Speaker Biographies

Madeleine K. Albright is Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy firm, and Chair of Albright Capital Management LLC, an affiliated investment advisory firm focused on emerging markets. Dr. Albright received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Obama on May 29, 2012. She was the 64th Secretary of State of the United States. In 1997, Dr. Albright was named the first female Secretary of State and became, at that time, the highest-ranking woman in the history of the US government. From 1993 to 1997, Dr. Albright served as the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations and was a member of the President’s Cabinet. She is a Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service. Dr. Albright chairs the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and serves as president of the Truman Scholarship Foundation and on the US Defense Department’s Defense Policy Board. She is currently at work on a book, Facism: A Warning, and is the author of numerous New York Times bestsellers, including Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 (2012). Dr. Albright received a BA with honors from Wellesley College, and master’s and doctorate degrees from Columbia University’s Department of Public Law and Government, as well as a certificate from its Russian Institute.

Anthony Clark Arend is Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and Graduate Affairs in the School of Foreign Service, and Professor of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He served as Director of the Master of Science in Foreign Service program from 2008-2017. With Professor Christopher C. Joyner, he founded the Institute for International Law & Politics at Georgetown and

served as co-director of the Institute from 2003-2008. He is also an adjunct professor of law at the Georgetown University Law Center. Prior to coming to Georgetown, he was a Senior Fellow at the Center for National Security Law at the University of Virginia School of Law. He has also served as an articles editor for the Virginia Journal of International Law. Dr. Arend’s teaching interests are in the areas of international law, international organizations, international relations, international legal philosophy, and constitutional law of US foreign relations. Dr. Arend received a PhD and an MA in foreign affairs from the Woodrow Wilson Department of Government and Foreign Affairs of the University of Virginia. He received a BSFS, magna cum laude, from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Barbara K. Bodine is Director of the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy and Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy. Ambassador Bodine’s 33-year Foreign Service career was spent primarily in the Middle East, with a focus on security and counterterrorism. She served as US Ambassador to Yemen from 1997 through much of 2001, and also served in Kuwait and Iraq. In 1991, she received the Secretary of State’s Award for Valor for her work in occupied Kuwait. After leaving the Foreign Service, Ambassador Bodine was a Fellow at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. From 2007-2014 she was a Lecturer in Public and International Affairs and Director of the Scholars in the Nation’s Service Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Diplomacy. Ambassador Bodine earned

a BA in political science and Asian studies  magna cum laude from the University of California, Santa Barbara and she received a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. 

Marc L. Busch is the Karl F. Landegger Professor of International Business Diplomacy at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Professor of Government, and Professor of Business Administration at Georgetown University. He is an expert on international trade policy and law and author of the book Trade Warriors and articles in the American Journal of Political Science, American Journal of Sociology, British Journal of Political Science, Fordham International Law Journal, International Organization, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of World Trade, World Politics, and World Trade Review. He serves as a member of the Industry Trade Advisory Committee on Standards and Technical Trade Barriers (ITAC-16), a public-private group managed by the US Department of Commerce and United States Trade Representative. He has previously taught at Queen’s University and Harvard, and has received several teaching awards, including MBA Professor of the Module at Georgetown. In 2010, Forbes Magazine named his course, “Business, Government and the Global Economy,” to its list of the Top 10 Most Innovative MBA Courses in the United States. Dr. Busch earned his BA (Honors) in politics from Queen’s University, an MA in international affairs from the University of Toronto, and an MPhil and PhD in political science from Columbia University.

