of the time. When walking through our Junior School I cannot help but feel upbeat, looking in on all the great things that are happening; generally, the kids are happy, usually the students are learning and mostly everyone is doing the right thing. Of course we can and should improve; in building relationships with our students, being fair, fun, focused and firm we are definitely travelling in the right direction. I thank all our parents and guardians, and their children, for sharing this journey with us. MUSIC It seems not a week goes by without mention of our incredible music team. This week has seen performances in the MAC from many of our talented strings players and an enchanting afternoon in the ensemble room from our students taking singing lessons. Creativity and thinking are essential tools for our young children within this fast paced world; long may we continue to celebrate Music, Art and Drama at GMAS. SPELLING Spelling has been identified as a key priority within the Primary School Literacy Policy. Next week, we are fortunate to have a ‘Words Their Way’ facilitator from Melbourne at the school on Wednesday and Thursday running workshops for the students and staff. This is just one piece of a complex jigsaw that should help to improve outcomes within the school. BUSY TEACHERS We are fortunate in having such fantastic teachers in our classrooms. Ms Burns has noted the achievements of Mrs Sia, Miss Gunter, Miss Burnside and Mrs Richmond in receiving nominations for Positive Schools Teacher of the Year. We are lucky that all the Junior School classes have teachers who are passionate in their own right: Ms Rowe is busy ‘growing’ her Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Program. Mrs Leach and Ms Rowe are directing our ‘Green Team’ in sustainability practices. Mr and Mrs Owens are promoting health and wellbeing within the school through a variety of initiatives and research

programs including Positive Education, Mindfulness and Positive Schools Plus. Mrs Cook and Mrs Pates direct time towards gifted and talented programs such as Maths Olympiad, Tournament of Minds

and Clued Up Kids. Miss Royer and Mrs Herring expend a huge amount of time towards kids hockey. Mr Brown, Ms Nayler, Mrs Mahoney and Ms Dzimati all contribute wholeheartedly towards our GMAS community in a

variety of ways, whether through sport, music or play. Thank you to all these special individuals who give so much of themselves to our great school. THINGS TO NOTE Please send any Junior School Colours nominations to [email protected] before the end of Week 7. Further

information is available on the GMAS website. The Junior School Reports will have a new look this semester to reflect requirements laid down by the Australian

Curriculum and ACARA. The format is likely to be refined over the next 12 to 18 months and your feedback is welcomed.

Brrrrrr! The weather is certainly getting wintery in the mornings. Please ensure your children bring jumpers in their bags to keep warm if the weather changes throughout the day. A reminder too, that if your child has a cold/flu/cough with a temperature, to please keep them home. Germs spread like wildfire at school, and it isn’t fun to be at school when you’re feeling unwell. I thank you in advance for your support. All three Pre-primary classes headed off to Donnybrook this week to visit an apple orchard. Children learnt about the process of growing apples and were able to pick a bag each to take home. They also got to work on their gross motor skills and social skills at the Donnybrook Apple Fun Park. Congratulations to PPGs Practicum teacher Miss Teena Gordon, for organising such a wonderful excursion for the children. In the next couple of weeks some parents have volunteered to put up the donated shade sails (thank you Miller family!) in the Kindy playground over the sand pit. We thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to create an EC busy bee. We have so many wonderful ideas for the Kindy and PP playgrounds, but need some help to do so. Our fantastic P&F would like to get on board and assist too. Are you free to help out? We would love to invite parents, grandparents and GMAS community members to come along and help create an amazing outdoor play space for our students. We would love donations of large logs, wine barrels, sleepers, crates, pallets, old tyres, plants etc. to add to our playgrounds. We are trying to create a wonderful nature play space, which evokes curiosity and challenge for the children. We are looking for playground elements, which can be used for a variety of imaginative purposes. Some inspirational ideas can be seen in the pictures below. Please send me an email to express your interest in helping out. Many hands make light work. Let’s see what our awesome GMAS families can come up with. Mrs Kathryn Campbell Head of Early Childhood

