After a relentless winter, and an equally dreary spring, the work of George McConnon is just what the Fat Canary needs as a respite from the cold season. With a storm of bright colors, McConnon’s work is a visual reminder that rebirth and positive energy is right around the corner. Although McConnon states his work does not have a complicated meaning, one could beg to differ as inspiration flows as effortlessly as light across these paintings.

His tactile use of paint creates waves very reminiscent of the dynamic brush strokes of a Van Gogh landscape. One can easily imagine the mistral winds of Starry Night guiding the artist’s fingertips as cerulean and ultramarine mingle luminously with ochres and crimson. There is an organic, earthy, element as well, especially in the greens and blacks found Home (below). The Source could be the ephemeral passage of spiritual wisdom from a multitude of the divine. On the other hand, perhaps, it really is as George McConnon states, that his paintings do not have complicated meanings. Maybe it is a simple as embracing the child within - as Pablo Picasso so aptly put it, “every artist is a child. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” McConnon’s creations prove that in this case - the child has remained, and the master artist George McConnon is alive and well.

ARTIST STATEMENT My paintings do not have complicated meanings; each one is a happily inspired expression of my view of the world. Although abstract, they possess the traditional elements of painting- composition, perspective, color, depth, balance, and subject matter. After a lifetime of being an artist and trying to find the right way to express myself, I found working with my hands gives me the effect I want. Liquid house paint poured directly on the canvas begins my process and once I start, I’m committed to finishing the work before the paint dries.

Thank You Sylvia, acrylic on canvas, 32” x 48” I explore painting. I embrace change and growth in my work. The paintings I do today will not be like the paintings I do tomorrow. I find freedom in letting the work evolve. The paintings may not take a long time to create. But the inspiration can take days, weeks, or months to arise. A beautiful tree blossoming in the spring, a foggy morning in the valley, shining Christmas lights on a cold winter night inspire me.

The action painting technique dominates the physical characteristics of each painting, but the composition and overall resulting images are impressionistic in their focus on the human perspective and emphasis on vibrant colors and muted details.

Mostly Red, acrylic on canvas, 23” x 33” I hope people who view my work feel happy, inspired, and maybe see the world in a different way.
