GPA growing capacity, markets through rail
Greetings,
I am pleased to announce an important new initiative that
we believe will provide a better value proposition to port customers.
At the Georgia Ports Authority, we are expanding our
intermodal rail services to better accommodate our expanding
customer base, with a new effort we call the Mid-American Arc.
As the westernmost major hub port on the U.S. East Coast,
hosting more weekly vessel calls than any port in the South Atlantic
region, Savannah is perfectly situated to expand its services
to Mid-American Arc cities, ranging from Atlanta to Memphis,
St. Louis, Chicago and the Ohio Valley.
The Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal is the region’s
busiest intermodal gateway, handling 38 trains per week of import and export cargo.
To keep ahead of our growth curve, we announced earlier this year a major intermodal expansion. Through
a $44 million grant awarded to GPA by the U.S. Department of Transportation, along with $84 million in local
matching funds, we have started a project to expand our two on-terminal rail yards.
Set for completion in 2020, the project will double rail capacity at Garden City Terminal, from 500,000
rail container lifts to 1 million lifts per year.
Served by Class I rail providers CSX and Norfolk Southern, Savannah already has one of the nation’s
most extensive on-dock rail infrastructures. Through this improvement, we will create a state-of-the-art facility,
unique on the U.S. East Coast.
Another one-of-a-kind facility is our Colonel’s Island Terminal at the Port of Brunswick. We’re in the process
of doubling our auto processing capacity at Colonel’s Island, with a long-term plan to add 540 acres of vehicle
space on the island’s south side. Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics has already occupied 20 of those additional
acres, while International Auto Processing has leased another 49. A separate 30-acre parcel should come
online in January.
Serving the U.S. Southeast – the nation’s fastest growing demographic region, the Port of Brunswick
is America’s fastest growing port for automobile imports and exports. Currently No. 2 in the U.S., we’ve got
our eye on becoming the busiest autoport in the nation.
Rail also plays an important role for the autoport in Brunswick. The GPA has completed a major expansion
at Anguilla Junction, providing greater flexibility and storage capacity.
It’s another way the Georgia Ports Authority, along with our state and private sector partners are forging
a smarter, faster logistics network.

MCCARTHY TO HEAD OPERATIONS AT GPA Georgia Ports Authority hires former COO at CMA CGM America
JCB Growth Continues with Largest Shipment to Savannah In 2015, JCB received what was then the company’s largest single vessel shipment of 341 construction and agricultural machines to the Georgia Ports Authority from its manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom. That record was broken in June when JCB’s UK facility shipped over 400 machines worth more than $35 million to the Port of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal. The vessel Tugela
delivered the shipment. JCB will inspect and configure the machines to
customer specifications at its North American headquarters in Savannah
before shipping the units to authorized distributors throughout North
America. JCB also manufactures skid steers, compact track loaders, and the
3CX backhoe in Savannah, exporting them through Ocean Terminal.
Ocean Link Opens Eatonton WarehouseOcean Link, Inc. has announced the opening of a new warehouse in Eatonton, Georgia. The new facility is the sixth warehouse in the Southeastern United States for Ocean Link which also operates in Savannah, Pooler and Garden City, Georgia. This new warehouse will allow Ocean Link to better service its Middle
and North Georgia customers by providing shorter shipping times as well as
increasing inventory and product availability to all customers.
The nearly 150,000 square foot facility, which will house multiple
customers and commodities, operates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EDT) Monday
through Friday.
The Georgia Ports Authority has
named Ed McCarthy as its new COO.
McCarthy comes to Georgia from
his latest post in Norfolk, Va., as chief
operating officer for CMA CGM America.
Tuesday, Sept. 6, was his first day at GPA.
“We’re thrilled to bring on someone
with Ed’s expertise to oversee port
operations,” said GPA Executive Director
Griff Lynch. “His experience at major
shipping lines and port terminals on both
coasts will deliver important insights as
we work to capture new opportunities in Savannah and Brunswick.”
At CMA CGM, McCarthy oversaw an annual budget of $1.9 billion and
led a team of 150 employees, managing more than 400 vendors in marine,
rail, trucking and logistics.
“It’s an honor to join the team at the GPA,” he said. “Georgia’s ports
are known throughout the industry as models of efficiency, and I am excited
for the opportunity to help grow that success.”
Named CMA CGM America’s senior vice president of operations in
2011, McCarthy was promoted to chief operating officer for the shipping line
in 2013. Prior to his tenure with CMA CGM, McCarthy had served in senior
management and operations positions at Sealand Services, APM Terminals
and Virginia International Terminals.
As chief operating officer at the GPA, McCarthy will be responsible for
sustaining the profitable growth and development of GPA’s operations, while
maintaining world-class operating standards. His direct reports include
the directors of engineering and facilities maintenance; information
technology; equipment maintenance and crane and ship operations; container
operations; breakbulk and bulk operations; and the director of protective
services, as well as the senior director of strategic operations and safety.
A total staff of 973 employees will report to this position, which represents
nearly 90 percent of the GPA’s total workforce.
McCarthy obtained a Bachelor of Science from the Maritime College at
the State University of New York, a diploma in terminal management at Lloyd’s
Maritime Academy at Kent College, Dartford UK, and a Masters in Business
Administration from William & Mary University, Mason School of Business.
He has served as chairman of the board for Consolidated Chassis Management
Company and as a member of the board of directors for the Ocean Carrier
Equipment and Maintenance Association.
McCarthy and his wife, Heather, have a daughter, 15, and two sons, aged
14 and 17. They will live in Savannah, Ga.

