INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

GEOLOGY, TECTONICS AND MINERAGENY OF CENTRAL ASIA

St. Petersburg, VSEGEI, June 6-8, 2011

FIRST CIRCULAR

ORGANIZERS:

Federal Agency on Mineral Resources (Rosnedra), A.P. Karpinsky All Russian Research Geological Institute (VSEGEI),

Chinese Geological Survey, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), Geology and Mineral Management Committee of the Ministry of Industry and

New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Korean Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), Geological Department of Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia (MRAM), Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

PURPOSE AND GOALS OF THE CONFERENCE: In 2002, by the decision of geological surveys of five countries (Russia,

China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and the Republic of Korea), works under the international project “Atlas of Geological Maps of Central Asia and Adjacent Areas at scale 1:2 500 000» were started. This project has been successfully developed since May 2004.

The first stage of the international collaboration finished in August 2008 with a joint representation of four published digital 1:2.5 M scale maps of the Atlas - geological, tectonic, metallogenic, and energy resources at the 33rd Session of the International Geological Congress in Oslo (Norway) (Fig. 1). Each map is compiled in a unified legend. Two of them – geological and energy resources were prepared by the Chinese party, whereas tectonic and metallogenic maps, by Russian experts.

The second stage of the project, which started in 2009, was called “3D Modeling of Deep Structure and Metallogeny of Central and East Asia”. Research tasks caused expansion of the studied territory to the northeast for a better coverage of ore-bearing Meso-Cenozoic volcano-plutonic belts of the Pacific active margin of the Asian Continent (Fig. 2). Main transboundary metallogenic zones and ore-bearing complexes of North and East Asia will for the first time obtain an overall geological-geophysical characteristic in the framework of this project. This problem is supposed to be resolved by 3D modeling of deep lithosphere structure in combination with isotopic geochemical study of seismically “transparent” zones. These zones, as one knows, control the distribution of major metallogenic taxons and large deposits of ferrous, non-ferrous, and noble metals.

Thus, in the course of works under the Central Asian project, we succeeded in acquisition and generalization of new geological and mineragenic materials for a considerable part of the Asian Continent approximately 20 M sq. km in area.

Further project development assumes transition from data acquisition and small-scale mapping to the analysis of digital cartographic material and databases for revealing of spatial-time regularities of formation, transformation, and destruction of continental crust accompanied by development of corresponding types of mineral deposits. Such works will be based on thematic layers of compiled digital maps, complemented and edited by corresponding experts. We are planning to attract a wider spectrum of experts both from Russia (RAS institutes, Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, local geological prospecting institutions etc.) and from abroad.

Purpose of the conference: Acquaint the geological community with main results of works under the Central Asian international project for attraction of as much as possible project participants at future development stages, as well as for further widening of international cooperation between Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and the Republic of Korea.

Discuss topical problems and state of knowledge on geology, tectonics, lithosphere deep structure, and minerageny of the Central Asian mobile belt for the purpose of reliability increase of raw material potential estimation for solid minerals and hydrocarbon material.

The following topics are expected for discussion at the conference: 1. Geology, tectonics, and deep structure of the Central Asian mobile belt. 2. Metallogeny, assessment of metallic and non-metallic minerals, and state of the raw material base in Central Asia. 3. Fuel-and-energy resources and state of the raw material base in Central Asia for hydrocarbon material.