Daniel Byman is Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs and Professor in the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. He is also the Research Director of the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. Dr. Byman has served as

a professional staff member with both the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks on the United States (The 9/11 Commission) and the Joint 9/11 Inquiry Staff of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees. He has also worked as the Research Director of the Center for Middle East Public Policy at the RAND Corporation and as an analyst of the Middle East for the US intelligence community. Dr. Byman has written widely on a range of topics related to terrorism, international security, and the Middle East. His publications have appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, International Security, and numerous other scholarly, policy, and popular journals. His latest book is Al Qaeda, the Islamic State and the Global Jihadist Movement: What Everyone Needs to Know (2015). Earlier books include A High Price: The Triumphs and Failures of Israeli Counterterrorism (2011). Dr. Byman received his BA in religion from Amherst College and his PhD in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Shaun Casey is Director of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs and Professor of the Practice at Georgetown’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. He previously served as US Special Representative for Religion and Global Affairs and Director of the US Department of State’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs. He has also held positions at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., the Center for American Progress, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Casey has written on the ethics of the war in Iraq, as well the role of religion in American presidential politics. He is the author of The Making of a Catholic President: Kennedy vs. Nixon 1960 (2009) and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Political Theology (forthcoming, with Michael Kessler); he currently is writing a book on ethics and international politics tentatively titled  Niebuhr’s Children. Casey holds a BA from

Abilene Christian University, MPA from Harvard Kennedy School, and an MDiv and ThD in religion and society from Harvard Divinity School. Mo Elleithee is the founding Executive Director of Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service, the  first institute of its kind in the nation’s capital. Before launching the institute in 2015, he spent two decades as one of the top communications strategists in the Democratic Party, most recently as Communications  Director and chief spokesman of the Democratic National Committee. A veteran of four presidential campaigns, Elleithee was Senior Spokesman and Traveling Press Secretary on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign. He served as a senior advisor and strategist for Senator Tim Kaine’s campaigns for governor and the US Senate, and has worked on numerous other statewide and local races in every region of the country. A frequent political commentator on television and radio, Mo was named a FOX News contributor in 2016. He was a founding partner of Hilltop Public Solutions, one of Washington’s leading  political consulting and public affairs firms. He has been recognized on Washington  Life Magazine’s “Power 100” list; as a “Top Influencer” by Campaigns & Elections Magazine; and was featured on Washingtonian Magazine’s “Guest List.” Elleithee earned his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown’s School of Foreign  Service and an MA in political management from The George Washington University. Robert Gallucci is Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at Georgetown’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. Ambassador Gallucci served as Dean of the School of Foreign Service for 13 years until he left in July 2009 to become president of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He was appointed dean in 1996, after 21 years of distinguished service

in a variety of government positions, focusing on international security. As Ambassador-at-Large and Special Envoy for the US Department of State, he dealt with the threats posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction. He was chief US negotiator during the North Korean nuclear crisis of 1994, and served as Assistant Secretary of State for Political Military Affairs and as Deputy Executive Chairman of the UN Special Commission overseeing the disarmament of Iraq following the first Gulf War. During his tenure as dean, Gallucci led in the creation of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar and also oversaw the creation of the Program for Jewish Civilization and the Mortara Center for International Studies. His publications include Going Critical: The First North Korean Nuclear Crisis (2004) with Joel Wit and Daniel Poneman. Ambassador Gallucci earned his bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and his master’s and doctoral degrees at Brandeis University.

Joel Hellman is Dean of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Development. He became dean in July 2015 after 25 years working on some of the most complex issues of governance, conflict and the political economy of development as both a scholar and practitioner. He served at the World Bank in many senior roles including Chief Institutional Economist; Director of the Center for Conflict, Security and Development in Nairobi, Kenya, where he led the Bank’s engagement  with the most challenging fragile and conflict-affected states around the world; and coordinator of the World Bank’s response in Indonesia to the devastating Asian tsunami. He was the Senior Political Counselor at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, leading its political engagement and analysis on Russia,

Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. As a scholar, Dr. Hellman was a political science professor at Harvard University and Columbia University, focusing on the politics of economic reform. His numerous publications include “Governance Gone Local: Does Decentralization Improve Accountability” with Jose Edgardo Campos (2005). Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he is a graduate of Williams College. He has a PhD from Columbia University and an MPhil from Oxford University.