Global Commerce Generates $4.4 Billion in Investments in GeorgiaThe Global Commerce Division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) helped create a total of 25,341 new jobs and generate $4.4 billion in investment during FY 16. This growth is a result of the expansion or relocation by 365 companies spanning every region of the state.
“Georgia has consistently been named a top state for business because of our highly skilled workforce and business-friendly economic environment,” said Georgia
Gov. Nathan Deal. “In recent years, companies from across the country and around the world have chosen Georgia to relocate their headquarters or expand
operations. Our world-class infrastructure and thriving technology industry continue to attract companies looking to reach growing markets in the southeastern
states. I am confident that Georgia has the resources and economic environment to support growing businesses in the years to come.”
At its July board meeting, the Georgia Ports Authority approved a spending package of $19.7 million to construct the Appalachian Regional Port in Murray County, Georgia. “We would like to thank our Board of Directors, Governor Deal, the state
of Georgia, Murray County and CSX Transportation for making this incredible
partnership possible,” said Executive Director Griff Lynch. “The Appalachian
Regional Port (ARP) will create a new gateway to the Port of Savannah for
our customers serving Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and beyond.
We estimate the ARP will offset more than 350 truck miles per container, or
8 million miles in the first year.”
The new inland terminal is the second for the GPA and part of the Network
GPA BOARD APPROVES $19.7M FOR NEW INLAND TERMINALGeorgia program designed to create inland terminals throughout the state
to reduce intermodal truck traffic and provide greater rail capacity to the
Southeast U.S. and beyond.
The inland terminal in Chatsworth will be approximately 40 acres and be
operated using highly efficient rubber-tired gantry cranes to move cargo to and
from CSX trains. GPA expects construction to be complete in late summer, 2018.
“The GPA, the state of Georgia and our partners in the private sector are
very focused on rail and road connections to and from our ports,” said GPA Board
Chairman Jimmy Allgood. “Establishing these inland terminals will extend our rail
advantage into a multi-state region, ease highway traffic congestion, and prepare
Georgia’s ports for a new era of growth.”

CARGO MOVE REVIVES BARGE TRAFFIC TO AUGUSTAWhen a massive piece of equipment moved up the Savannah River to Augusta from Georgia Ports Authority’s Ocean Terminal recently, it marked the first time since the 1970s that cargo has been barged from Savannah to its old-time trading partner to the northwest. “This demonstrates Savannah’s ability to move super-sized cargo inland
via river barge. It’s a useful option when a cargo’s size and weight complicate
overland transit,” said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch. “The GPA and our
partners in the Savannah market have the right equipment and expertise
to handle these specialized moves safely and efficiently.”

