Did you know Sleep Apnea affects 25 million adults across the US? This means that 25 million adults stop breathing in their sleep nightly for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute at a time. That’s a scary thought.

Not only is it dangerous, these disturbances can prevent you from getting a well-deserved night’s rest. If you’ve ever been told you snore, gasp for air, make choking sounds in your sleep or even just feel like you haven’t been getting a decent night’s rest lately, you should be tested for OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Think Nutrient-Rich Rather Than “Good” or “Bad” Foods

Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated — simply start by shifting toward healthier foods and beverages.

Emphasize whole foods like fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Include beans, nuts, dairy, fish and lean meats.

Minimize processed or boxed foods, which may include more saturated fats, trans fats, salt and added sugars.

Focus on Variety: Eat a variety of foods from all the food groups to get the nutrients your body needs. Eat a rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables. Try fresh and frozen.

Vary your protein choices with more fish, beans, soy and dairy. Did you know, one cup of black beans has 15 grams of protein?

Also eat at least 3 ounces of whole-grain bread, rice, pasta and cereal every day.

Read the ingredient list. When you start looking at what’s in your food, you may naturally start buying things that are better for you and with less ingredients.

Then shift toward buying foods without ingredient labels — bulk oatmeal, almonds, cranberries — single food items that you can combine yourself at home. Even if you’re not much of a cook, you can prepare simple foods at home, like sandwiches, salads, pasta, and smoothies.

When you prepare food yourself, you have so much more control over what you’re eating.

Did you know the super vitamin B12 is a multitasker? It helps regulate how you feel, how well you think, and even your appetite.

Vitamin B12 is known to help the brain produce chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine, which regulate mood and anxiety.

When people don’t have enough B12 they experience symptoms such as fatigue, mouth or tongue soreness, constipation and a loss of appetite. They may be confused, have poor memory or feel depressed.

Although certain cereals and breads are often fortified with B12, animal proteins are really the only natural sources. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends 2.4 mcg of B12 daily from three ounces of beef or three cups of milk. Foods rich in B12 include liver, meat, eggs, poultry, shellfish, milk and milk products such as cheese and yogurt.