Nasser S. Judeh was appointed to the Senate of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on July 9, 2017. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to 2017 as well as Deputy Prime Minister from 2015 to 2017. He was the longest-serving Foreign Minister in Jordan’s  history. Judeh previously held cabinet positions serving as Minister of Information (1998-1999), Minister of State for Media and Communications (2007-2009), and official spokesman for the government of Jordan (from 1998-1999, 2005-2007, and 2007-2009). He presided over the United Nations Security Council several times during Jordan’s two-year membership on the Council in 2015 and  2016. Jordan also held the presidency of the 143rd Arab League ministerial council for six months in 2015. Earlier in his career, Judeh was the Director General of the Jordan Radio and Television Corporation (the national broadcaster) (1994–1998) and served in the Royal Hashemite Court from 1985-1992 during the reign of King Hussein. He established and directed the Jordan Information Bureau in London from 1992-1994. In September 2017, UN Secretary-General António Guterres invited Judeh to join the High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation. Judeh graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Peter F. Krogh is the president of the Seal Abatement Coalition headquartered on Nantucket Island, where he resides. Previously he was, for 15 years, Distinguished Professor of International Affairs at the Walsh School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University and, prior to that, Dean of the Walsh School of Foreign Service for 25 years. He has been honored by the governments of Austria and Germany, and by Georgetown University with an honorary degree and an endowed chair in his name. The honors program of the Walsh School also bears his name. While at Georgetown, Dr. Krogh moderated 225 PBS television programs on foreign affairs that are now catalogued in the Dean Peter Krogh Digital Foreign Affairs Archives in the university’s library. Dr. Krogh served on the board of the Carlisle Companies and on the boards of multiple foreign affairs organizations. He has published numerous articles on American foreign policy and diplomacy and, recently, a book entitled From the Dean’s Chair: A Decade of Reflections on World Affairs. Dr. Krogh is a graduate of Harvard University and received his master’s and PhD degrees at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

Joanna Lewis is Associate Professor of Science, Technology and International Affairs (STIA) at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. Her research focuses on energy, environment, and innovation in China, including renewable energy industry development and climate change policy. She leads a National Science Foundation-funded project on International Partnerships and Technological Leapfrogging in China’s Clean Energy Sector. Her recent book, Green Innovation in China: China’s Wind Power Industry and the Global Transition to a Low-Carbon Economy, was awarded the 2014 Harold and Margaret Sprout Award by the International Studies Association for best book of the year in environmental studies. Dr. Lewis is a non-resident faculty affiliate

with the China Energy Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She also serves as an international adviser to the Energy Foundation China Sustainable Energy Program in Beijing, and is a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Fifth Assessment Report. She serves on the advisory boards of the Asia Society’s Center on US-China Relations and the American Council on Renewable Energy’s US-China Program. Dr. Lewis has a PhD and MA from the University of California, Berkeley, where she focused on energy and resources; and an AB from Duke University in environmental science and policy.

Helen McNeill  has been the consultant to the Georgetown Leadership Seminar since 2000. She also consults for other academic programs and international groups. From 1992 until 1999, she worked for the National Trust for Historic Preservation as the International Affairs Program Director at the Woodrow Wilson House and has also held posts at the Meridian International Center, the Environmental Film Festival, and at the Washington National Cathedral. She holds a BA from Rosemont College and an MA from the University of Pennsylvania, and studied at the University of Vienna.

Mahmoud Mohieldin is the World Bank Group Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda, United Nations Relations, and Partnerships. Before joining the World Bank, Mohieldin held numerous senior positions in the government of Egypt, including Minister of Investment from 2004 until 2010. He also served on several boards of directors, including the Central Bank of Egypt, as well as in the banking and corporate sector. He was a member of the Commission on Growth and Development and was selected as a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum. He is a professor of economics and finance at Cairo University, an honorary professor at

Durham University and a member of the Advisory Board of the Durham Business School. He also held leading positions in national and regional research centers and think tanks. He has authored numerous publications and articles in English and Arabic in leading journals in the fields of international finance, economics, and development. Dr. Mohieldin received his doctorate in economics from the University of Warwick, MSc in economics and social policy analysis from the University of York, and BSc in economics, first in the order of merit, from Cairo University. He is a member of the Georgetown Leadership Seminar class of 2003.