The Georgia Ports Authority is in the process of transitioning its container-handling rubber-tired gantry cranes to electric power. By using diesel power only to move between container stacks, eRTGs cut diesel use up to 95 percent.
The Georgia Ports Authority has received a 2016 EPA Clean Air Excellence Award for its electric rubber-tired gantry crane program that will transfer its container handling equipment from diesel to electric power.
GPA Wins EPA Clean Air Award
In 2012, GPA began to implement the electric
rubber tired gantry crane program. Forty-five have
been transitioned from diesel to electric power or
purchased with electric power capability, bringing
GPA’s eRTG fleet to 30 percent of the total.
This cutting-edge technology, built to a GPA
design, is the first eRTG installation of its kind at
a port in North America.
“The eRTG project is unique and innovative,
a model others can follow with GPA’s partners to
effectively work together for a common goal to
reduce energy usage and diesel emissions,” said
GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch.
At a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
awards ceremony held in Washington, D.C.,
Hope Moorer, general manager of waterways
and navigation programs, was on hand to
personally receive the award on behalf of the GPA.
“It is an honor to be recognized in this way
by the EPA,” Moorer said. “The award highlights
the Georgia Ports Authority’s commitment to
operating its terminals in an environmentally
responsible manner.”
GPA has invested over $17.5 million to bring
the 45 electric RTGs online. Over the next 10 years,
the entire fleet of 169 machines will have electric
power capability. This milestone project increases
capacity and productivity in an environmentally
responsible way, as the eRTGs use up to 95
percent less diesel fuel than conventional RTGs,
with corresponding reduced diesel emissions for
improved local air quality.
The GPA was one of seven groups or individuals
recognized by the EPA for innovative work
on clean air and climate projects. The 2016 Clean
Air Excellence Awards are given to state, local,
tribal, and private sector programs that educate
the public in improving air quality or reducing
harmful air pollutants or greenhouse gas emissions.
“Each of these award winners has taken

real, tangible steps to improve public health in
their communities by reducing air pollutants or
greenhouse gases,” said Janet McCabe, acting
assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and
Radiation. “These projects reflect the creativity
and commitment of public and private sector
organizations to make a difference and drive us
toward a cleaner, healthier future.”
Project partners include Konecranes, Inc., Georgia
Power, the Electric Power Research Institute, and
Conductix-Wampfler.
At full build-out, electric RTGs will cut diesel
consumption by more than 3 million gallons per
year, for a net savings of over $9 million – providing
a positive environmental message to the community
and customers. The annual reduction in CO2 will
be nearly 70 tons by 2026.
orld Distribution Services has opened a new facility
close to the Port of Savannah.
The expansion in Savannah adds to the world-class
logistics network and well-established warehousing
footprint that WDS has in the United States.
“We look forward to elevating our service offerings through our expansion in this market,” says WDS Vice President, John Morrow. “This facility exhibits many exciting features such as: 100,000 square feet, 12 dock doors, 28’ clear height, expansive trailer parking and easy access to all major freeways. Our proximity to the port allows for quick freight turnaround times and the ability to meet last minute export shipments.” Morrow continues: “This strategic expansion demonstrates the
commitment WDS has to offering shippers and freight forwarders a

network that WDS has built across the U.S. With the Savannah facility, we
now have a new hub for American commerce.”
The Port of Savannah is centrally located to serve the U.S. Southeast
— the fastest growing region in the nation. This is illustrated by the fact
44 percent of the U.S. population is within easy reach of the Port of
Savannah via the inland connectivity infrastructure. As cargo demands
parallel the population growth of this region, efficient access to trade
via Georgia’s ports will become even more vital.
“We are very excited to begin offering services to our valued customers
in the Savannah market,” said Dale Young, Regional Operations Manager for
WDS. “The work that the Georgia Ports Authority has done to grow the Port
of Savannah and position it to take advantage of new market opportunities
now and in the future, played a large role in our decision to locate our new
facility here in Savannah. The Port has been a great partner throughout this
process, and we look forward to growing that partnership and becoming an
active member in the local maritime logistics community.”