Outdoor Education excursion to Shark Bay The Year 11 and 12 Outdoor Education class went on a sailing camp to Shark Bay from Saturday 18th to Saturday 25th April. Prior to the expedition, students learned to sail every Friday and received their Recreational Skipper's Ticket. Once in Shark Bay, students had to pack all their belongings, food, tents and anything they required for the week into water tight barrels, eskis, dry bags and into their boat. We then set sail out into the archipelago. Each day, students either sailed or motored to a different beach each afternoon. Here they set up tents, a kitchen area, a trench toilet and watch tent. The students were without a shower, flushing toilet or access to any technology or facilities for the week. Every night we were greeted with a beautiful sunset and a vast star filled sky. We saw wildlife including dolphins, turtles, fish, stromatolites, a dugong skeleton and the most flies I think any of us have ever experienced in our lives. It was a long and tiring, yet beautiful camp, where all students learnt to be self sufficient and not rely on our very accessible everyday luxuries. They were challenged and rose to the occasion. English CATs This year in English, we have introduced Common Assessment Tasks, commonly referred to as ‘CATs’, for all students in Years 7-10. Twice per Semester, students will undertake a challenging English task (usually an essay or comprehension), which is then cross-marked and moderated within the English Department. Marking of the Year 9 and 10 CATs is now completed and the amazing top achievers are listed below: Congratulations to these high achieving students! The next official CAT will take place in Term 3. However, the examinations this term will be marked in a similar way and will also assist to measure student achievement against the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard for each year group. Secondary School Drama Night It was ‘Lights….. cameras…..action!’ at the MAC on Tuesday evening as the Drama students from Year 7 to 12 put hours of rehearsing behind them as they entertained a sizeable crowd of proud parents and friends. The Year 12 WACE monologues by Madigan Spooner, Tom Principe, Emily Wood and Indiya Webb were extremely impressive as were the Year 11s, Jessica McNab and Kelly-Ann McDonald, who gave debut performances of their original works. Supporting the Senior students were the Year 10 Drama class, Anika Best, Grace Davies, Cleo Murray, Kaeleigh Brown, Samuel Johnston, Kirsty Millar, Jai Winters, Lochlan Curtis, Daniel Watkins, Grace Richmond, Erin Ringrose and Shannon Dyke, who presented ‘The Waiting Womb’, a very funny one act comedy, as well as the most outstanding Year 7 and 8 mime performances and one Year 9 selected from the classroom program. It was a night highlighting many styles of drama and a high standard of performance was attained by all involved. Congratulations to Caelin Winchcombe in Year 10 who has received a Busselton Freight Rising Sports Star of the month award for his achievements in sailing. Well done Caelin. Winter Sports Well done to all our GMAS students and parents that braved last week’s weather to play their soccer, hockey and netball games. Some of our GMAS netballers even went on and played in the “Sara Donovan Carnival” in Bunbury on the Sunday. Please note that all the Winter sports have different rules about when a game can be called off. If a team needs to forfeit, the coach or manager of that team needs to let the Hockey/Netball/Soccer Association know 24 hours before the game. If you are unsure if your child should turn up to play, please check with your team’s coach or manager as they are the ones who, along with umpires, will usually make a decision. Information can always be found in the bylaws pertaining to that sport: Hockey: https://sitedesq.imgstg.com/assets/siteDesq/11864/documents/Bylaws%202014.pdf Netball: http://busseltonnetballassociation.wa.netball.com.au/files/39630/files/BYLAW_2014.pdf Soccer: http://lnjsa.com.au/about-lnjsa/docs/category/21-lnjsa-information.html Girls AFL Thanks to everyone that has signed up to play Girls Footy for GMAS. Exchange student update

Some exciting news this week as two of our Year 9 students have been selected to go on the Busselton Sister City Exchange to Sugito later in the year. Congratulations to Kaleesha Johnson and Nina Raper, who were successful in their applications. This involved a written component, and finally an interview panel. We will host the Japanese students in Term 3 and the girls will travel to Japan over the October school holidays.

We have 4 Italian students arriving at the end of June as part of the Western Australian Italian Teachers Association exchange. Host families are travelling to Perth this weekend for orientation and most have been interacting with their students already, sending messages and emails. We look forward to welcoming them to GMAS. The second day had everyone heading to the WA Career Expo at the Convention Centre.

When they weren’t busy collecting goodies, most were taking the opportunity to talk with

industry experts about university and TAFE courses as well as apprenticeships and

pathways.

We even managed

some exercise in the

centre of Perth city

89% of students

surveyed following the

camp rated it as “not too

bad” or “great” so we’re

looking forward to

making it even bigger

and better next year!!