Irfan Nooruddin is Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Professor of Indian Politics and Faculty Chair in the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown. He is also a member of the School’s Asian Studies Program, directs the Georgetown India Initiative, and advises the student-run Georgetown-India Dialogue. His most recent book – co-authored with Thomas Edward Flores – is Elections in Hard Times: Building Stronger Democracies in the 21st Century (2016). He is also the author of Coalition Politics and Economic Development: Credibility and the Strength of Weak Governments (2011). Professor Nooruddin specializes in the study of comparative economic development and policymaking, democratization and democratic institutions, and international institutions. He has been a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and is a team member with Lokniti: Program on Comparative Democracy at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, New Delhi. From 2003-2014 Dr. Nooruddin was Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at The Ohio State University. He earned a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University and an MA and PhD from the University of Michigan.

Thomas R. Pickering is Chairman of the Board of Advisers of the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. He holds the personal rank of Career Ambassador, the highest rank in the US Foreign Service. In a diplomatic career spanning five decades, he was US Ambassador to the Russian Federation, India, Israel, El Salvador, Nigeria, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. From 1989 to 1992 he was Ambassador and US Representative to the United Nations in New York. His last assignment with the Department of State was as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 1997 to 2000. Upon leaving government, Ambassador Pickering served as Senior Vice President for International Relations and a member of the Executive Council of the Boeing Company for five and one-half years. He is currently Vice Chairman at Hills and Company, which provides advice and counsel to a number of major US enterprises. Ambassador Pickering received his bachelor’s degree with high honors in history from Bowdoin College and his master’s from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He received a second master’s degree while a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He speaks French, Spanish, and Swahili and has some fluency in Arabic, Hebrew, and Russian.

James P. Seevers is Director of Studies and the Georgetown Leadership Seminar at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD) in the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He runs the undergraduate certificate in diplomatic studies, convenes the undergraduate international negotiation lab simulation course, manages ISD’s student fellows, and coordinates the undergraduate and graduate teaching of ISD’s visiting practitioners. He also directs the annual Georgetown Leadership Seminar, teaches in the Master of Science in Foreign Service and Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service

programs, and conducts co-curricular programs related to diplomacy for the Georgetown School of Foreign Service in Qatar. Prior to joining the Institute in 2005, Mr. Seevers was a State Department career foreign service officer, gaining wide-ranging experience through his work as a political officer on South Asia, Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Capitol Hill. He also has extensive congressional experience in the Senate and Congressional Research Service. Mr. Seevers is a graduate of Tufts University with a BA in international relations and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School.

Angela Stent is Director of the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies and Professor of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University.  She is the author of  The Limits of Partnership: US-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century, for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the Practice of America Diplomacy. She is also a Senior Fellow (non-resident) at the Brookings Institution and co-chairs its Hewett Forum on Post-Soviet Affairs. From 2004-2006 she served as National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council. From 1999 to 2001, she served in the Office of Policy Planning at the US Department of State. Stent’s academic work focuses on the triangular political and economic relationship between the United States, Russia, and Europe. She is a member of the senior advisory panel for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a contributing editor to Survival. She is on several editorial boards including the Journal of Cold War Studies and World Policy Journal, and she has served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Russia and Central Asia. Linda Thomas-Greenfield is Distinguished Resident Fellow in African Affairs at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service. She received the 2017 Hubert H. Humphrey Public Leadership Award from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs in recognition of her three decades of work promoting the values of humanitarianism and responsible global engagement. From 2013 to 2017, Ambassador (ret.) Thomas-Greenfield served as the Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs. In this capacity, she led the bureau in the Department of State focused on the development and management of US policy toward sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to this appointment, she served as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources (2012-2013), leading a team of approximately 400 employees who handled the full range of personnel functions for the State Department’s 70,000-strong workforce – from recruitment and hiring, to evaluations, promotions, and retirement. Ambassador Thomas Greenfield’s 34-year diplomatic career includes an ambassadorship to Liberia (2008-2012) and service as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (2004-2006). She earned a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University and a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, where she also did work towards a doctorate.