MID-AMERICAN ARC
GEORGIA PORTS AUTHORITY’S
TO EXPANDTARGET MARKET
Floor & Decor announces 1.4M square-foot distribution center
n the annual Savannah State
of the Port address, Georgia
Ports Authority Executive
Director Griff Lynch detailed
a new strategic rail initiative,
‘GPA’s Mid-American Arc,’ and welcomed Floor
& Decor’s announcement of a 1.4 million square-
foot distribution center in the Savannah market.
GPA’s Mid-American Arc will focus on the
growth of intermodal rail, extending the Port of
Savannah’s reach to capture new markets across the
Southeast and Midwestern U.S. “This enhancement
of our rail capacity is a game-changer in the market
to serve cities ranging in an arc from Atlanta
to Memphis, St. Louis, Chicago and the Ohio
Valley,” Lynch said. “Additional track will allow us
to build unit trains, 10,000 feet long, completely on
terminal, while reducing rail crossings and impact
on the local community.”
Included in the plan is a $128 million project
that will link Garden City Terminal’s two rail yards,
improve efficiency and grow the terminal’s rail lift
capacity to approximately 1 million containers each
year. The project is funded in part by a $44 million
grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Also at the State of the Port, Lynch announced
that flooring retailer Floor & Decor will open a
1.4 million square-foot distribution center in the
Savannah market. The build-to-suit distribution
facility will open by 2018 and be located on 90
acres about 10 miles from the Port of Savannah.
Construction is slated to begin in November
2016. The new center will add and retain115 jobs.
A second phase will add another 1.1 million square
feet, for a total of 2.5 million square feet.
“This is a tremendous vote of confidence in
the Georgia Ports Authority and the future of the
fast-growing market of the U.S. Southeast,” said
GPA Board Chairman Jimmy Allgood. “It comes on
the heels of a year in which millions of square feet
of industrial and warehouse space were opened or
announced across Georgia, accounting for more
than 3,800 port-related jobs, and half a billion
dollars in investment.”
“We are excited to expand our distribution
footprint in Savannah. We looked at other East
Coast opportunities, but the combination of
the Georgia Ports Authority, SEDA and the local
logistics and distribution services could not be
better for Floor & Decor than here in Savannah,”
said Floor & Decor’s Executive Vice President
Supply Chain Brian Robbins. “It’s just a great place
to do business, especially when you look at the
future investment being put into Savannah’s port
and distribution business.”
Duke Realty, which will construct the 1.4
million square-foot facility with Floor & Decor,
worked closely with the Savannah Economic
Development Authority (SEDA) on the transaction,
which represents one of the area’s largest
development projects.

• Congestion-free movement from ship to rail cuts expenses and speeds delivery directly to the customer.
• As the first port of call on many Panama Canal shipping services, the Port of Savannah provides additional assurance of on-time cargo arrival.
The Port of Savannah is the Southeast’s
busiest intermodal gateway. However, the Georgia
Ports Authority is making a series of infrastructure
improvements that set the stage to capture
greater market share.
Key to expanding rail service is a $128M
project linking Garden City Terminal’s two rail yards.
The project, dubbed the Port of Savannah
International Multi-modal Connector, will allow
GPA to build 10,000-foot long unit trains on
terminal without disrupting nearby traffic.
Set for completion in 2020, the rail expansion
will improve efficiency and grow terminal rail
lift capacity to approximately 1 million containers
per year.
Unit train capacity on terminal will build
density into the system, and enable rail providers
CSX and Norfolk Southern to deliver faster,
more frequent rail service to markets along
the Mid-American Arc.
BOLSTERING INTERMODAL STRENGTHS From ship to shore to on-terminal rail,
the speed and efficiency of GPA’s intermodal
services are unmatched. With the addition of the
multi-modal connector, service to Mid-American
Arc cities becomes more competitive.
• GPA already features 25 trains per week to and from Mid-American Arc locations. Unit train capability will provide a new option, delivering reliable, consistent access to the Southeast and Midwest.
• Savannah currently offers the fastest westward transit times in the South Atlantic region, including overnight service to a five-state area – Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina.
• Port of Savannah customers moving containers by rail enjoy superior speed and reliability, with most cargo moving from vessel to rail within 24 hours, and guaranteed 24-hour service for priority boxes.
• Savannah is just over 1,000 miles from Chicago by rail — comparable to other ports that are north of Savannah, but also farther east.
• Savannah rail providers Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation provide double-stack container trains along the entire route between Savannah and the Midwest.
KEY ADVANTAGES TO GPA’S MID-AMERICAN ARC
14GPA ANCHORAGE FALL 2016
FY2016 DEVELOPMENTSThe following companies announced or completed port-related developments across Georgia in FY2016:
Lynch thanked the entire Georgia team,
including Gov. Nathan Deal’s office, the Georgia
Department of Economic Development and SEDA
for their work in winning this competitive project
for the state. Lynch noted the market is still calling
for additional construction, citing a vacancy rate
of just 1 percent for sites greater than 100,000
square feet. “Savannah is the No. 2 growth market
in the nation when it comes to absorption as a
percentage of building inventory. Over the past
15 years, our cargo expansion has outpaced
all other major U.S. container ports. The public
and private investments we are making now
will ensure Savannah remains at the forefront
of global commerce.”
In his first address as executive director,
Lynch also reported on the authority’s performance
during Fiscal Year 2016, which ended in June.
The GPA moved 31 million tons of cargo and
3.6 million twenty-foot equivalent container
units in Fiscal Year 2016. It is the second straight
year that TEU volumes topped 3.6 million.
Despite a decrease of 1.3 percent in containers for
FY16, combined annual TEU growth for FY15-16
reached 15.4 percent.

