Despite on-going national press about education funding, we are working hard to preserve what we believe is so important for our students; the highest quality teachers, and breadth and depth of opportunity needed to fulfil our students unique potential. Over 2,000 headteachers across the country have recently contributed to a national survey, run by the WorthLess campaign, about the state of funding in their schools. 74% of secondary schools have reduced the number of subjects they are teaching at KS4 and KS5. This is not the case at George Abbot School and we are grateful to all of the parents who have contributed to the PTA and other fundraising initiatives, such as the Opportunities Fund, to help ensure we do not get to this point. Over the half term week, work is continuing on site to position our Portakabin, which will house a newly equipped Photography classroom and facilities, as well as provide some learning support teaching spaces. I would like to mention the enormous commitment of Mrs Ferguson, Miss Masson and Mrs Ashby in working so hard to support our Photography students in these challenging circumstances. I must also mention our Learning Support Team, led by Mrs Ellis, and thank them for being so flexible in continuing to support our students. Thank you, too, to our students for being patient and in coping so admirably in the face of this considerable change. I hope the Portakabin accommodation and progress of the C-Block clear up will make a significantly positive difference in the next half term. Attached are three really useful resources to discuss with your children over half term. The first is our Online Safety Bulletin; the second, our first Careers Newsletter; the third, is the PE Department’s updated extra-curricular timetable. Our call to our students is: 1. Be in the fresh air without a mobile phone in your hand this half term. 2. Think positively about your pathway ahead – having an aim makes hard work meaningful. 3. Join at least one after school club next half term. Participation is part of belonging to our George Abbot Community. To close, a mention of this week’s visit from Stephen Kelly – an ex CEO of three successful UK and USA public tech companies and ex COO to the UK Government. He has made contact with us through our Alumni and parent links. In the second half of this year, he will be speaking to our students about success, focus and ambition, and working with our staff on leadership and social purpose. He is an inspirational man. With best wishes for a restful and perhaps, even sunny, half term. Mrs Kate Carriett Headteacher

Focus on: Extra Curricular Shining the spotlight on a different area of the school each week… SATRO Event George Abbot was pleased to host a SATRO event earlier this week. Three teams of students from Year 9 (see photo at beginning) 10 and 12 took part in the problem solving competition which is one of five heats held across the country. SATRO provides a challenging and diverse programmes particularly focussed on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Students were competing against 11 other schools in this heat to build a tower with a light on the top which would only light up once a weight suspended from it was dropped. This all had to be done with a limited quantity of materials. Our Year 12 team won their heat and the Year 10 team came second so they will both go through to the finals!

Sports Round Up Sharing the sporting success of our students

Sport Round Up Another fantastic week of sport has taken place this week with many teams dominating the leagues. Our U15 boys won the Surrey indoor cricket tournament which is 3/3 for George Abbot so far in these events. Our Year 7 and 8 boys football has started strong with two wins this week and our girls basketball teams continue to dominate across all year groups. Some individual students have also made great strides this week and had personal achievement worth celebrating. Millie Kirby in Y12 has been selected for the U21 England Rounders team and Rhianwen Deacy (Year9) and Megan Davies (Year 10) have both been selected to play for the U15s Surrey Rugby Squad. Finlay Winter has been selected to play Handball for England and Matt Durbridge will now be playing for Harlequins U15s Rugby Squad. We have so many talented students at George Abbot and there are so many to mention but well done and huge congratulations to these students for their commitment to sport. Notices A new extra curricular timetable will be up on the website for next half term. There are quite a few changes as football, rugby and netball season come back. Please can I also remind parents and students that all teamsheets can be accessed via the sport section of our school website.

George Abbot PTA Clandon Park Run 2019 – Saturday 23 March 2019 at 10am

With only five weeks to go to this year’s Clandon Park Run, preparations are heating up. This year, all funds raised will go towards upgrading the arts facilities at school – from ceramics, to fashion, fine art, photography and textiles. Our target is to raise £16,000 from the run and here’s how you can help:

Clandon Park Run T-Shirts: Why not buy a technical t-shirt to remember the run? Orders need to be received by 20 February.

Runners spotted wearing the t-shirt will earn double house points!!

All profits from t-shirt sales will go directly to school.

Race Marshals: We urgently need people to act as marshals around the course. You will be needed for around two hours. No experience is necessary and a full briefing will be given.

Volunteers: We need help around school to welcome runners, to register and to help serve drinks and cakes.

Donations: If you are unable to give your time, would you be able to make a donation to help cover the costs? For example, the wood for the medals costs £100, we need to buy tea and coffee for the café, we have to pay for the race director, prizes etc. Donations can be made by following this link and sponsoring one of the race coordinators, former PTA Chair, Dave Clarke: https://charity.kellystorage.co.uk/Events/2019/Clandon-Park-Run/sponsor/DavidClarke3

Do the Clandon! Why not give some of your time and your money by running the Clandon Park Run? Last year the race took place when the Beast from the East paid us a very unwelcome visit. It was blowing a gale, the snow was coming in horizontally, it was freezing cold and the ground was soaking. But if you did it, you finished with a smile on your face. You can enter at: https://charity.kellystorage.co.uk/Events/2019/Clandon-Park-Run

Please get in touch if you can help in any way: [email protected] – thank you!
