GEORGIA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY News As my year in office ends, what comes to my mind is how much I appreciate the hard-working members of our board. Over the course of the year, the board of Georgia Watercolor Society has mounted a Member Exhibition and workshop, a Signature Show, the National Exhibition and workshop and the Scholarship Show at Binders Limelight Gallery for high school students. We have provided quarterly artist demonstrations open to our members and the public. On June 1, we are hosting a plein air event at Morgan Falls Overlook Park in Sandy Springs open to members and the public as part of our demonstration series. Working with Lauren Mohundro on the 2012 Member Exhibition was a pleasure. Her sense of humor and attention to detail served her well and will continue to do so as she takes on the role of GWS president. Member Exhibition entry chair, Marian O’Shaughnessy, applied her extensive business experience to the task of receiving and organizing the hundreds of paintings submitted. In early 2013, the Signature Show was hung at Johns Creek Art Center under the smooth guidance of immedi- ate Past President Kathy Kitz. Planning for the 2013 34th National Exhibition began in late 2012. Ken Weaver, second vice president and national exhibition chair, attacked the preparation for the event early on. Planning for publicity was underway in late summer, as Rosemary Segreti put together notices and ads to draw the interest of artists across the nation. Rosie Coleman, national entry chair, performed the detailed task of receiving the National Show entries, organizing them and cataloging results. Acting as sponsorship chair, I contacted our sponsors and new prospects for prize money and merchandise gifts for the National Exhibition winners. The exhibition was hung at the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association Gallery in April, with a workshop featuring Marilyn Hughey Phillis. More than 40 members gathered for Marilyn’s demonstra- tion, and the awards luncheon and annual meeting. In the background your faithful board, keeps the machine running. Summer is almost upon us—time for vacations,

days at the beach or in the mountains, travels in this country and abroad…lots of opportunity for painting or to sketch or photograph for paintings you may do in your studio. Meanwhile, your hard-working board is behind the scenes keeping things humming along for GWS. Congratulations and thanks to Lauren Mohundro for taking on the mantle of president. (Meet Lauren through “Every Artist Has a Story,” page 5.) The majority of the board is staying on for another year. Huge thanks to all who are doing so and who believe in and support GWS with their energy and efforts. Thanks, too, to those who are stepping down after several years on the board. Your work was important and helped move GWS forward and grow.

This issue is packed and really showcases what GWS is doing. Like the old-time newsboys who walked the street corners selling newspapers, I want to shout, “Read all about it!”

We are gathering news for the Summer 2013 issue to be published in mid-August. The deadline for Member News is July 13. Put Member News in the subject line. David Raderstorf is the assistant editor for this section. You can make his work easier by following the Member News Guidelines printed in each newsletter. Please note his email and home address: David Raderstorf – [email protected]; 404-918-4659; 260 Sageglen Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044.

If you have other news, suggestions and comments—and that best art advice, with jpegs—email me at [email protected].

Happy summer painting,

email, took over the job of membership chair mid-term. Sally is also credentials chair—she tracks the points that earn Signature status. I applaud Sally, a former GWS president, for doing triple duty.

Jane Springfield, our recording secretary keeps our minutes for every meeting, recording every word. Jean Jones, who is stepping down after five years as treasurer, has been doing her job ably and with a smile. Her recommendations are intelligent and well thought-out. Ken Weaver is stepping into the treasurer’s shoes for 2013-14. Judith Schonbak, how can we express the invaluable service you do for GWS, by editing and putting together our quarterly newsletter? It is beautiful, organized and chock full of information, colorful images and perfect grammar and spelling! Just turn the page and see for yourself. Thanks to David Raderstorf for his assistance with Member News. Tracy Foutz-Hunt, our webmaster, keeps our website up to date. Thank you for a doing very challenging job. Our website will soon be the source of our member directory and more and more pertinent information.

Judy Greenberg, past president and my mighty mentor (!)—thank you for putting together our stimulat-ing and inspiring artist demo series. And thank you for making my wish come true to have a plein air event coming up June 1. (See page 6.) The GWS Scholarship Show has grown every year. Our own Anne Brodie Hill is completely dedicated to this project, so much so, that she wants to pilot the program yearly.