Casimir Yost returned  to Georgetown and the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy in 2013 as a Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor. He is currently teaching an undergraduate seminar entitled “War and Presidential Decision Making.” His graduate seminar on “Forecasting Global Trends: Implications for Grand Strategy” draws on his work at the National Intelligence Council. Mr. Yost writes and lectures on the Middle East, East Asia, and US foreign and intelligence policies. He served  on the National Intelligence Council from 2009 to 2012 as Director of the Strategic Futures Group, where he led a team of senior intelligence community analysts conducting integrated assessments of the strategic environment to identify emerging risks and opportunities for the United States. In May 2013, Mr. Yost was awarded the National Intelligence Superior Service Medal. From 1994-2009, he taught in the Master of Science in Foreign Service Program (MSFS) at Georgetown University and directed the Institute for the Study. Mr. Yost has worked for the Asia Foundation in San Francisco and was president of the World Affairs Council of Northern California. From 1977 to 1986, he held staff positions in the US Senate, including with the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. He is a graduate of Hamilton College, has earned a MSFS from Georgetown University, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

MOHAMMED ABDULAZIZ AL-KHULAIFI – Qatar

Mohammed Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi serves as the Dean and Associate Professor of Commercial Law at Qatar University’s College of Law, where he received his bachelor’s in law degree. He formerly served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Assistant Professor of Commercial Law at Qatar University. Additionally, he works as a lawyer for the Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi Law Office and previously served as a legal consultant for the Qatar Financial Regulatory Authority. Mr. Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi is a member of the Qatari Lawyers Association and participated in the Rising Leaders Program for the Qatar Leadership Center from 2014-2015. His publications include “The Legal System of Anti-Competition Law in Qatar” (2016) and a forthcoming volume entitled Bankruptcy Regulations in the State of Qatar. MUHAMMAD (DATTIJO) SANI ABDULLAHI – Nigeria

Muhammad (Dattijo) Sani Abdullahi is a Commissioner in the Ministry of Budget and Planning in the Kaduna State government. He focuses on fiscal strategy and coordinating the implementation of state budget monitoring, and specializes in development policy formulation, public finance, and project implementation. Internationally, Mr. Abdullahi has served as policy advisor to the Executive Office of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and UNDP consultant to the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals-UNDP. Within Nigeria, he has held positions as an economist and Deputy National Program Manager for the Nigerian Presidency and an economic adviser

for the Nigeria Governor’s Forum. Mr. Abdullahi is a UK Chevening Scholar and Archbishop Tutu Leadership Institute Fellow and has authored numerous works. MAGDALENA BRZOZOWSKA – Poland

Magdalena Brzozowska is a human rights lawyer and chief specialist in the Department of International Cooperation and Human Rights at the Polish Ministry of Justice. Her international career has included serving as plenipotentiary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a correspondent for the freedom of media at the Helsinki Foundation of Human Rights, and a rule of law advisor for the Operational Command of the Armed Forces at NATO International Security Assistance Forces Operation. In her role as editor of the Polish Ministry of Justice newsletter concerning the European Court of Human Rights case law, she authored Rights to Compensation for Unjustified Temporary Detention in the Light of Standards of the European Court of Human Rights (2017). Ms. Brzozowska has received numerous honors including the NATO Award for serving with ISAF Operation (2011), the Star of Afghanistan (2010-2014) and the Brown Cross of Merit (2011). Lourdes Germán is Director of International and Institute-Wide Initiatives for the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. Akua Gyekye is Facebook’s Public Policy Manager for Africa. Christian Pfeiffer is founder and Managing Director of Pfeiffer Strategic Positioning. He previous served as the Senior Manager and Head of Marketing for the Consulting Function at KPMG AG Consulting, and also served as Partner and Head of Communications at Kerkhoff Consulting GmbH. Mr. Pfeiffer received his MA in political science, economics, and history from the Universität Osnabrück, and also studied international affairs at Versalius College Brussels.