GPA ADDING 100 ACRESOF AUTO PROCESSING SPACEA
t the annual Brunswick State
of the Port address, GPA
Executive Director Griff Lynch
announced a 100-acre
expansion of the Colonel’s
Island auto terminal, and welcomed Logistec’s
announcement of the completion of 221,000
square feet of wood pellet storage at GPA’s
East River Terminal.
“The additional 100 acres will allow GPA to
grow along with our existing customers, and to
attract additional carmakers to the nation’s second
busiest auto port,” Lynch said. “This new roll-on/
roll-off capacity is part of an initiative to service a
growing market, while staying 20 percent ahead of
our current demand.”
Twenty of the 100 acres are paved and in
use by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, while
International Auto Processing has leased another
49 acres it will occupy by May 2017. Just last
month, the GPA Board of Directors approved the
development of a separate 30-acre parcel, which
should come online in January.
“The Port of Brunswick already supports 9,000
jobs in Glynn and its five surrounding counties,” said
GPA Board Chairman Jimmy Allgood. “Our efforts to
accommodate the demands of auto manufacturers
serving the Southeastern U.S. economy will create
jobs and business opportunities within this region.”
The long-term plan for Colonel’s Island’s
south side, detailed at the State of the Port, will
eventually add 540 acres in GPA-owned land to the
auto processing operation. Another 140 south side
acres owned by Mercedes and International Auto
Processing brings Brunswick’s total vehicle space
to 1,039 acres. “No other autoport in the nation
even approaches that capacity,” Lynch said.
Also at the State of the Port, Lynch announced
that Logistec, an international terminal operating
company, has just opened two new warehouses
totaling 221,675 square feet for wood pellet
storage along the Brunswick River.
“These modern buildings are a part of
Logistec’s commitment to upgrade and expand
its dry bulk facilities in Brunswick. Our terminal is
ideally suited to biomass cargo handling, and we
look forward to working with the Georgia Ports
Authority and our customers to meet long-term
growth demands,” said Madeleine Paquin, President
and CEO of Logistec. “We are committed to doing
business here for the long term. With the addition
of these warehouses, we can store higher volumes
and have increased our throughput capacity.”
Logistec opens 221K square feet of new wood pellet capacity
The ‘MOL Benefactor’ was also the highest capacity vessel to ever call at the Port of Savannah
he MOL Benefactor is the first vessel to call on Savannah through the new locks of the expanded Panama Canal. At a capacity of 10,100 twenty-foot equivalent container units, the Benefactor was also the largest ship ever to
call the Port of Savannah. The massive container ship, moving over 3,000 containers at GPA’s
Garden City terminal, is also the first Savannah call of the G6 Alliance’s new
NYX service. The East Coast rotation of the new service includes the ports
of New York/New Jersey, Virginia and Savannah, exclusively deploying vessels
in the 10,000-TEU range.
“The arrival of the MOL Benefactor today ushers in a new era of larger
vessels and services that will increase capacity, volumes and economic
opportunities for Georgia and this region,” said Griff Lynch, GPA’s Executive
Director. “GPA is well-positioned to handle the larger vessels and greater
volumes due to the scale and scope of our operations.”
With eight new neo-panamax cranes on order, GPA will have a total of
30 ship-to-shore cranes by 2018. GPA has also added 30 rubber-tired gantry
cranes — used to handle containers on terminal — for a current fleet of 146
machines — the most of any single container terminal in the U.S. “Over the
next six months to a year, we expect a higher ratio of 8,000- to 10,000- TEU
container ships among our vessels calls. Within two years, we expect market
shifts to send 12,000-TEU vessels to the U.S. East Coast,” Lynch added.
To better accommodate the larger vessels via water, the Savannah Harbor
Expansion Project (SHEP) will deepen the inner harbor to 47 feet and the outer
harbor to 49 feet at mean low water. The outer portion of the harbor is now
15 percent complete with work progressing daily.

