SOUTH GEORGIA ARCHIVES – HISTORY MUSEUM – SCIENCE MUSEUM – WETHERBEE PLANETARIUM GEORGIA MUSEUM OF SURVEYING & MAPPING

Greetings Museum Professionals! On behalf of Thronateeska Heritage Center I welcome the members of the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries to Albany as we celebrate the conference theme – “Museums For The People.” Our partners for this year’s annual meeting include the Flint RiverQuarium, The Albany Museum of Art, the Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau and Merry Acres Inn and Event Center.

We are honored to share our community and institutions with all of you. Most of your time will be spent at Merry Acres Inn and Event Center attending a variety of informative sessions and workshops. You will visit Thronateeska Heritage Center located in the heart of downtown Albany. Thronateeska’s campus includes the History Museum, Science Museum, Wetherbee Planetarium, South Georgia Archives and Georgia Museum of Surveying and Mapping.

You will also get a chance to visit the Albany Museum of Art and Flint RiverQuarium. As happens at many conferences, we will not get to experience all of Albany’s art, cultural and living museums. We do invite you to come early or stay after the conference to enjoy our South Georgia hospitality.

Have a great conference!

Tommy Gregors Executive Director

Dear GAMG Members,

I am so pleased to welcome you to the 2016 Annual GAMG Conference in Albany, Georgia. We are excited to have so many diverse institutions represented and expect it to be a productive and thought-provoking event.

We offer six workshops this year on Wednesday at our host hotel, Merry Acres. We invite you that evening to enjoy the hospitality arranged by our Albany host committee and visit three area sites during our Progressive Dinner. We have a full day of sessions on Thursday, beginning with a breakfast led Susan Perry of the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC). Her talk on “Trends in Southeastern Museums” promises to be a great way to start the day. That event will be followed by morning sessions and a lunch and keynote by Georgia’s First Lady Sandra Deal, who will talk about her new book, Memories of the Mansion: The Story of Georgia Governor’s Mansion.

Thursday night is our silent auction, a lively event that raises money for our MUSE program. We continue with sessions Friday morning and close with our Awards Luncheon. This is a very special time when we recognize the accomplishments of our peers around the state.

A special thanks to this year’s host committee, led by Tommy Gregors. We are grateful for their assistance and hospitality. We are pleased to be in Albany, and I am honored to preside over my last annual meeting. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as GAMG’s president for the past four years and am pleased to hand the baton to Dr. Carissa DiCindo of the Georgia Museum of Art, who will take the helm. Happy New Year to you all.

Warm regards,

Catherine M. Lewis, Ph.D. Assistant Vice President of Museums, Archives & Rare Books at Kennesaw State University & President, Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries

Untangling the Challenge of Deaccessioning M E R R Y A C R E S | D O U G H E R T Y R O O M

Deaccessioning doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Many museums and institutions struggle to find space and budget for items that no longer fit into collecting scopes. Luckily there is a solution! Deaccessioning items can be controversial, but is an excellent way to create space, keep your collection focused, and sometimes even gain funds for obtaining new collection items. Four museum professionals will present on their past and current experiences with deaccessioning, followed by a breakout small group discussion of several scenarios that have happened to the panel members.Matt Davis Old Governor’s Mansion [email protected] McCay Marietta Museum of History [email protected] Miller Georgia Museum of Art [email protected] Hague Atlanta History Center [email protected]

Adventures in Preservation: Corralling the Martha Berry Museum’s CollectionM E R R Y A C R E S | G A Z E B O

Located on the Berry family’s historic Oak Hill estate, the Martha Berry Museum maintains the works of art and historic artifacts of Berry College. The variety of media and materials is staggering; ranging from indigenous Appalachian textiles to palatial 18th-century furniture, the collection includes antebellum couture, automobiles, Renaissance paintings, and Martha Berry’s personal effects. A cataloging initiative begun in 2012 has led the curatorial staff on an odyssey of conservation—every object has presented specific challenges regarding care and storage. This informational session will provide an overview of the Berry collection with an emphasis upon conservation lessons. Tim Brown Martha Berry Museum [email protected]