FABIO RUA – Brazil

Fabio Rua is IBM program lead and head of the Government and Regulatory Department for Latin America. Mr. Rua has also worked for Vale, Embraer, and General Electric. Vitaliy Shabunin is the head of the board of the Anti-Corruption Action Centre where he works to unite politicians, journalists, and lawyers in Ukraine’s efforts to combat corruption and address the country’s state-building barriers. He previously served as Ukrainian MP Lesia Orobet’s head of staff, and as Head of the All-Ukrainian Youth NGO Foundation of Regional Initiatives (FRI). He has worked with a number of civil society groups in Ukraine, including the All-Ukraine civil network OPORA, and the Rivne Local Council.

CIATA ARMAH STEVENS – Liberia

Ciata Armah Stevens is the Assistant Minister and Special Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Republic of Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She previously served in Liberia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations as Special Assistant to the Ambassador for the Post 2015 Development Agenda. She also is an “ambassador” for the Institute of Social Studies at Erasmus University in The Hague and was national director for Wesleyan Youth and Young Adults of Liberia for over two years. Ulrich Stoll is Vice Chairman of Festo’s Supervisory Board. Mr. Stoll previously served as Director of Strategic Initiatives for Biogen Idec, assistant to the chairman at MS Management Service AG, and was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000. TOMASZ SZPIKOWSKI – Poland

BERNARDO THEOTÓNIO-PEREIRA – Portugal

Bernardo Theotónio-Pereira is the founder of Firma, a Portuguese business agency, and a Guest Professor at the Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon. Mr. Theotónio-Pereira co-founded the Community of the Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) Bank, Financial Institutions, and Security Firm Association, and served as vice president of the Executive Board. He co-founded and served as President of the Board Directors of Grupo Agrocortex, SA, a group specializing in sustainable management of tropical forests; as well as partner

and executive board manager of Domínio Capital SGPS, SA, an investment firm specializing in energy, real estate, and financial markets. He is an honorary member of the Portuguese and Chinese Young Entrepreneurs Chamber and has served as Portugal’s representative to the Global SME Business Summit. Mr. Theotónio-Pereira holds a law degree from the Catholic University of Portugal. He also participated in a private equity program at the University of Oxford Saïd Business School. He is currently working on a PhD in development studies/national strategy at the University of Lisbon.

ARISTOTLE TZIAMPIRIS – Greece

Aristotle Tziampiris is Professor of International Relations and Chair of the Department of International and European Studies at the University of Piraeus. He serves as an academic advisor to the Hellenic American Leadership Council and is a Standing Fellow at New York University’s Remarque Institute, where he spent 2013-2014 as a Visiting Fellow. He has served as director of the Center of International and European Affairs at the University of Piraeus and on the Scientific Board of the Institute of Defence Analyses and IAA board of directors. Dr. Tziampiris has published numerous works including The Emergence of Israeli-Greek Cooperation (2015), Kosovo’s Endgame: Sovereignty and Stability in Western Balkans (2006), and essays on international relations and Greek foreign policy in the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean. Dr. Tziampiris earned his BA from Middlebury College and both his MSc and PhD from London School of Economics.

PAULA VILÉN – Finland

In September 2017, Paula Vilén became the US correspondent, based in Washington, DC, for the Finnish Broadcasting Company. From 2012-2017

she was a foreign news correspondent on US affairs for the Finnish Broadcasting Company. Ms. Vilén specializes in the United States, international law, strategy, and security policy. She holds a master’s in journalism and mass communications, cum laude, from University of Tampere, and also studied at Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany for language and EU studies, National Defence College for strategy and security policy, and the University of Helsinki for international law.

LAURI VOIONMAA – Finland

Lauri Voionmaa is a career diplomat currently serving as Counselor at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland focusing on the US-Finnish political relationship. Mr. Voionmaa has worked in security policy, West African-Finland relations, and NATO and EU affairs. His prior positions include working as Counselor to the Mission of Finland to NATO in Brussels where he was responsible for the implementation of Finland’s Partnership Policy with NATO (Baltic Sea security, strategic exercises, and operations). He served as Deputy Head of Mission in Abuja, Nigeria, as part of the Permanent Representation of Finland to the European Union in Brussels, First Secretary of the European Affairs Department, and a Political Department attaché for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and also worked in Finland’s Ministry of Justice. Mr. Voionmaa received his LLM from the College of Europe in Brüges and his Maîtrise en Droit (master’s in law) from Université Panthéon-Assas. He has also studied in London and Strasbourg.