‘GRAY’ CHASSIS POOL AGREEMENTCCM ensures reliable fleet access
“The gray pool model works for the South Atlantic, and continues to meet and
exceed our expectations for sufficient, safe chassis available at any time,” said
GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch. “This new agreement secures the future of
the gray pool in our region.”
Lynch said the arrangement provides shipping lines, trucking companies and
cargo owners a level of confidence that chassis operations will remain consistent
and reliable. “Other ports often have multiple, restricted pools,” he said. “In that
type of operation, chassis may only be used to serve certain customers, and must
be returned to specific locations before work for another customer may begin.”
“A single gray chassis pool with full interchangeability improves both the
efficiency and consistency of port operations,” said Jon Poelma, senior vice
president of operations for CCM. “End customers can negotiate directly with the
chassis provider of their choice and then select any chassis on terminal. Such
flexibility in choice is difficult elsewhere due to a lack of a single pool serving the
region. We are proud to be a part of GPA’s success, and pleased to continue our
longstanding relationship.”
John Trent, GPA senior director of strategic operations and safety, said the
common chassis fleet enhances port efficiency.
“The gray fleet is another example of our operational model: a single-
terminal complex in which customers and cargo move effortlessly through
our gates, maintenance and service areas,” Trent said. “Our value proposition is
that we provide faster, more efficient and cost effective services on a larger
scale than the competition.”
GPA’s agreement with the South Atlantic Chassis Pool includes allocating
space to park chassis on terminal, for the convenience of motor carriers.
“The gray pool accentuates the benefits of a common, single-terminal
complex,” Lynch said. “The ‘one-stop shopping’ at our 1,200-acre Garden City
Terminal is really the optimum in efficiency.”
CCM was formed as an industry utility by the Ocean Carrier Equipment
Management Association, Inc. (OCEMA), an association of 19 major international
ocean carriers. CCM pools are based on a cooperative model developed
by OCEMA that emphasizes low barriers to entry, service reliability, safety
and cost effectiveness.
The Georgia Ports Authority has extended its multiyear agreement with the South Atlantic Chassis Pool of Consolidated Chassis Management (CCM) to provide the region with a “gray” chassis pool, a fleet of chassis that can be used by any trucking line to serve any port terminal in the Southeastern U.S.

John S. James Co. Celebrates 75th YearThe John S. James Company, founded in Savannah, is celebrating its 75th year of operation.
John Sullivan James left school after the eighth grade for the shipping industry in 1924. He worked for several companies before settling with Strachan Shipping – from which he eventually struck out on his own. At that time, logistics was a one-stop shop: Shipping companies
represented their own vessels, as well as handling customs brokerage
and freight forwarding for cargo owners. But that led to a potential conflict
of interest. In the event of damaged freight, the shipping line could end
up representing its own interests and that of the cargo owner.
In the late 1930s, Strachan decided to divest itself of the freight
forwarding and customs work – tasks James had been performing. The
company set him up with an office and a typewriter and boxes of client files.
From that beginning, the John S. James Company was formed in 1941.
“His first official shipment at his own company was a cadaver to
Brazil,” said Thomas James, son of John and now patriarch of the family
company. “Someone had died in Florida, but they didn’t have service
to Brazil down there, so they sent the body to Savannah by express train
and it was shipped out from here.”
Over the past three-quarters of a century, the company has
grown from one man and his typewriter to 122 employees and six offices
across the Southeast.
“We maintain corresponding partnership agreements with
a multitude of companies in the United States and around the globe,
enabling us to handle shipments to and from all international ports,”
said Len James, Chief Financial Officer and part of the third generation
in the business. “We also have agents placed in the domestic offices
of major manufacturing clients.”
Today, the company’s services cover not only ensuring regulatory
compliance for imports and exports, but also third-party logistics duties
such as booking space on vessels, trains and trucks.
“Additionally, we do foreign trade zone administration, combining
inventory management and customs administration,” said Chief
Operating Officer Jill James. “We file the weekly reports required to
track the depletion of inventory and the production of finished products
entering U.S. commerce.”
The company also does consulting work and auditing for other
companies’ customs processes.
From left to right: Len James, Chief Financial Officer; Thomas James; Jill James, Chief Operating Officer
Handling over 50,000 import and export entries, representing more
than 100,000 containers per year, the company serves several business
sectors, including large chemical companies and automakers, among others.
Len said, however, that the company is also attentive to small operators.
“We pride ourselves on being able to offer personalized service
to our clients on a global scale,” Len said. “No matter if they are a
Fortune 100 company or a small, individual importer or exporter.”
In May, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker presented
the John S. James Co. with the President’s “E” Award for Exports at a
ceremony in Washington, D.C. The President’s “E” Award is the highest
recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution
to the expansion of U.S. exports.