There are so many people who keep GWS up and running. As many tasks as your board does perform, we cannot do it without the support of our members. Thank you all for entering exhibitions, attending workshops and demonstrations and events. Thank you for submitting your work and announce-ments to our website. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and interacting with so many of you this year. I invite you to become even more involved. Your board may be calling you to contribute. Say yes!

I pass the presidential baton to Lauren Mohundro. She is extremely capable and conscientious. We are all looking forward to a very exciting year going forward under Lauren’s leadership.

See you soon!

The Georgia Watercolor Society’s 34th National Exhibition was held at the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association Gallery in Blue Ridge, Georgia, from April 5 - May 17, 2013. Marilyn Hughey Phillis, AWS, NWS, judged the show and selected 74 paintings from 312 entered. Of those, 147 were from 27 different states.

Marilyn did a fantastic job with the three-day workshop. Her methods of achieving award-winning paintings were amazing to see. She challenged the 14 participants greatly, and they went away with whole new ideas about how to approach painting. Her sensitivity and stamina were unbelievable. Following her demonstration, a luncheon was held in the gallery. Cindy King of Trolley Treats served a delicious menu of beef medallions or salmon on salad with mixed vegetables, wine, peach tea and dessert. GWS presented the awards, followed by a short annual meeting.

A Salute to Our Future ArtistsIn April, in the Sixth Annual GWS High School Seniors Scholarship Show 2013, senior high school art students displayed their talent, skill and creativity. Forty-eight watermedia paintings by students from five metro Atlanta counties were accepted and displayed in the Limelight Gallery at Binders Art Supplies and Frames from April 8 to May 3. Schools participating were from DeKalb, Gwinnett, Fulton, Cobb and Clayton counties.

On April 7, Judy Greenberg, Sam Alexander, Sally Evans, Kathy Kitz, Jane Springfield and Anne Brodie Hill helped hang and jury the show. Thanks to Jacob Gunter, Binders workshop manager, and Marion Hood, floor manager, who received the paintings at Binders and helped get the Limelight Gallery ready for the show.

GWS and Binders hosted the awards reception on May 4. Awards totaled $2400 in Binders gift cards, which were paid for by contributions from GWS ($1800) and Binders ($600). Congratulations to the award-winning students:

Anne Brodie Hill, GWS community outreach chair, is also on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) www.americansociety-ofmarineartists.com. She selected nine paintings with a marine theme, and asked Signature members of ASMA to choose artwork for the Young Marine Artist Search Awards (YMAS).

The YMAS First Place award went to Olivia Park from Northview High School in Fulton County (teacher - Jeannette Clawson), for her painting “And Again I Turn Back to the Light.” The two YMAS Honorable Mention awards went to Ha Truong, North Gwinnett High School (teacher - Yvette Kim), for the painting “Day at the Beach,” and Michelle Maxwell, DeKalb School of the Arts (teacher - Bonnie Diamond) for the painting “Little Mermaid and the Seawitch.” These students received an award ribbon, certificate, ASMA

catalog, one-year ASMA student membership and a Binders gift certificate award.

Congratulations to all of these award-winning students and their teachers. GWS thanks everyone for participating in the GWS Scholarship Show. We also thank Binders Art Supplies and Frames for its support and donation to this exhibit and the students. We hope that our recognition of high school seniors and their artwork will encourage them to continue their art studies in college and perhaps in their careers after college.

Officially, as of June 1, Lauren Mohundro is the new president of GWS. She is already in action! This is a perfect opportunity to introduce her to you.

Lauren, how do you feel about accepting the position of GWS president for the next year? I know this is an opportunity to meet people. Not having a strong background in art gave me a second thought, but knowing we have such a strong, dedicated board, the decision was apparent.

Tell me a little about your background.I am from Memphis, Tennessee, and studied at the University of Memphis. Then I moved to Ohio. When I was younger I played the violin. I have three degrees: a BA in elementary education and two Masters. I taught elementary education in Alabama and was an educator for 34 years. When did you realize you wanted to be an artist? After each degree, I would reward myself with some art classes. Art was always somewhat of a treat. After retiring, I took watercolor classes with Pat Fiorello, Marie Matthews and Kathy Rennell Forbes. Learning from other students is also very important to me.

Who influenced you in your art?My mother, cousin and aunt were all dabbling with art. I remember sketching with them.

