He started his career with DuPont as a process engineer at the Victoria, Texas Petrochemicals Plant and at the New Johnsonville, Tennessee Pigments Plant. George was a process development engineer for Occidental Oil Shale where he designed and operated ancillary facilities for modified in-situ oil shale retorting. He was a process engineering supervisor at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant in Beulah, North Dakota from 1982 to 2001 during plant construction, startup, and the first five years of commercial operation. The Great Plains Synfuels Plant gasifies lignite to produce SNG and ammonia. Since 2001, George has been employed by Black & Veatch in the Gas, Oil, and Chemicals Business Line. George Gruber is currently Vice President and Technology Manager for Gasification, Syngas, Synfuels, and Chemicals at Black & Veatch. George leads Black & Veatch development of projects to produce ammonia, urea, methanol, diesel, SNG and electricity from syngas produced by coal and coke gasification and by reforming natural gas. • Gasification can produce high value, clean energy products from low quality Indonesian coal.

• Removal of Indonesia subsidies for oil and electricity (forced by decreased oil and gas production) will increase the need for producing internationally competitive alternative energy in Indonesia. Coal gasification to electricity, clean fuels, and high value chemicals has the potential to mitigate this problem and invest in Indonesia.

• Black & Veatch can assist PLN evaluate options for gasifying coal to produce electricity.