PRIYO WASESO – Indonesia

Priyo Waseso is a police senior superintendent currently serving as police attaché in the Indonesian embassy in Thailand. His efforts to combat

transnational crime include facilitating cooperation and joint investigations between the Indonesian police and Thai law enforcement agencies. His numerous previous postings include chief of police in the Purworejo district of central Java and head of analysis in the intelligence directorate of the North Sumatra provincial police. Mr. Waseso has a bachelor’s degree in electronics and instrumentation from Gadjah Mada University and a master’s degree in public policy from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo, Japan.

SILVERIO ZEBRAL-FILHO – Brazil/Italy

Silverio Zebral-Filho, in his position at the Organization of American States (OAS), serves as the head of the Government Innovation Unit and as Academic Coordinator to the OAS School of Governance. Mr. Filho is an adjunct professor in the Latin American Governance Program at The George Washington University, in addition to holding a position in the Graduate School of Political Management. Mr. Filho is a guest lecturer with Georgetown University’s Latin American Board. He was formerly a senior development economist for the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) and has served in advisory positions for business associations such as the China Working Group of the Brazilian Industrial Confederation. Mr. Zebral-Filho’s forthcoming book is entitled Innovación. Cambio y Reforma en Gestión Pública ?que, porque, cual, como y quien? Mr. Zebral-Filho received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Candido Mendes University, an MA from The Graduate Institute of International Development Studies, an MPS in political management from The George Washington University, and an MBA from IE Business School. He has completed numerous other academic and professional education programs, including a Harvard Law School program on mediation and conflict resolution.

RUIJUN (REGENT) ZHANG – China

Ruijun (Regent) Zhang is Director of the Washington office of Huawai where he is responsible for government and public affairs. He was Director of Huawei America Movil from 2014-2017 and Director of Huawei MTS in Moscow from 2013-2014. Mr. Zhang joined Huawei in 1992 as a software engineer. In 2000, he began working globally, leading Huawei’s offices in Bangladesh (2000-2002), Japan (2003), and Nigeria (2006-2009). He was also vice president of Huawei’s regional office in South Africa in 2004-2005 and vice president of Huawei’s Pacific regional office from 2009-2013. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computers and telecommunications from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

MOUATAZ ZREIKA – Australia

Mouataz Zreika is CEO of iTech Management Consultancy and RMM Solutions in addition to serving as Director of Facilities Management for Alexander Mac. Prior to these appointments, Mr. Zreika held the position of senior operations manager for United Enterprises Australia (UEA). He holds memberships in Engineers Australia, The Open Data Institute (ODI), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). His published work includes a co-authored article on “Applying Hybrid Graph Drawing and Clustering Methods on Stock Investment Analysis,” in addition to “How Does Foreign Direct Investment Affect Economic Growth of Arab Countries?” Mr. Zreika holds a number of certificates from institutions including the London School of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University. He received his bachelor’s degree in information technology from Western Sydney University.

PIOTR ZYGADLO – Poland

Piotr Zygadlo is Director of the Department for Regional Operational Programmes in Poland’s Ministry of Economic Development. His government career includes positions within the Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Infrastructure and Development, Ministry of Regional Development and the Ministry of Finance. He has published several works that have received high recognition including a second-degree prize for research activity from the President of the Warsaw School of Economics. Dr. Zygadlo is a graduate of the State Higher Vocational School in Nowy Sącz and the National School of Public Administration. He holds MAs from both Jagiellonian University (European studies) and the Pedagogical University of Cracow (political science), and a PhD in economics from the Warsaw School of Economics.

Institute for the Study of Diplomacy

Founded in 1978, the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, an integral part of the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, brings together diplomats, other practitioners, scholars, and students to explore global challenges and evolving demands of diplomatic statecraft, to better understand the nexus of theory and practice, and to enhance and expand an appreciation of the role of diplomacy as a critical tool in national policy.