You said you played the violin. Do you believe there is a relationship between art and music?Creativity and the accomplishment in artistic endeavor—they both affect a sense of being.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned from teachers? You can have talent, but practice, practice, practice. I am awestruck by talent. Edgar Whitney and Mel Stabin taught me to simplify. You can have a loose sense of painting, yet realistic.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? I see myself healthy and painting, enjoying the skills I’ve learned. My intention is to appreciate the many forms of art and strive for harder shows.

What are your goals for GWS as president? • Touch base with chairs to find improvement.• Revamp the website.• Publish the GWS bylaws (in the directory and

on the website) so that every member knows what makes GWS tick.

• Evaluate more plein air destinations for member outings.

Great Art Advice In the last few issues of the newsletter, we have published the best art advice you have received and which may have influenced your work and confidence. In this issue, we want to share advice from Marilyn Hughey Phillis in a letter she wrote after instructing the workshop for GWS in April. Although written to the workshop attendees, Marilyn meant this advice for all of us.

Dear GWS Workshop Students,I started making notes on the class as I flew home. You were a wonderful group and I feel privileged to have worked with you as you entered some off-beat territory in watermedia painting. First I noticed how hard you worked at your given tasks and how willing you were to take chances in unfamiliar territory. Yet, you were always your own person in your creative approach. Hold on to that!

I still do not know the names of those who got in the show, except in a few cases where I went back to check on a name. I’ll have to wait until I get the catalog to have full knowledge of the show. I deliberately trained myself to ignore names in

judging. The important thing is the painting and did it achieve what it seemed to have as its goal. There are certain artists whose work becomes familiar over time and for their fine achievement.

Those works one does recognize or at least makes a good guess. There are others who have studied with well known instructors and that factor becomes obvious, partly because the influence is there but never the real talent. A student should not want to become a clone, but to learn to use certain new knowledge to become a better and more individualized artist. Everyone has a personal statement to make and that should be encouraged.

Some of you have had the experience of studying with various artists and have acquired knowledge in the many ways of expression in watermedia. Some classes emphasize the use of special effects, some emphasize composition and design elements, others use only transparent watercolor, while others offer a grab bag of media, collage, pouring, opaque-translucent watercolor-transparent approaches. All are valid and add to the versatility of watermedia. Most important are the ones which recognize your indi-viduality as a person and an artist. Each person has something special to add to the tapestry of visual expression. Learn to know your own voice and how it can add to the whole spread of creative work.

Also hold on to a few examples of what you did each year. Refer back to those works, for over time, they are a timeline of progress in its ups and downs. Just keep PAINTING!

With all the best for the future,

Marilyn Hughey Phillis, AWS/NWS

James Taylor, Signature member and past president of GWS, is leading an excit- ing workshop “Painting the Human Form in Watercolor.” James teaches how to com- pose a line drawing of the model and teaches paint recipes for light and dark skin tones. He covers use of value changes, lost edges and composition and discusses methods of placing dark values into work without creating mud—secrets revealed! Bring samples of your work so that James can critique it individually and give suggestions for correcting problems and issues. Models will be both light- and dark-skinned.

I want to volunteer for GWS activities and expand my knowledge of watercolor, learn how to manage a show, and develop friendships with other watercolor artists.

Member News Guidelines We try to print what you write, but we do condense lengthy entries. Please read the Member News and write your items in the same format. Use third person and be sure to have exact and complete information about the exhibition, correct title of venue, full name of organizations, name of award, dates of workshops etc. Double check your facts! Send text in Arial font, 12 type size. We do not include acceptances into and awards for GWS National or Members shows as there would be far too many to publish. We welcome jpegs of your work and include as many as we can in the newsletter. PLEASE SEND JPEGS SEPARATELY—DO NOT EMBED THEM IN THE EMAIL WITH YOUR NEWS.

SPECIAL NOTE: Please do not refer us to a website, press release or newsletter to get your news. We do not have time to track down information from those sources.

The deadline for the summer 2013 GWS Newsletter Member News is July 13. The newsletter will be published by the second week of August. Please put GWS Member News in the subject line. If you have any questions about the format, send an email to: [email protected]. For those who mail items, send to David Raderstorf, 260 Sageglen Rd., Lawrenceville, GA 30044. Thanks! —Judith Schonbak, Editor, GWS Newsletter
