GEORGIA FIRE CHIEFS

CERTIFICATION

PROGRAM

SEPTEMBER 2015

Introduction

By: Dwayne Jamison

1st Vice President - Georgia Association of Fire Chiefs

The idea of Certifying Georgia Fire Chiefs had been discussed by the Georgia Fire Service

for many years. At the Georgia Fire & Emergency Service Conference & Expo hosted in

Dalton in 2012, the membership of the GAFC voted to pursue the issue and develop a

program to certify Georgia Fire Chiefs.

The GAFC Executive Board discussed the issue and President Robert Singletary appointed

the 1st Vice President to establish and head up a Task Force to develop the program. Fire

Service members were selected to be Task Force members based on experience and a wide

range of department make-up from Volunteer, Career, and Combination Fire Departments

across the state.

In 2014 the Task Force had their first meeting at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center

and determined that there was a need for such certifications and identified 3 different types

of certification they felt were needed in Georgia. Over the course of several meetings,

many days were spent by members reviewing recommendations by consultants, other

state’s programs, nationally recognized programs, and existing Ga. Fire Academy research.

The Chief Fire Officer Task Force developed the following program to insure that the fire

departments in the state of Georgia have qualified, credentialed, and professional leaders

and managers overseeing their departments and personnel. The program is broken into 3

types of certification: Georgia Volunteer Fire Chief Certification, Georgia Chief Fire

Officer Certification, and Georgia Fire Chief Certification based on the vast diversity of the

Georgia Fire Service and the needs of the various types of departments.
